Myths About Learning

Will Rogers once said, “It isn’t what people don’t know that hurts them. It’s what they do know that just ain’t so.” All of us – teachers, parents, and students – retain outdated ideas about learning that are based largely on our previous experiences in school. Modern brain science has helped steer us in the right direction.

PyLighter
PyLighter is a program that simply highlights the lines of Python source files as they are used by running code, in real time and at full speed. PyLighter is a tool for beginning programmers to experiment with the relationship between static code and dynamic program behavior. It's also a useful tool for project demonstrations to help non-programmers understand that programs have this dual static-dynamic nature.

What the best college teachers do - Google Books
What makes a great teacher great? Who are the professors students remember long after graduation? This book, the conclusion of a fifteen-year study of nearly one hundred college teachers in a wide variety of fields and universities, offers valuable answers for all educators.

The short answer is--it's not what teachers do, it's what they understand. Lesson plans and lecture notes matter less than the special way teachers comprehend the subject and value human learning. Whether historians or physicists, in El Paso or St. Paul, the best teachers know their subjects inside and out--but they also know how to engage and challenge students and to provoke impassioned responses. Most of all, they believe two things fervently: that teaching matters and that students can learn.

What is the Future of Teaching?
According to the New York Times Bits blog, a recent study funded by the US Department of Education (PDF) found that on the whole, online learning environments actually led to higher tested performance than face-to-face learning environments. “On average, students in online learning conditions performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction,” concluded the report’s authors in their key findings.
