Can the iPhone 4S replace a "real" digital camera? Ars investigates >> ArsTechnica
november 2011 by guardiantech
Slightly predictable conclusion – that the iPhone 4S benefits from its convenience, but that DSLR lovers won't be trading in their lens any time soon – but worth reading in full to see where this is going.

"Siri, how much data do you gobble up in a month?" Ars investigates >> Ars Technica
november 2011 by guardiantech
Detailed look at Siri and the thorny issue of data caps. "If you own an iPhone 4S and perform all 11 of these same queries every single day for a month over your carrier's 3G connection, you can expect to use roughly 20MB or so in a 30-day month. But it's unlikely that that you'll be asking those same questions, or with the same frequency."

Observations on the iPhone 4S battery life >> Keruff
october 2011 by guardiantech
Sam Radford on the mysteriously shorter battery life of the iPhone 4S, and how to improve it: "one suggestion: a full restore of the iPhone. This meant plugging my phone into iTunes, choosing the ‘Restore’ option, waiting for the operating system to download afresh from Apple, installing that, and then restoring my iPhone from my backup.
"And you know what? It did make a difference… But, to be clear, it was still not on a par with what I was getting with the iPhone 4.
"I kept my eye on Twitter for any other suggestions being shared and one popped up which talked about ‘calibrating’ the battery. This basically means charging the battery to 100% and then letting it completely drain to nothing before charging it again.
"I did this yesterday and this too has definitely led to another noticeable boost in battery life. And whilst my iPhone 4S is probably still not quite as good as the iPhone 4, I do think it is now pretty close."
Is the A5 processor to blame?

Pegatron lands higher-than-expected iPhone 4S orders >> Digitimes
october 2011 by guardiantech
"Pegatron Technology has landed orders for 15m units of the iPhone 4S from Apple with shipments reaching 2-2.5m units in the fourth quarter of 2011, the Chinese-language Commercial Times has cited sources as saying. Earlier reports indicated that the volume of Pegatron's iPhone 4S orders would be only 10m units.
"Pegatron has also strengthened its deployment for metal chassis, aiming to also land orders for the iPad 3 from Apple as well as ultrabook orders from branded notebook vendors, said the paper, adding that Pegatron has already secured ultrabook orders from Asustek Computer and Lenovo."
So basically Apple seems to be upping its iPhone 4S orders by 50%. That's some disappointment.

iPhone 4S hands-on impressions >> This Is My Next
october 2011 by guardiantech
Joshua Topolsky: "...Otherwise, the performance of the phone seemed very snappy compared with the older model, though I wouldn’t say the iPhone 4S appears to be obviously faster if you’re just darting around the homescreen and opening apps. Siri did seem to speedily pull up answers and forms for text messages and the like — but it wasn’t exactly blowing my mind.
"Other iOS 5 improvements were obviously on-board, and they do make the iPhone feel significantly more modern. Particularly, the new notifications are a welcome break from the previous, annoying interstitials which iOS offered. Everything I saw today, however, is the kind of feature which you need to live with to fully appreciate. At least, that was my strong impression."
