Noctis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Noctis is a massive space simulator, allowing you to explore a deserted, enormous galaxy. You can travel between planet systems FTL, land on planets, explore the ship and catalog what you find. That's it. No shooting, no competition. Just endless, lonely discovery.
The current version of the game is called Noctis IV. In the release of Noctis IV, Alex included a facility to have planet names and notes sent back to him and then compiled into a central database of information called the GUIDE. People playing the simulator (also called Stardrifters) could then share their findings with others, and a community of explorers soon developed (on the Noctis forums) around that, vying for a wide range of discoveries, such as the planetary system with the most planets or the biggest tree in the Noctis universe. This is currently the only way to interact with other players.
For some time Alex regularly compiled a new GUIDE based on emailed submissions of players of their "Outbox" and allowed the compilation to be downloaded as an "Inbox"; the GUIDE has not been updated for several years since 2005, but since December 2008 the service has been restored again.[2] A more automatic system of "massively single-player" content sharing is used.

"Massively single-player": I like that.

Double Fine chooses Moai | Blog
After raising 3.3 million heads of lettuce on Kickstarter, Doublefine chooses to build their game on an open-source Lua game engine.
The team at Double Fine kindly filmed a video covering the reasons behind their choice of Moai and showing some of the very earliest Double Fine Adventure development prototypes.

Shadowrun Returns (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1613260297/shadowrun-returns) has also chosen Moai.

Nomic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nomic is a game created in 1982 by philosopher Peter Suber in which the rules of the game include mechanisms for the players to change those rules, usually beginning through a system of democratic voting.

I wonder: this may actually be a great way to test how a democratic system works in the long term. It's a like a microcosm version of democratic government, with players exploiting the boundaries of law (for profit?).

The Most Dangerous Gamer - Atlantic Mobile
He’d like to see the game sell well when it’s released, potentially later this year, but his primary concern is that it fit the artistic parameters he has set for it. “I can always go back to being an independent developer,” he shrugged. “Even if I have zero dollars, I’d be able to do what I did in 2005, but better. If I can just save enough for a year or two of low-budget living, that’s all I need.”

An interesting observation about games: games we come back to are loops. They ask us to complete a (possibly repetitive) task, but provide enough freshness to keep us coming back.

Gamasutra - Features - Learning From The Masters: Level Design In The Legend Of Zelda
For each of the dungeons, the critical path is almost always linear. There are very few instances where the player is required to re-traverse ground she's already seen. The only exception to the linearity rule tends to be two or three rooms at the beginning of the dungeons that allow you to choose between a small subset of rooms.

hiive buzz: Accelerating ImpactJS With WebGL
WebGL is hardware-accelerated (runs on the graphics card), whereas 2D canvas is not. Some kind soul wrote a library that layers the 2D canvas API on top of the WebGL context. Result: hardware accelerated 2D.
Even crazier: the Creatures and Castles developer implemented it as a plugin for Impact.

GlitchHiker - IGF video on Vimeo
Another @Vlambeer endeavor:
Players all over the world played to save GlitchHiker from extinction and failed: GlitchHiker is a game that has gone extinct. Every successful attempt at collecting more than a hundred points restored the games’ system resources globally and every failure slowly destroyed it.

As the game system withered, increased amount of glitches appeared in the graphics, music, controls and gameplay. As soon as the game would run out of its resources, it would go extinct and become permanently unplayable, not just for that player or for a limited time – it would go extinct for everyone and forever.
