The Ambisonic Toolkit | HomePage
The Ambisonic Toolkit (ATK) brings together a number of classic and novel tools for the artist working with Ambisonic surround sound. The toolset in intended to be both ergonomic and comprehensive, framed so that the user is enabled to ‘think Ambisonic’. By this, the ATK addresses the holistic problem of creatively controlling a complete soundfield, facilitating spatial composition beyond simple placement of sounds in a sound-scene. The artist is empowered to address the impression and imaging of a soundfield—taking advantage of the native soundfield-kernel paradigm the Ambisonic technique presents.

ixi audio on Vimeo
ixi audio is an experimental project concerned with the creation of digital musical instruments and environments for generative music. We are interested in the computer as a workshop for building non-conventional tools for musicians, i.e. not trying to imitate or copy the tools that we know from the world of acoustic instruments or studio technology. We currently work with open source software such as SuperCollider, ChucK and Pure Data, but our aim is to distribute our applications packaged in a way that allows everybody to use them. Simplicity and ease of use together with depth in interaction and expressive scope is the aim of our experimental music software.

The ixi lang live coding environment is a simple visual system presenting a high entry-level control over synth definitions and samples in SuperCollider. The core idea is to represent events in a spatial layout, thus merging musical code and musical scores. The score is active, i.e., if a method is performed upon the score, it changes in real time.

Rethinking the SuperCollider Client ... (pdf)
We present ScalaCollider, a new client framework to connect to the SuperCollider sound synthesis server. It builds on top of the general purpose language Scala. Scala's ambition is to allow for the development of scalable systems, being equally comfortable both for small-scale scripting and large-scale modular projects

J - High-Performance development platform
J is a modern, high-level, general-purpose, high-performance programming language. J is portable and runs on Windows, Unix, Mac, and PocketPC handhelds, both as a GUI and in a console. True 64-bit J systems are available for XP64 or Linux64, on AMD64 or Intel EM64T platforms. J systems can be installed and distributed for free.

Why J?

J is particularly strong in the mathematical, statistical, and logical analysis of data. It is a powerful tool in building new and better solutions to old problems and even better at finding solutions where the problem is not already well understood.

How to Program in SuperCollider: Conductors: a fast GUI
A very rarely updated guide to Supercollider programming.

Conductors: a fast GUI
I usually use Conductors because they're quick and dirty and can very easily be used to control a synth or a pbind. This class is from Ron Kuivila and it's included in the Wesleyan build or else available as quark. (See the Quarks helpfile for more on how to get it.)

Kymatica | Software / AlgoScore
AlgoScore is a graphical environment for algorithmic composition, where music is constructed directly in an interactive graphical score. The result is output as audio (through CSound), arbitrary control data (through JACK ports) for control of other applications, MIDI through JACK or to file, or OpenSoundControl messages. The generated audio can be played back through JACK or exported to an audiofile.

Overtone
an open source audio environment being created to explore musical ideas from synthesis and sampling to instrument building, live-coding and collaborative jamming. We use the SuperCollider synth server as the audio engine, with Clojure (and Java) being used to develop the APIs and the application. Synthesizers, effects, analyzers and musical generators can be programmed in Clojure or designed in a visual data flow editor similar to PureData or Max/MSP. The environment will be integrated with a peer-to-peer network that allows for collaborative composition and jam sessions over the internet and sharing of instruments and effects.

Ivica Ico Bukvic -- Composer, Intermedia Sculptor, Interactive Media Technologist
I like to think of myself as a composer, intermedia sculptor, researcher, and performer. My creations draw upon synergies among aural and visual, acoustic and electronic, interactive works and installations, while my research focuses on scientific exploration of pragmatic and artistic potential of new multimedia technologies in a pursuit of the overall betterment of quality of life. If I had to name one thing that ties all of my ostensibly eclectic creations and research vectors together, it would have to be the ubiquitous interactivity.

Third Bachelor Project: A Tangible Programming Platform for Live Coding
SuperCollider is an open source environment for real-time audio synthesis and algorithmic music composition (i.e. live coding). It consists of a server that generates high-quality sound that can be controlled either through third-party clients (over the OpenSound Control protocol) or by means of interactive programs written in the SupperCollider programming language. The latter is a surprisingly elegant object-oriented language that borrows features from functional programming to enable the algorithmic composition of music (see the tutorials below). The client/server architecture of SuperCollider also allows controlling the server in more widespread programming languages such as Scheme, Haskell, Python, Smalltalk and Java.

During live performances, however, it is arguably more convenient to interact with an interface that allows a "musical program" to be assembled from higher-level "musical building blocks". To this end, some of the expressive power of a full-fledged programming language can be sacrificed. Moreover, the interaction of the artist with the interface can be used to improve the experience of the audience. For instance, by using an attractive tangible user interface realized by Percussa's AudioCubes:
