James William Sobaskie - Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts (review) - Computer Music Journal 25:1
7 weeks ago by gdw
Anyone curious enough to crack the cover of Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts certainly will find an intriguing premise stated at the outset: "Sound saturates the arts of this century . . . None of the arts is entirely mute, many are unusually soundful despite their apparent silence, and the traditionally auditive arts grow to sound quite different when included in an array of auditive practices" (p. 2). Surely this seems reasonable--it actually is quite easy to imagine how other arts might be able to point toward new ways of thinking about sound. But which arts, which practices, and to what end?

Literary Magazine, Writers, Plimpton, Artists - Paris Review
january 2012 by gdw
Founded in Paris by Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen, and George Plimpton in 1953, The Paris Review began with a simple editorial mission: “Dear reader,” William Styron wrote in a letter in the inaugural issue, “The Paris Review hopes to emphasize creative work—fiction and poetry—not to the exclusion of criticism, but with the aim in mind of merely removing criticism from the dominating place it holds in most literary magazines and putting it pretty much where it belongs, i.e., somewhere near the back of the book. I think The Paris Review should welcome these people into its pages: the good writers and good poets, the non-drumbeaters and non-axe-grinders. So long as they're good.”

Algorithmic Music Composition With Linux - athenaCL | Linux Journal
january 2012 by gdw
Aug 16, 2010 By Dave Phillips
My experience with athenaCL has been a little different from my explorations of CM/Grace and CsoundAC. The system is organized in a unique manner that I found confusing at first. However, my initial confusion quickly gave way to amazement, and I must confess that I've become a devoted user.
The use of Python in CsoundAC, Steven Yi's blue, and Oeyvind Brandtsegg's ImproSculpt indicates that Python has a special affinity to the task of music composition by algorithm. Indeed, the language is extensible, relatively easy to learn, and performs decently on modern hardware. However, rendering audio in realtime is not one of Python's strengths, so in athenaCL the task gets handed off to a designated audio rendering subsystem such as Csound.

Calibre: The eBook Reader’s Best Friend, Part 1 of 2 | Dear Author
december 2011 by gdw
Calibre is a software program that is developed by a devoted reader and brilliant programmer, kovidgoyal. The program is free and open source, available for MAC, Windows PC, and Linux users. This week I’m going to address Calibre as the eBook management tool, a program I think is a must for every ebook reader regardless of what device she uses (except maybe the Kindle). The Part 2 of this article will address Calibre as a format conversion tool

Book Review: Head First HTML5 Programming - Slashdot
december 2011 by gdw
This book is definitely an introductory tutorial, and by no means a reference. Not all of the new HTML5 elements are covered, nor is CSS3 provided full coverage. The repetition of concepts may aggravate experienced or impatient programmers: For people with some experience with these technologies, and for people who readily glean information from technical books upon first exposure to the given concept, the frequent repetition in this book would border on tiresome, if it weren't presented so pleasantly, oftentimes with humor. On the other hand, the Head First books are predicated on the approach of presenting information in different formats, to maximize learning. Any newbie should appreciate this volume's clear explanations, even if they are presented multiple times, but differently. Also, there is plenty of testing of one's knowledge, to reinforce what has been learned.

Classical Net Review - Boulez - Sur Incises, Messagesquisse, Anthèmes 2
september 2011 by gdw
Anthèmes 2, one of the Sacher works, gave me the most problems, but not because of the music, quite straightforward and very lovely. It seems that the violinist plays against itself in some sort of combination of recording and live electronic wizardry, but the details are lost in Fink's description. If anyone can untangle the snarl, I'd be grateful to know exactly what goes on. At any rate, it sounds a lot less intellectually formidable than Fink's description: like a solo violin against a violin ensemble in some super-echo chamber.

Neopythonic: Progressive vs. Conservative
april 2011 by gdw
The parallel with Microsoft users vs. Java users seems to be all too obvious: Microsoft as the strict father: If you are loyal you will be rewarded, but if you stray you will be punished; whereas in the Java (or Python) community benefits and moral goodness flow from helping each other (which includes sharing open source software, and, apparently, bikeshedding :-).

Jane Lui: Goodnight Company - Glide Magazine
december 2010 by gdw
Unlike many unorthodox musicians who try too hard to prove their quirkiness, Goodnight Company succeeds because it thrives on textures and mood more than arrangements and production. Lui makes more use of empty space than bricolage and more reflection than bombast. It’s doubtful that even the fans who bankrolled the album could have expected it to be this good.

Book Review: Pragmatic Version Control Using Git [LWN.net]
july 2010 by gdw
april 13, 2009
Given the ubiquity of Git as a version control system throughout the free software community, one would expect there to be more books about it. So far, that is not the case—though there are indications that is changing—so Travis Swicegood's Pragmatic Version Control Using Git is welcome for those trying to come up to speed on Git. Overall, the book provides a nice starting point, though there are some rough spots.

Leadership By Numbers :: Jono Bacon's "The Art of Community" on PDF
january 2010 by gdw
Knowledge is not power, but learning is. As kids, we made art with paint-by-number kits. Simply matching the outline numbers with an oil paint gave us the illusion of mastery. I've worked in all facets of the IT industry: as IT management, as a consultant, systems administrator, developer and instructor. And, I still see a lot of paint-by-number projects which try to be the real thing. IT leadership is about reading the numbers, then going outside the lines and taking risks.
