The Samsung Sensor Simulator is a plug-in for the Eclipse IDE that provides a visual model of a device along with its various sensor settings. By manipulating the position of the device or the forces acting on the device, the user can see the sensor readings under a variety of conditions.
In addition, the simulator allows the user to:
· Run scripts describing changing physical conditions
· Link to an actual device and record the sensor readings from that device in a data file
· Play back recorded data files and user defined scripts

Making modular and reusable code is something we should all be doing to keep the quality of it up to par. A very simple way to make reusable modules of code in node.js is to create generalized modules (no pun intended).
Recently, I created a node module for Domai.nr, and wanted to shed some light on how easy it actually is to make these node modules. In this post, we’re going to recreate the domai.nr module from scratch, and hopefully you learn a few things along the way!

"Pagination 101" by Faruk Ateş — Gist
One of the most commonly overlooked and under-refined elements of a website is its pagination controls. In many cases, these are treated as an afterthought. I rarely come across a website that has decent pagination, and it always makes me wonder why so few manage to get it right. After all, I'd say that pagination is pretty easy to get right. Alas, that doesn't seem the case, so after encouragement from Chris Messina on Flickr I decided to write my Pagination 101, hopefully it'll give you some clues as to what makes good pagination.

I would often joke to my friends that a good movie hasn't come out since Jurassic Park, which is just an indictment against the Hollywood system for not making real movies anymore, having really cornered itself into making franchises. Wasn't Live Free or Die Hard an original script at first? Here's my list, obviously much harder to make that I thought. It's films that are original and most of all, fucking ballsy. Also, a good list for my friends who dont like movies very much. No order.

After compiling a number of bands I picked out forty based on how much I enjoyed their material and what I felt people would enjoy. Needless to say there are plenty of bands that didn't make the cut and I actually ended up omitting a few of my favorite albums to favor some lesser known ones that deserve attention. I tried to give a brief overview of each release so you don't have to blindly check out bands like in my last thread. I also want to make it clear that this list is meant to guide you, not tell you what bands I think are the best. So, here you go, forty extreme metal releases that are worth checking out. O gods of software development and operations, I have sinned.
Your anger falls on me, and I feel your wrath.
The web site I have inherited has no unit tests.
It has no deployment script, and no README.
Or database migration tool.
It makes no use of virtualenv or requirements.txt or buildout,
nor has any description of dependencies.
It has most of the VCS history missing.
Source dependencies are in random folders,
clearly checked out from private SVN clones of
proprietary and open source projects,
but forked at unknown date with no history.
And I cry, “Why me?”
Have I not used a fabfile for projects I have started?
Have I not included a setup.py for my open source apps?
Have I not written helpful docs, or at least a README.rst?
Have I not written correct commit messages, with carefully
constructed patches that didn't mix features and fixes?
Are the projects I hand on not covered by automated tests,
at least for the critical functions?
But then I consider the sins of my youth,
and I confess: You are just.

django-anonymizer released « All Unkept
It is common practice in develpment to use a database that is very similar in content to the real data. It is tempting to download a copy of the production database for smaller apps (or a trimmed version). The problem is that this can lead to having copies of sensitive customer data on development machines and other placers (like automatic backups). This Django app provides an easy and customizable way to anonymize data in your database, while leaving the structure intact and the data looking sensible.

LucidDB - Home
LucidDB is the first and only open-source RDBMS purpose-built entirely for data warehousing and business intelligence. It is based on architectural cornerstones such as column-store, bitmap indexing, hash join/aggregation, and page-level multiversioning. Most database systems (both proprietary and open-source) start life with a focus on transaction processing capabilities, then get analytical capabilities bolted on as an afterthought (if at all). By contrast, every component of LucidDB was designed with the requirements of flexible, high-performance data integration and sophisticated query processing in mind. Moreover, comprehensiveness within the focused scope of its architecture means simplicity for the user: no DBA required.

Nuclear Phynance phorum thread about kdb+, q/k, onetick, vahyu and related
8 days ago
I don't follow the standard language API argument as kdb+ has always had a c, java, c# api and they are very simple as they are just (de)serialization routines. Q is more intuitive to those who have studied functional/vector/set languages such as sql, lisp/scheme, haskell and matlab than more mainstream languages such as c, c# or java. Career friendly - my experience of learning Q was that it made me a better programmer; I've not heard of it hurting anyone's career.
I can speak about kdb+ functionality, performance and architecture.
Functionality - it is a virtual machine (byte code interpreter with super instructions), with built-in data types for vectors, dictionaries (hashtables) and tables. It has a bunch of built-in functions for some very powerful joins, and Q can sometimes look a bit like sql - e.g.
select size wavg price by sym from trade where date=2009.06.30, sym in `MSFT`CSCO, time within 10:00 11:00
There are feedhandlers out of the box but the c api is so simple it is quite straightforward to develop your own. And it hooks in to the common tools like excel and matlab.
Performance - Arthur Whitney has been optimizing the algorithms used in kdb+ for the last 30 years (Morgan Stanley and UBS had him for a few years to work on their trading systems). The executable is a couple of hundred kB, and is blazingly fast.
Architecture - It's a 64bit app and can be run in multithreaded, multiprocess and in a distributed mode on windows, solaris, linux and osx. It scales extremely well, although designs tend to revolve around concepts of in-memory database, on-disk database and gateways.
Last year there was a lot of talk about disk compression in the kdb+ community, but Kx chose to leave compression up to the file system software (e.g. ZFS gives a default compression ratio of about 3.3 for TAQ data) rather than implement a proprietary version themselves. Apparently another vendor had chosen to implement their own proprietary compression algorithm and was found to have slowly corrupted data, discovered some time after deployment.
There's a google group http://groups.google.com/group/personal-kdbplus and you can get a non-commercial version of kdb+ from kx.com. Kx has an internal group for commercial users.

Trading-shim Homepage -- shim-101126.tgz
We're releasing the trading shim TM to the financial markets research community in the hopes that it will be useful, whether as a tool for data acquisition, a vehicle for market research, or a starting point for learning and knowledge exchange.
The trading shim is a command-line and dbms controlled interface to the socket-based API of Interactive Brokers' Trader Workstation, abbreviated as the IB tws socket api, or simply 'tws'. That api has a number of advantages for our purposes, including the freely available Trader Workstation, comprehensive feeds and archives for tick and history data, a paper account ideal for software testing, and low transaction costs.
The shim consults the product database at initial startup, and from then on uses in-memory lookup to translate brief text commands from the downstream to the much longer binary requests of the tws api. It serializes the resulting event stream and copies the text to any of a number of user-selected output channels. The shim command interface provides an alternative to the existing tws gui interfaces, permitting you to use downstream programs, whether gui or not, to drive the tws through its api.
The shim is written in C++, and although developed on Linux, should compile and run on any modern Unix-like platform. It is available and useful now. It's free software; we've released the trading shim in source form under the GNU General Public License in order to reach the widest possible community of users. Commercial licenses and support are also available.

Having just gone through this and spent a significant amount of time asking friends for advice on making the move, I’d like to share the best advice I received and what I learned myself. For reference, most people take months to find a place to live and move in. With the tips below, I found an apartment and moved in within 2 weeks of landing in SF.

I recently used django-fiber for a simple project.
It's a nice CMS, a bit more lightweight than django-cms, with a slightly slicker frontend editing experience, and a bit easier when it comes to sharing content between different pages.
I found however, that it was doing a rather large number of queries to render pages, and some that pulled back lots of data, especially when you were logged in (which enables frontend editing).
So, I set to work and created a query count reduction branch. Below are the results so far, and some lessons.

This idea is to provide an introduction to Test-Driven web development using Django (and Python). Essentially, we run through the same material as the official Django tutorial, but instead of 'just' writing code, we write tests first at each stage - both "functional tests", in which we actually pretend to be a user, and drive a real web browser, as well as "unit tests", which help us to design and piece together the individual working parts of the code.
The tutorial uses the new release of Django (1.4), and covers 95% of what's covered in the official Django tutorial. Suggestions, comments and feedback are gratefully received... What should I do next??

The Verilog® Hardware Description Language: Donald E. Thomas, Philip R. Moorby: 9781402070891: Amazon.com: Books
10 days ago
This text presents the IEEE 1364-2001 standard of the Verilog language. The examples in this edition have been updated to illustrate the features of the language. A cross referenced guide to these features is provided, thus, designers already familiar with Verilog can quickly learn the features. Newcomers to the language can use it as a guide for reading "old" specifications. The book should prove to be a useful resource for engineers and students interested in describing, simulating and synthesizing digital systems. It is also ready for use in university courses, having been used for introductory logic design and simulation through advanced VLSI design courses. An appendix with tutorial help and a work-along style is keyed into the introduction for new students. Material supporting a computer-aided design course on the inner working of simulators is also included. "The Verilog TM Hardware Description Language" includes a CD containing Simucad's Silos TM 2001 Verilog Simulator, examples from the book and lecture slides. The simulator is limited in the size of descriptions it will simulate. A few of the language constructs are not recognized by this version of the simulator.

Well I know they are supposedly super fast.
However, where I get confused is this. You cant program these things in C++ best you can do is C or some other special FPGA language. So can you really expect to implement anything sophisticated on top of FPGAs? I mean do people implement complete trading algorithms on top of these things or just small parts of their strategies?
Also what kind of trading algo could possibly use that kind of speed?
Now since naked access is supposedly going away is that going to be and FPGA killer?

Me and my friends consider designing a low latency (target 10-20 usec from wire to memory) FPGA-based board for high frequency trading that can be directly plugged into a co-located server in the PCI express slot. The product will include the hardware with several network interfaces, firmware with 2-3 feed handlers and order routers (e.g. Nasdaq ITCH/OUCH, Arca Direct/ArcaBook, NYSE Ultra), and API to control the FPGA from a software solution.
If you have experience in high frequency trading your opinion would be highly appreciated.
(1) Do you think such a product is needed?
(2) Would a hedge fund or a brokerage company buy or test this product?
(3) What is a realistic price for this product?

How was manpacks.com started? Any owners of a similar business out there? : startups
11 days ago
Specifically, I'm wondering where they got their inventory from at the beginning.
Did they buy from a local store and just pack/ship it out themselves?
Or did they negotiate with the manufacturers at the start? If this, then how did they convince the manufacturer to work with them when they had zero customers and thus no purchasing power to entice the manufacturers?

Tossing Out IRB for Pry
This week I spent some time learning how to use Pry. For those of you who haven’t tried this wonderful alternative to IRB, spend two hours with it. You’ll never go back. I won’t be hitting on all the features Pry has to offer (because there are plenty), just the ones that immediately jumped out as useful to me. Pry has some of the best documentation and one of the friendliest, most helpful IRC channels out there so if you want more in-depth coverage, go check them out.

In the first part we introduced our Unicorn setup that helps you manage several concurrent requests on one Heroku Dyno. The best optimization though is to remove all unnecessary requests completely.

Lisp and J (was: "Higher Order Perl" book and Lisp) - comp.lang.lisp | Google Groups
14 days ago
you are right. You have to learn the meaning of all the single or two
char commands first, but the language itself is much easier than Perl.
Looks like J has a powerful set of commands. Perhaps it could be
translated to Lisp? Of course, this should be done the Lisp-way, which
means using verbose names:

What's Point-free Programing? (point-free function syntax)
Tacit programming is a programming paradigm in which a function definition does not include information regarding its arguments, using combinators and function composition (but not λ-abstraction) instead of variables. The simplicity behind this idea allows its use on several programming languages, such as J programming language and APL and especially in stack or concatenative languages, such as PostScript, Forth, Joy or Factor. Outside of the APL and J communities, tacit programming is referred to as point-free style[1], or more pithily as pointless programming. This is because of the relation between how definitions are done in pointless topology and how they are done in this style.
