Apple Lossless Audio Codec
october 2011 by gdw
The Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is an audio codec developed by Apple and supported on iPhone, iPad, most iPods, Mac and iTunes. ALAC is a data compression method which reduces the size of audio files with no loss of information. A decoded ALAC stream is bit-for-bit identical to the original uncompressed audio file.
The Apple Lossless Audio Codec project contains the sources for the ALAC encoder and decoder. Also included is an example command line utility, called alacconvert, to read and write audio data to/from Core Audio Format (CAF) and WAVE files. A description of a 'magic cookie' for use with files based on the ISO base media file format (e.g. MP4 and M4A) is included as well.
The Apple Lossless Audio Codec sources are available under the Apache license.

Jeff Albert
december 2010 by gdw
Jeff Albert is a trombonist and improviser based in New Orleans, LA. Free jazz is the most accurate generic descriptor for his music, which places high value on melody and interaction, but is informed by his multi-faceted background and experiences. “Unreal, gorgeous, crazy, rudely alive,” is how author David Biedney has described Jeff’s music, and according to Cadence Magazine,”he maintains an ever flowing sense of continuity and enthusiasm.”

OpenContent - Defining the "Open" in Open Content
october 2010 by gdw
In this context, "open" refers to granting of copyright permissions above and beyond those offered by standard copyright law. "Open content," then, is content that is licensed in a manner that provides users with the right to make more kinds of uses than those normally permitted under the law - at no cost to the user.

Student Statement on The Right to Research (Right to Research)
october 2009 by gdw
Scholarly knowledge is part of the common wealth of humanity.
Unfortunately, not everyone has access to the scholarly literature, despite advances in communications technology. The high cost of academic journals restricts access to knowledge; in some fields, prices can reach $20,000 for a single journal subscription1 or $30 for an individual article.2 Despite these high prices, authors of scholarly articles are not paid for their work. The profits from these publications go solely to the publishers of the journals. A vast amount of research is funded from public sources – yet taxpayers are locked out by the cost of access.

Getting Yourself Out of the Business in Five Easy Steps « Jason Baird Jackson

In honor of the upcoming celebration of open access week and because I felt the need to write something other than administrative memos, I composed the following essay outlining my relationship to commercial scholarly publishing in the wake of concluding my work as editor of Museum Anthropology. It is offered here [CC BY NC SA 3.0] for those who might be interested in my thinking on one piece of the larger scholarly communications puzzle.

What is PortMedia?
PortMedia is a set of APIs and library implementations for music and other media.
PortMedia is open-source and runs on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux.
Currently, libraries support Audio I/O and MIDI I/O.
Who is PortMedia?
PortMedia is the result of discussion among many computer music researchers and developers. After considering many options, the group decided to endorse the work of Phil Burk and Ross Bencina who created the PortAudio library. Supporters and users of PortMedia are listed below. Our goal is to extend the PortAudio foundation to support MIDI, sound files, and perhaps other basic music software interfaces. You can help!

Yuri Timofeev has taken advantage of one of the key strengths of open source software – he took one application and made it better. In his case, the original application was the enterprise backup package Bacula. His improvement was to write a web interface – and so was born Webacula.
