People who own tablet computers spend more time and money on the internet than anyone else in Britain. This is according to research commissioned by Total Media into how tablet technology has, and will, affect the population in terms of media consumption and behaviour. The quantitative study of more than 1,000 nationally representative respondents identified that 79% of tablet owners mostly use the device at home, with a further 33% saying that the tablet has affected their behaviour in the home.

• Globally, nearly all smartphones and tablets are corporate-liable devices, including most BYOD smartphones. Their purchase price or monthly voice/data services fees of $42 per user on average are paid for, in part or in full, by employers.<br />
• Organisations report plans to buy more Android than iOS corporate tablets in the next 12 months, a warning shot over the bow of iPad current business tablet dominance.<br />
• Microsoft Windows mobile devices barely show on the radar for corporate support and purchase plans. Microsoft and its partners must start addressing businesses and mobile worker needs.<br />
The average replacement cycle for business smartphones has shortened considerably to 1.1 years. RIM, whose smartphones still enjoy solid corporate support, must battle to retain customers who revisit smartphone decisions every year.

WoA (Windows on ARM) tablet PCs, based on estimated general BOM costs of US$300-350 for 10-inch tablet PCs and US$150-200 for 7-inch models, are struggling to meet vendors' price targets for competition against Apple and Amazon's tablet PC products because of the additional US$90-100 fee for Windows 8, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.<p>
The average price of tablet PCs has been dropping rapidly sine the launch of Amazon's Kindle Fire. But PC brand vendors, who are used to price wars, are nevertheless struggling to compete, because unlike Amazon they do not see additional revenues from post-purchase content sales.
While Digitimes has a shaky reputation, the post-purchase point is an important one.

Laptops are doomed. In the next five years, tablets will displace notebook-style computers to become the dominant personal computing platform. And the transition from laptop to tablet has already begun.</p>
That’s the key finding of a new Forrester Research report that predicts the end of the laptop’s 15-year reign. The trend is already well under way among people born between 1980 and 2000, known to demographers as the millennial generation. In the U.S., 30% of tablet owners in this age group have purchased a tablet in place of a PC, compared to 20% of baby boomers.</p>
"For this growing body of [millennial] users, PCs will seem like clunky trucks rather than sleek cars, dampening their long-term propensity to buy conventional PCs," says the 19-page report authored by Forrester analyst Frank Gillett.

Samsung Electronics announced today (March 28th) that GALAXY Note, released in October last year, has surpassed 5 million sales in just 5 months.
Thanks to the fast selling GALAXY Note, Samsung Electronics has gained about two thirds of the South Korean mobile phone market share, making Samsung the leading mobile phone provider in Korea in addition to China, France, Spain and others.
Strictly speaking, analysts say that its 5in size means they'll classify it as a tablet. Note too that these are "sales" to the retail channel - what others call "shipments".

The Transformer Prime lives on. And:
android
tablets
As a little kicker on the story, court filings have revealed that the device has produced pre-order numbers that are, shall we say, less than legendary.
It’s not entirely fair, of course, to compare a fragmented and developing ecosystem like Android tablets to the world leader, the iPad. After all, you don’t look at a new local restaurant and say “yeah well, McDonald’s has served billions.” Selling at that volume is by far the exception, not the rule. At the same time, Asus is a big company with lots of ambition in the tablet and mobile computing space, so we can at least hold them to the standard of a large and established company.
So when court filings reveal that pre-orders for this poster child for Android 4 tablets (and it does look great) total a whopping 2,000 units as of a month ago, it’s kind of a letdown. That and 80,000 going to retailers worldwide make the device seem rather minor even in comparison to other Android products like the Nook Color and Kindle Fire.

Google's approach, which is to say that apps should be screen-size-independent and that it's okay to blow up phone apps to tablet size, is simply wrong. Developers need to take different design approaches on a 4-inch screen and on a 10-inch one. There is no shortcut, no way around this.
The result is that you have a lot of apps on Android tablets—Twitter and Facebook are the most prominent—that function but look ugly and take lousy advantage of the real estate. They aren't grainy like iPhone apps blown up to 2x on an iPad, but they're awkward to use and full of blank space.
We see this problem regularly in the PCMag Labs when we try to do Android tablet app stories. It's easy to create a list of 75 great iPad apps. Building a list of great Android tablet apps is harder. On our last attempt, our software team only found 12.

Assuming that Google is firmly planted in reality, what are they actually going to do to meaningfully improve Android’s disappointing tablet sales and lack of much good tablet software?
More importantly, what can Google do?
With the realities of the tablet market (excuse me, “other platforms”), and with the existing Android hardware ecosystem and the software policies that let it get there, I don’t think I have a realistic, practical answer to suggest. I honestly have no idea what Google could meaningfully do about their tablet problems.

So how can a late entrant like Amazon, with little-to-no hardware DNA, waltz in and knock off a consumer electronics juggernaut like Samsung, a company that also enjoyed strong growth in 2011? This is where we believe things get interesting. In short, Amazon’s launch of Kindle Fire had more in common with an Apple-style launch than it did with aligning with the Android system. To date, the Android world has focused on marketing the operating system and the “power” of the devices, with quality of content and the consumer experience subordinated in priority.

Why You Can Ignore CES: The Great Tablet Hype of 2011 >> The Atlantic
january 2012 by guardiantech
Look, it's not that there's a theme to how we're feeling today… Anyhow, here's a breakdown of tablets promised and (sometimes) shipped. Note that the article frequently mixes up "shipped" and "sold". So in terms of sales, it's even fewer. We'd forgotten about the Lenovo one, though. Like Lenovo, it seems.

Tough negotiator: HP wanted $1.2B for webOS and Palm’s assets (exclusive) | VentureBeat
december 2011 by guardiantech
"$1.2bn. That’s how much HP paid for Palm last year, and it’s also how much the company was trying to sell its Palm assets for over the latter half of 2011, VentureBeat has learned.
"As baffling as it may seem, HP was trying to rid itself of Palm without taking a loss on its purchase, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told us. When asked for confirmation about the pricing, an HP representative declined to comment."
Facebook laughed them out of the room.

December 2011: "The tablet wars are getting exciting. First Amazon released an iPad killer, called Kindle Fire. Now Google is coming up with its own.
"Google will 'market a new tablet of the highest quality in the next six months,' according to Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google, in an offhand comment a week ago during an interview with an Italian newspaper, Il Corriere della Sela."

From April 2010: Google in unique position to deliver "iPad Killer" >> PCWorld
december 2011 by guardiantech
From the balmy days of April 2010: "Google is one of a handful of companies capable of delivering a device that can compete with the innovation and user experience of the iPad, while possibly delivering more business functionality akin to what we expect from the HP Slate.
"The New York Times reported on April 12 that 'Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system.'
"This tidbit was accompanied by anonymous sources claiming 'the company had been experimenting in "stealth mode" with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.'"

A 7in tablet is not just a smaller 10.1in tablet >> Technovia
december 2011 by guardiantech
Ian Betteridge: "I’ve recently been using a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, one of the newest generation of Android tablets running Honeycomb (an Ice Cream Sandwich update is in the pipeline. Even though it’s not significantly cheaper than the 10.1in Tab, I got it because of the different form factor: it’s significantly lighter and easier to carry around than the iPad I already use, and makes a nice contrast to the bigger tablets.
"However, it also illustrates the issues with using an interface which is designed for larger screens on a smaller touch screen. Some of the applications which are designed specifically for Honeycomb have controls and buttons which are perfect for touching on a 10.1in screen, but which are just a shade too small to accurately hit on something a couple of inches smaller."
This is why Apple is highly, highly unlikely to produce a 7in iPad.

Media tablet market dips in Q3 but will explode in Q4 >> IDC
december 2011 by guardiantech
"Amazon and Barnes & Noble are shaking up the media tablet market, and their success helps prove that there is an appetite for media tablets beyond Apple's iPad," said Tom Mainelli, research director, IDC Mobile Connected Devices. "That said, I fully expect Apple to have its best-ever quarter in 4Q11, and in 2012 I think we'll see Apple's product begin to gain more traction outside of the consumer market, specifically with enterprise and education markets."
Tablets were equivalent to 18% of the PC market in Q3; expect that to be even bigger in Q4. And Android - driven by the Kindle Fire - will be up to 40%.

Tablets account for nearly 40% of non-computer web traffic in Brazil and Colombia >> Cellular News
december 2011 by guardiantech
"Non-computer devices (including mobile phones, tablets, and other connected devices) accounted for an average of 2.6% of all web browsing activity across the 10 Latin American markets, according to comScore.
"When looking at non-computer traffic, Brazil had the highest percentage of web traffic coming from tablets at 39.9%, while Chile had the highest percentage of web traffic coming from mobile phones at 78.8%."
A couple of percent might sound tiny, but that's in a market not previously thought of as well-penetrated by smartphones or tablets. Latin America is one of the few growth areas for PC sales; if tablets and smartphones start getting ahead there, things could change quickly for PC makers.

Estimating Kindle Sales - David Smith
december 2011 by guardiantech
"I thought of two other proxies for sales that might help us get closer to a real number.
"I looked at the number of customer reviews made for each of the various Kindles since December 1. Assuming that customers of each product are equally likely to write a review this should give a reasonable estimation for relative sales volumes.
I did a search on TwitPic for “New Kindle” and went through the recent pictures tallying up the relative counts of the various models. My assumption here is that people would share pictures of their new devices with roughly equal measure. Since the devices are physically so different, it was easy to distinguish their purchases."
Or might that overestimate Kindle Fire sales, since you'd be more likely to tweet or review a brand new piece of just-released kit than something that has been around for a while?

Pricing could be a problem for Windows 8 tablet >> ZDNet
december 2011 by guardiantech
"The largest group of voters, 38% of he total, said that they would only be willing to pay between $200 and $399 for a Windows 8 tablet, while another 27% would be willing to go up as high as $599."
It's a small sample, but the results reflect what is seen in the market: people don't like spending more than $400 for a tablet, except for particular brands. Well, one particular brand.
However, it will be very hard for OEMs which will also have to pay the Windows licence price for a Windows tablet to drive their prices below that of Apple.

Since the launch of OneNote for iPhone nearly a year ago, a recurring request from our customers has been for a version that can be used more easily on the iPad's larger screen. We're happy to announce that today's new release of OneNote for iOS devices includes a version that's tailored for the iPad."

" I think it’s possible to use an iPad as one’s primary device for professional-level content creation. Actually, scratch that. I’m positive it’s possible – because I’ve been doing it for the past three months, and I’ve been having a really good time.
"This hasn’t been one of those experiments-for-the-sake-of-experimentation in which someone temporarily forsakes a PC for another device in order to write about the experience. No, I’ve been using the iPad for my daily activities–running Technologizer, writing for TIME, CNET, and AllBusiness.com, and more – because I find it to be the preferable tool in multiple respects. I’ve been using it about 80 percent of the time, and using my MacBook Air about 20 percent of the time. I have no desire to go back."
That's using ZaggFolio, which is a really good keyboard for the iPad. Otherwise it would just be "reading and light productivity". See the pic with the article.

Apple’s figures are tablets sold, which don’t include tablets sitting on store shelves, tablets en route to stores or tablets sitting in a warehouse. By comparison, Android’s figures are the shipped number of tablets, so any devices sitting on a store shelf actually count, and they shouldn’t for market share purposes."

Android Tablets Gained on IPad in Third Quarter >>§ Bloomberg
october 2011 by guardiantech
Read carefully: "Sales of tablet computers running Google’s Android software rose last quarter at the expense of Apple’s iPad, after companies led by Samsung Electronics Co. introduced new models, according to a researcher.
"Android-powered tablet computers accounted for 27% of global sales during the three-month period, jumping from 2.3% a year earlier, Strategy Analytics said in a statement today. The iPad’s share fell to 67% from 96%."
So sales of iPads fell? No, they grew. The market grew by 3.79 times in size from 4.4m to 16.7m, according to Strategy Analytics. In which case iPad sales "fell" from 4.2m to 11.2m - up 2.6 times. Android tablets grew from 100,000 to 5.5m.
Basically, companies started selling Android tablets. The story is that the tablet market exploded, and Android tablets are now a part of it. But "at the expense" of Apple? 126% growth?

Google and its manufacturer partners are yet to announce official sales figures for tablets running Android, leaving us dependent on supply chain rumors and guesstimates. Android developer Al Sutton reminded us, though, that with a little math we could get an estimate of quite how many Honeycomb slates are in the wild. The number? Roughly 3.4m."

"It was a theme picked up by at least eight other news outlets, including VentureBeat ("Tablet sales slow"), The Loop ("'media tablet' market isn't as strong as previously thought") and Forbes ("Sales Dip Hints Media Tablets Won't Replace PCs Any Time Soon").<br />
<br />
"The source for all these pessimist headlines? An IDC report that the total number of tablet computers shipped into sales channels in Q1 2011 was 7.2 million.<br />
"At first that struck me as absurd, given that Apple (AAPL) alone is expected to report next week that it sold a good deal more than 7.2 million iPads last quarter.<br />
"Then I took a second look at IDC's report. What I missed the first time -- and what these reporters failed to take into account -- is that IDC was talking about Q1 2011, which runs from January to March, not Q2 2011, which ran from April to June. Of course tablet sales dipped after the October-to-December holiday quarter. We knew that months ago. This is news?"

Android Tablets Get OS Update >> DisplaySearch Blog
june 2011 by guardiantech
"It’s been evident that the early Android-based tablets aren’t selling as well as many expected, and some brands we spoke to indicated that the late arrival of the OS could be a good thing. One brand said its engineers saw a significant difference between 3.0.1 and 3.1, so instead of coming out earlier in the year, the brand decided to wait until 3.1 was ready to release a device. Dell recently went as far as to say it would only come out with its 10.1” tablet in China because executives felt that the position of Android in the US was still unclear and that the platform was still immature...<br />
<br />
"The apps run more reliably and consistently, and the platform hasn’t crashed yet. There are still some issues with running Adobe Flash, and the update process wasn’t as seamless as it could have been. Based on some forum postings, other users had similarly uncertain update experiences."

Council spends £10,000 on iPads despite cuts >> ITN YouTube channel
june 2011 by guardiantech
If you can't be bothered to click, it's Havering council. Pick your answer: this is (a) farsighted (b) stupid because <br />
<br />
(a) they spent the money on iPads <br />
(b) they didn't spend it on laptops <br />
(c) they didn't spent it on Android tablets<br />
<br />
Yeah, yeah, go fight it out in the comments. Cosmo never has this much fun with its multiple choice quizzes.

Whitebox Tablet PC Market, Here to Stay? >> DisplaySearch Blog
june 2011 by guardiantech
"Apparently panels deemed A-minus or lower are being rejected by top brands, but they are being picked up by local Chinese players. A quick search of 9.7” tablets for mainland China on Alibaba.com reveals over 4,000 products. Further searching suggests that many of those 4,000 models are intended for markets outside China. A search of 9.7” tablets on Chinese version of Alibaba.com shows over 1,500 models in the China market.<br />
"So can we expect whitebox markets to be a recurring influence on the tablet market? The verdict is still out, but what we’re hearing in China is that many of the whitebox players are regretting their foray into the tablet PC market and are considering withdrawing their tablet PC business. While they aggressively moved into the category, sales have been far below their expectations, taking several months to clear out inventory."<br />
<br />
That huge number of white-label tablets pushing Apple to 54% (also a DisplaySearch stat) may have just been a blip.

Dear Ubuntu: The netbook is toast >> The Register
june 2011 by guardiantech
The former chief operating officer of Canonical (Ubuntu) argues that netbooks are sooo over. The commenters disagree: some of them know someone who bought a netbook, ooh, a while back, and their tablet doesn't have a proper file system browser, so QED.

Tall and Narrow >> Tim Bray's Ongoing
may 2011 by guardiantech
"Here’s the tablet conundrum: I find that full-size (i.e. iPad or Xoom scale) devices often sit most comfortably in the hand when held sideways. And, during a recent presentation I attended on app design for the tablet form factor, someone pointed out that a landscape-mode tablet, unlike a portrait-mode handset, recalls the shape of computer monitor; so presumably the user-experience lessons we’ve learned designing for monitors begin once again to apply."<br />
<br />
Tim Bray, in case you didn't know, is a key developer at Google working on Android Market. So how do you hold your tablet? In portrait, or landscape mode?

BlackBerry PlayBook sales miss targets by over 90% at major retailer, 'much higher' return rate than XOOM >> Boy Genius Report
may 2011 by guardiantech
"According to a trusted source from a major big box retailer, sales of RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook have fallen far short of expectations. In addition, we’re told that the PlayBook is being returned at a higher pace than the Motorola XOOM. According to our source, PlayBook sales at this particular retailer missed internal sales targets by more than 90%."<br />
<br />
Pinch of salt may be required: other sources suggest comparatively good sales. But sales through retailers probably aren't RIM's intention for the PlayBook.

Nvidia CEO: Why Android tablets aren't selling |>> CNET News
may 2011 by guardiantech
"During an earnings conference call, Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, articulated part of the problem, saying, 'Consumers want more apps for Android tablets.'<br />
That's not the whole story, according to Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, who I chatted with on Thursday...<br />
"''It's a point of sales problem. It's an expertise at retail problem. It's a marketing problem to consumers. It is a price point problem,' he said, for starters.<br />
Though Huang didn't mention the $499 starting price for the iPad, it was clear that this was a reference point. 'The baseline configuration included 3G when it shouldn't have,'he said. 'Tablets should have a Wi-Fi configuration and be more affordable. And those are the ones that were selling more rapidly than the 3G and fully configured ones,' he said.<br />
He didn't stop there. 'And it's a software richness of content problem,' he added, echoing Jha's comments."<br />
3G's there because Android is a phone OS.

BlackBerry PlayBook review >> Pocket-lint
may 2011 by guardiantech
"it took us a couple of days and a helpful hint from the chief designer of the PlayBook to find out that we could turn it on without the use of the power button. All the functions are there from the start, but RIM doesn’t detail them in any of the accompanying literature."<br />
