Sufjan Stevens on the Innocence Mission
I'm in awe of big songs, national anthems, rock opera, the Broadway musical.

But what I always come back to, after the din and drum roll, is the small song that makes careful observations about everyday life. This is what makes the music by The Innocence Mission so moving and profound.

I think part of what we’re trying to do with the Books is to break the back of language, to bend it until it snaps and then examine the pieces to see what of it’s essence remains. Poets and songwriters have been in business so long, trying to say things in just the perfect way that they’ve crowded out the front door to meaning which is all tightly locked up by cliches. Essentially we’re looking for the back way around. So it’s really heartening to find a site like freetranslation.com that so egolessly shreds language like it’s making a vat of sauerkraut out of your precious word cabbages.

The Books are essentially the spirit of the age in song.

Biophilia: Bjork Visualizes Music : All Songs Considered Blog : NPR
A great interview with Bjork wherin she discusses the creative process behind the iPad art/vis app that powers the Biophelia project.

What struck me especially is that she values idiosyncrasy itself. I think she sees something uniquely human in the dusty corners of creative endeavors. Indeed, I'm beginning to realize that just as our weaknesses give us character, so also the flaws in a work of art give it humanity.
You can use the tool of Western Civilization and be impulsive and intuitive and emotional -- and that, for me, creates a lot of hope.

Sometimes pointless delightfulness is exactly what the world needs.

Home Is A Fire - Boing Boing
Shepard Fairey and Death Cab for Cutie collaborate on a video. I love this. You expect it to be Shepard's first foray into the art of cinematography. You watch it and see his technique is clever, but pretty basic. Artwork illustrating lyrics. But! You start to realize the placement of the artwork is not haphazard. It's deeply thought through. Each lyric frame makes a statement to it's surroundings, and this isn't cinematography, but a tour of art set to music.
