Flickr Flow / Fernanda Viegas & Martin Wattenberg
“The two of us see the world as a stream of color, and in 2009 we finally had a chance to draw the river in our heads. We began with a collection of photographs of the Boston Common taken from Flickr. Using an algorithm developed for the WIRED Anniversary visualization, our software calculated the relative proportions of different colors seen in photos taken in each month of the year, and plotted them on a wheel. The image below is an early sketch from the piece. Summer is at the top, with time proceeding clockwise.”

My handmade versions of over seventy objects designed by users of the free 3-D modeling program Google SketchUp exist somewhere between the bootleg, the copy, and the translation. Modeled from online designs that seem to lack value or utility, these strange objects explore the handmade in the digital-era of design, uniqueness found even within the copy, and collaboration’s relationship to outsourcing, as well as labor, authorship, and value.

Design and Existential Risk
“As we enter the second dwecade of the 21st Century, we are challenged by unprecedented planetary scale events: resource wars, climate change, emerging diseases- which increase in frequency and pose unprecedented problems for mapping and design. What can the role be for design when the reality that faces us is more extraordinary than the worlds we have imagined in science fiction?

Design and Existential Risk is a series of conversations with leading thinkers, designers, authors and educators, critically questioning how the practice of design can imagine and prepare for extreme existential risks. Each event will explore the ways design thinking engages sustainability and indeed our very survival across near term [5 years], mid term [20 years] through very, very long term [tens of thousands of years and longer] time frames.”

Joshua Davis Creates the Face of Watson, IBM's Jeopardy Supercomputer | Co.Design
If you watched "Jeopardy!" last night, you saw an IBM supercomputer named Watson cream two human champions -- at least until it made a few dumb mistakes late in the round and allowed Brad Rutter to tie things up. But you also saw Watson's "face" -- the swirling electronic avatar that Alex Trebek dryly rebuked when it buzzed in with an incorrect answer that Ken Jennings had already made. (Guess we shouldn't fear a robot uprising quite yet.)
Edge Town
Design proposals for city-limit living.
Ben Hooker and Shona Kitchen, 2004

We think there are ways to design interfaces with
the flows of electronic data that run through our cities
so that they can be experienced as an enriching complement to other, more ‘earthly’ phenomena. Edge Town
is a design-led research project to test this hypothesis;
a proposal of not just how to live, but how to live well
in urban environments which have an ever-increasing
and complex electronic component.
