The iPad Mini will mean the death of eInk >> Mike Cane’s xBlog

Ignore the "iPad mini" meme (which has been around since roughly the day after the iPad launched), and there's some interesting thinking here on whether eInk devices have a long future or not. Basically, if they can't do more than just display books, then likely not - because most people don't read enough books to need a dedicated reader.

Apple maintains top mobile PC share in Q1’12 on strong iPad shipment growth >> DisplaySearch
7 days ago by guardiantech
Rather weirdly, DisplaySearch lumps together tablets and laptops and netbooks into a "mobile PC" category, which isn't very informative. More informative is the table for tablets, which suggests (even if you take Apple's shipments as 11.2m, as Apple says, rather than the 13.2m given here) that Samsung only managed to ship one-tenth as many. It's looking like the iPod market.

So here’s how things work: Apple does, in fact, display the iPad (and iPhone and iPod Touch) as 100% charged just before a device reaches a completely charged state. At that point, it will continue charging to 100%, then discharge a bit and charge back up to 100%, repeating that process until the device is unplugged.
Doing so allows devices to maintain an optimum charge, Apple VP Michael Tchao told AllThingsD today.

The analysis is, definitely, intriguing, though it's based on what Apple <em>could</em> do rather than why it would <em>want</em> to release a smaller tablet. Has the "iPad mini" moment arrived yet? Two weeks ago, a Samsung executive with inside knowledge of Apple’s affairs repeated the all-but-forgotten 7.85-inch iPad mini rumor, and same-day (re)reports of contracted display manufacturers added considerable volume to the mini mania.
Still, rumors are just rumors, and they aren’t particularly convincing in and of themselves. It doesn’t matter how many sources echo some generic sentiment. What does matter is a rumor’s singular specificity. In this case, it’s that pesky 7.85 inches.
And what makes everything even more convincing is that the leaky sources never sought to explain why that number’s so darned significant!
So, allow me.

You need not fear heat blisters when handling the new iPad. Apple's new tablet is neither a burn risk, nor even particularly hot in the grand scheme of competing devices.
We know because we tested the iPad against five other tablets.
Sure, the new iPad, like all electronics hardware, heats up when pushed to its limits. This is just a matter of physics. Processors, batteries and back-lit displays generate heat under load.
Consumer Reports proved this when it <a href="http://news.consumerreports.org/electronics/2012/03/our-test-finds-new-ipad-hits-116-degrees-while-running-games.html">recorded a temperature of 116 degrees</a> Fahrenheit on the back of the new iPad – this after plugging the tablet into a wall socket and playing a demanding 3-D game, <em>Infinity Blade 2</em>, for 45 minutes. This little stunt spurred a lot of online chatter, but it didn't explain whether the new iPad's heat generation is above and beyond that of other tablets on the market.
So Wired decided to investigate.

I'm incredibly conflicted, because as much as I love the do-anything computer …
I'm not sure that many people in the world truly need a general purpose computer that can do anything and install any kind of software. Simply meeting the core needs of browsing the web and email and maybe a few other basic things covers a lot of people.
I believe the kitchen-sink-itis baked into the general purpose computing foundations of PCs, Macs, and Unix make them fundamentally incompatible with our brave new Post PC world. Updates. Toolbars. Service Packs. Settings. Anti-virus. Filesystems. Control panels. All the stuff you hate when your Mom calls you for tech support? It's deeply embedded into of the culture and design of every single general purpose computer. Doing potentially "anything" comes at a steep cost in complexity.
Very, very small PCs – the kind you could fit in your pocket – are starting to have the same amount of computing grunt as a high end desktop PC of, say, 5 years ago. And that was plenty, even back then, for a relatively inefficient general purpose operating system.

What’s an hour of a great experience worth in megabytes? Who decided that there is an optimum size for a digital magazine? And what is it? 50MB? 200mb? Sitting and waiting for a magazine to download at any size is a hassle, but with Newsstand auto-downloads and progressive downloading (coming soon to Mag+), I think this has largely been mitigated.
My point is that I don’t believe people actually give a flying frog about file size—they care about value. And most content creation companies have not yet even begun to tap what can be done in this space. For instance, why not instead of just delivering Walking Dead as a video file, make it an “issue.” In it, you could have interviews with the actors, slideshows of behind the scenes photos, an interactive game, a live feed of news from the show AND the actual episode itself, playable in full-screen and over AirPlay.

The survey, conducted last month, is yet another confirmation that no company comes close to matching the iPad in the enterprise. Indeed, the iPad wannabes are barely on the radar. While 84% of the companies that plan to buy a tablet in the next quarter said they will go with Apple's iPad, up from 77% in November, just 8% said they will buy one from the No. 2 brand, Samsung, compared to 10% in the previous survey.
But Samsung, a highly diversified company, can better withstand a poor showing in the tablet market than can Hewlett-Packard and Dell. The new iPad shares nearly nothing with the iPad 2 hardware, according to Apple executives I spoke with. Its retina display has 1 million more pixels than a large-screen HDTV. The new A5X chip has, according to Apple, four times the processing power of Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip. Compared with iPad 2, it has a nicer camera, a video camera, dictation input, and 4G, while still squeezing out 10 hours of (Wi-Fi) battery life. It’s a wee bit thicker and an ounce heavier. And yet, in my conversations with numerous reporters over the past few days, the theme they kept bringing up was “incremental innovation”: Will the next iPad be innovative enough to maintain Apple’s momentum?
If the iPhone 4S is a case study, the answer for consumers is a resounding “yes.”

Google's approach, which is to say that apps should be screen-size-independent and that it's okay to blow up phone apps to tablet size, is simply wrong. Developers need to take different design approaches on a 4-inch screen and on a 10-inch one. There is no shortcut, no way around this.
The result is that you have a lot of apps on Android tablets—Twitter and Facebook are the most prominent—that function but look ugly and take lousy advantage of the real estate. They aren't grainy like iPhone apps blown up to 2x on an iPad, but they're awkward to use and full of blank space.
We see this problem regularly in the PCMag Labs when we try to do Android tablet app stories. It's easy to create a list of 75 great iPad apps. Building a list of great Android tablet apps is harder. On our last attempt, our software team only found 12.

So, just how big is the battery? The new iPad clocks in at 42.5 watt-hours, which works out to 11,666 mAh. That is a solid 70% boost to capacity over the iPad 2′s 25 watt-hour, 6,944 mAh battery. The new iPad maintains the established 10-hour lifespan standard, and even if you’re active over LTE rather than Wi-Fi, you’re still getting a very respectable 9 hours of life.
To put that in context, an iPad 2 with with this new battery, if such a device existed, would probably last close to 17 hours on Wi-Fi.
How does this shape up versus other LTE tablets? Well, Samsung claims the LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab 10.1 has 12 hours of continuous usage with a 7000 mAh battery, while AT&T claims just as much with HTC Jetstream and its 7,300 mAh battery. Of course, these are dealing 1280 x 800 screens, which are bound to be way less taxing on lifetime, but it’s still a considerable difference.
Would be interesting to know if Apple has some new battery technology in there. Given the volume/power change, it seems like it must. Perhaps the iFixit teardown (expected any time soon) will explain.

In previous ChangeWave surveys we've found that the percentage of tablet owners who say they are Very Satisfied with a particular device is highly predictive of future demand for that device. So how does the Amazon tablet rating match up against other tablet devices?
While the 54% Very Satisfied rating for the Kindle Fire is considerably below the 74% rating of the industry leading Apple iPad*, it is higher than the 49% average rating for all of the other tablet devices combined.

"While the iPad’s lead in the tablet market is obvious, it’s becoming more clear there’s strong competition for market share below it. The Amazon Kindle Fire represented an average of 2.4 ad impressions on Chitikas network for every 100 iPad impressions, but RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook wasn’t far behind; it viewed an average of 1.8 ad impressions for every 100 iPad impressions on Chitika’s mobile ad network."Wow, that sounds incredible! "Something must have gone horribly horribly wrong over at Deutsche Bank because I just don’t see THAT much of an effect. I don’t know what Chris Whitmore did but there’s just something wrong with his math. Global PC sales were 92 Million in Q3/2011 including 5 million Macs sold by Apple. They also sold 11 Million iPads which brings the total number up to 103 million “PCs”. If you look at the Deutsche Bank numbers HP has a market share of 17% (Gartner gives it as 17.7%). To make them drop off to under 15% as the Deutsche Bank graphs shows Apple would have had to sell over 18 million iPads which they simply didn’t."

A 7in tablet is not just a smaller 10.1in tablet >> Technovia
december 2011 by guardiantech
Ian Betteridge: "I’ve recently been using a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, one of the newest generation of Android tablets running Honeycomb (an Ice Cream Sandwich update is in the pipeline. Even though it’s not significantly cheaper than the 10.1in Tab, I got it because of the different form factor: it’s significantly lighter and easier to carry around than the iPad I already use, and makes a nice contrast to the bigger tablets.
"However, it also illustrates the issues with using an interface which is designed for larger screens on a smaller touch screen. Some of the applications which are designed specifically for Honeycomb have controls and buttons which are perfect for touching on a 10.1in screen, but which are just a shade too small to accurately hit on something a couple of inches smaller."
This is why Apple is highly, highly unlikely to produce a 7in iPad.

Review: a bargain iPad Bluetooth keyboard from a Chinese market >> Gadget Writing
december 2011 by guardiantech
Tim Anderson: "I am pleased with the keyboard, though given the defects in the case and irritations like the tiny power switch it is not really a huge bargain. I find it thought-provoking though. Is iPad + keyboard all I need when on the road, or have I just recreated an inferior netbook? The size and weight is not much different.
"Unlike some, I do still see value in the netbook, which has a better keyboard, a battery life that is nearly as good (at least it was when new), handy features like USB, ethernet and VGA ports, and the ability to run Microsoft Office and other Windows apps."
Note those last two.

"…the main reason laptops need to be put away is to prevent them from becoming high-speed projectiles in the event of an impact or sudden deceleration, and from hampering an evacuation. Today, just in time for the holidays, we’re releasing OneNote 1.3 for iOS. Since the launch of OneNote for iPhone nearly a year ago, a recurring request from our customers has been for a version that can be used more easily on the iPad's larger screen. "This hasn’t been one of those experiments-for-the-sake-of-experimentation in which someone temporarily forsakes a PC for another device in order to write about the experience. No, I’ve been using the iPad for my daily activities–running Technologizer, writing for TIME, CNET, and AllBusiness.com, and more – because I find it to be the preferable tool in multiple respects. I’ve been using it about 80 percent of the time, and using my MacBook Air about 20 percent of the time. I have no desire to go back."

"No-brainer or not, The Daily’s November 29 report stirs up the age-old debate for Microsoft when it comes to all of its software and services. Would it be more profitable and preferable for Microsoft to keep a given product or service a Windows-only offering? iPad only used once a week, say a quarter of owners >> CNET UK

Let's just whooooooaaaa there on the headline: "say a quarter of those polled in sample whose method is unclear." (The survey was allegedly carried out by or for myvouchercodes.co.uk but we can't find a trace of it on the site.) It then says that only 42% of iPad owners use it every day.
Hint: PR surveys like this aren't intended to transmit any news; if they do, it's an accident on a par with Aeschylus being killed by a tortoise dropped by an eagle mistaking his bald head for a rock.
What's far more interesting, though, is reading the comments on the CNet piece and figuring out from them who actually owns an iPad and who doesn't. It's not hard.

From January 2010: Dan Catt (one of the Guardian's developers) writes: "Like it or not, the iPad is going to change, radically, expectations of how we read - that's its key selling point. And even if the Amazon Kindle is easier on the eyes with its "virtual ink", and its battery lasts longer, the fact it's also grey, doesn't play Doodle Jump and, well, just looks a bit rubbish in comparison, will make all the difference in the end."

"In a note to clients issued Thursday, RBC's Mike Abramsky shares the results of a ChangeWave survey of 2,600 early adopter types. Two key findings: 5% of those surveyed said they had pre-ordered or were very likely to buy Amazon's (AMZN) new Kindle Fire, exceeding the 4% who said they were very likely to buy the original iPad in 2010; 26% of those 5% said they would delay or put on hold the purchase of a new iPad."
From the graphic (you need to click the link), 47% were looking at buying other gadgets. Overall, 27% weren't looking to buy any other sort of gadget (eg laptop, netbook, other tablet, etc). Some 'early adopters' they are, then.

Android Tablets Gained on IPad in Third Quarter >>§ Bloomberg
october 2011 by guardiantech
Read carefully: "Sales of tablet computers running Google’s Android software rose last quarter at the expense of Apple’s iPad, after companies led by Samsung Electronics Co. introduced new models, according to a researcher.
"Android-powered tablet computers accounted for 27% of global sales during the three-month period, jumping from 2.3% a year earlier, Strategy Analytics said in a statement today. The iPad’s share fell to 67% from 96%."
So sales of iPads fell? No, they grew. The market grew by 3.79 times in size from 4.4m to 16.7m, according to Strategy Analytics. In which case iPad sales "fell" from 4.2m to 11.2m - up 2.6 times. Android tablets grew from 100,000 to 5.5m.
Basically, companies started selling Android tablets. The story is that the tablet market exploded, and Android tablets are now a part of it. But "at the expense" of Apple? 126% growth?

iPads less desired than Windows tablets, says study >> SlashGear
october 2011 by guardiantech
"According to new study by Boston Consulting Group, there’s a surprising amount of interest in tablets running Microsoft’s Windows operating system, more so than iPads. Sales figures for Windows tablet PCs versus iPads certainly don’t support the survey results, but the interest is perhaps generated from Microsoft’s recent preview of Windows 8, which won’t be hitting the market until next year."
Survey size not detailed, though it does agree with one that appeared earlier this year by Forrester. So Windows 8 could get a good reception on tablets in late 2012.

Cartooning vs. Technology: How Steve Jobs Ruined Comics >> tompappalardo.com
september 2011 by guardiantech
"In many ways, technology—especially consumer-driven technology—has been striving for the same thing as cartoonists for years now. Simpler, smaller, more streamlined. Minimalist. Removing as much of the object as possible, leaving only the key components (in technology’s case, the interface, the screen). Steve Jobs led the way for elegant and simple device design, and it’s a beautiful thing. But a cartoonist might reach a point where representing something in a super-simplified style when the object itself is already super-simplified becomes increasingly difficult. Let’s take a look at a few examples."<br />

"I have a hunch, which would be hard to quantify, that a significant portion of iPad sales are being put to use in small business in some way shape or form."I have talked to restaurant owners using them to take orders and send automatically back the kitchen. I have talked to financial advice firms using them for notes, organization, and to walk clients through data. We have talked to consultancies, legal firms, small boutique shop owners, automobile dealerships, photographers and a host of other types of small businesses and nearly all of them are finding creative ways to integrate the iPad into their business."Interestingly so far in our study over 85% of small business owners we surveyed are either using the iPad in some way or plan to purchase and use one within the next year."Note however that this is after talking to "more than two dozen small businesses". The iPad's Dominance of the Tablet Market >> Daring Fireball
july 2011 by guardiantech
Says Gruber: "I’m not trying to cherry-pick data. I’m simply observing, based on Apple’s sales data and Google’s activation data, that the tablet market doesn’t today look anything like the smartphone market ever did. The iPad didn’t enter the tablet market. It created the tablet market. The iPad’s role in the tablet market much more closely resembles the iPod’s role in the digital music player market a decade ago than it does the iPhone’s role in the 2008 phone market."

Report: Microsoft worldwide tablet operating-system share at 5%, PlayBook 3.3% >> ZDNet
july 2011 by guardiantech
"According to numbers released on June 21 by Boston-based research firm Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 15m units in the second quarter of 2011. Apple maintained first position with 61% share — down substantially from 94% a year earlier. Tablets running Android, meanwhile, zoomed to 30% operating system share from 3% in the year-ago second quarter."<br />
<br />
Note that this is shipments, not sales. As Mary Jo Foley points out, just because it's shipped doesn't mean it's left a retailer's shelves.
