Baltimore SDIY Group's HomePage
Hello & welcome to the homepage of the Baltimore SDIY Group, formerly known as The ElectroAcoustic Orchestra & the Baltimore SDIY Variable Ensemble.

I started this group in November of 2007 here in my hometown of Baltimore MD, in what was to have been an electronic music synthesizer users group to have discussions & demonstrations amongst like-minded individuals in the Baltimore/DC/VA areas. By May of 2008, the group quickly morphed into a live shows performance-based entity under the former title of The Baltimore SDIY Variable Ensemble

Open Thread: What is Virtuosity on a Drum Machine?
Electronic music has always had a funny relationship with musicianship. It isn’t playing a traditional instrument; instead, it lies somewhere between instrumentalism and composition, between playing and conducting. Sometimes, that scale is tipped away from virtuosity of any kind.

q3osc: an interactive musical performance environment
q3osc combines the fast-paced virtual playgrounds of FPS video games with the limitless possibilities afforded by dynamic interactive music programming languages. By exporting a variety of parameters from within the modified ioquake3 game engine over a data protocol called Open Sound Control, player movements and fired projectiles can be used to control sound synthesis and playback in a variety of computer music software. In short, this turns quake3-style levels into musical playgrounds, where hoardes of networked performers can play with sound and music in a communal experience.

Band performs live show on NYC Subway using iPhones | iPod & Entertainment | iOS Central | Macworld
The members of the New York band Atomic Tom found themselves in a dire position when their instruments were stolen earlier this month. Rather than give up the good fight, the scrappy musicians turned to their iPhones to make ends meet, rocking an impromptu performance of their song “Take Me Out” to a captive audience on an NYC Metro train.

realtimecomposers.com
The Cincinnati RealTime Composers was founded at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2005 under the instruction of Alan Bern. Moving from individual impulses to complex forms, the class sought to expose classical musicians to group improvisation. Now a regularly performing ensemble, the group has performed at a variety of venues, from concert halls to cafes. In December of 2006, the group presented their work at the first ever conference of the International Society for Improvised Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Performance, Technology and Science (9781555540791): Johannes Birringer: Books
... explores convergences between performance and science through an investigation of new technologies that drive computer-mediated, interactive art. Wide-ranging and richly illustrated essays uncover shifts that have occurred globally in the aesthetic understanding of performance within computer-augmented virtual and networked environments.

Johannes Birringer is a choreographer and media artist. He directs the Center for Contemporary and Digital Performance at Brunel University, West London. He is author of "Theatre, Theory, Postmodernism;" "Media and Performance;" and "Performance on the Edge." He is co-editor of "Dance and Cognition."

Cracked Media - The sound of Malfunction
From the mid-twentieth century into the twenty-first, artists and musicians manipulated, cracked, and broke audio media technologies to produce novel sounds and performances. Artists and musicians, including John Cage, Nam June Paik, Yasunao Tone, and Oval, pulled apart both playback devices (phonographs and compact disc players) and the recorded media (vinyl records and compact discs) to create an extended sound palette.

Vladimir Horowitz Plays Mozart Back in the USSR | Open Culture
Vladimir Horowitz, one of the great pianists of the 20th century, left Russia to settle in the United States in 1939. But, once the Cold War thawed, he famously returned home and played before rapt audiences. What we have here, I believe, is Horowitz playing Mozart’s Sonata in C Major during a 1986 recital Moscow.
