How Your Cat Is Making You Crazy - Magazine - The Atlantic
Certainly Flegr’s thinking is jarringly unconventional. Starting in the early 1990s, he began to suspect that a single-celled parasite in the protozoan family was subtly manipulating his personality, causing him to behave in strange, often self-destructive ways. And if it was messing with his mind, he reasoned, it was probably doing the same to others.

Computer Science Curricula 2013 (CS2013)
Following a roughly 10 year cycle, the ACM and IEEE Computer Society jointly sponsor the development of a Computing Curricula volume on Computer Science. These volumes have helped to set international curricular guidelines for undergraduate programs in computing. In the summer of 2010, planning for the next volume in the series, Computer Science 2013 (CS2013), began. The charter for this effort is given below.

Scientific Scripting with Python by Drew McCormack in Medicine & Science
Learn how to automate your scientific research with Python. This book teaches you the basics of the popular Python scripting language, before delving deep into all aspects of processing data. Python is a simple, yet powerful, programming language similar to Perl, Tcl, and Ruby. It is heavily used in scientific research, and by companies like Google. This book places a strong emphasis on practical techniques for handling data. Although targeted specifically at scientists and engineers, anyone who needs to automate their work flow would find it useful.

Symphony of Science
The Symphony of Science is a musical project of John D Boswell, designed to deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form. The project owes its existence in large measure to the classic PBS Series Cosmos, by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steve Soter, as well as all the other featured figures and visuals. Continuation of the videos relies on generous support from fans and followers

The Radioactive Orchestra: Music From the Sound of Radiation - FoxNews.com
a nuclear safety team in Sweden teamed with composer Axel Boman and musician Kristofer Hagbard to create the Radioactive Orchestra, an ambitious project based on the actual movements of radioactive isotopes -- -- variants of an element with slightly different atomic weights.

The orchestra consists of a Web interface where you can create your own melodies that use isotopic frequencies -- and visualize how radioactive energy moves.

Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?
"The Simulation Argument is perhaps the first interesting argument for the existence of a Creator in 2000 years."

ABSTRACT. This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation.

Histograms in Python
There are a number of important types of plots that are used in descriptive statistics. A common plot that is frequently used in newspapers and magazines is the histogram, a sequence of vertical bars, where the height of each bar represents a count of the data values falling in a "bin." The "count", "bins", and "bars" will be explained in the images that follow.

Science - Creative Commons
The more we understand about science and its complexities, the more important it is for scientific data to be shared openly. It’s not useful to have ten different labs doing the same research and not sharing their results; likewise, we’re much more likely to be able to pinpoint diseases if we have genomic data from a large pool of individuals. Since 2004, we’ve been focusing our efforts to expand the use of Creative Commons licenses to scientific and technical research

Optical Illusions and Visual Phenomena
These pages demonstrate visual phenomena, and »optical« or »visual illusions«. The latter is more appropriate, because most effects have their basis in the visual pathway, not in the optics of the eye. When I find the time I will expand the explanations, to the degree that these phenomena are really understood; any nice and thoughtful comment welcome.

The International annual conference of Bridges: Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science was created in 1998 and is conducted annually. During the conference, practicing mathematicians, scientists, artists, educators, musicians, writers, computer scientists, sculptures, dancers, weavers, and model builders have come together in a lively and highly charged atmosphere of mutual exchange and encouragement.

Hacked Emails Show Climate Science Ridden with Rancor - WSJ.com
The picture that emerges of prominent climate-change scientists from the more than 3,000 documents and emails accessed by hackers and put on the Internet this week is one of professional backbiting and questionable scientific practices. It could undermine the idea that the science of man-made global warming is entirely settled just weeks before a crucial climate-change summit.
