The MaxLink java libraries enable communication between Processing and Max/MSP 4.5+ on both Mac and Windows.

Researchers at the MRC have developed a variety of bespoke software that facilitates the work that goes on in the centre, some of which is in the public domain. Notably there is a collection of Max MSP and puredata externals for dealing with ambisonics, and these algorithms are also available as VST and Audiounit plugins. The centre also produces commercial software including the MRC meter - a highly accurate audio metering plugin

c74 is an iPhone / iPod Touch app that let's you connect your device with Cycling '74's Max/MSP 5/6.

The massive improvement over existing interface layout apps is that the layout is dynamically controlled by Max. Therefore we can have the interface adapt to the tasks it has to perform in real-time.

This object library provides full integration of the Python scripting language into the Pure Data and the Max/MSP real-time systems. The Max/MSP port is not actively maintained but seems to work and be used nevertheless.

py loads Python modules and execute the functions therein.

Max uses the DLS synthesizer as its default MIDI output destination. You can send data directly from Max via MIDI to produce sound without using any external MIDI gear.
On the Macintosh, the default MIDI output is an AudioUnit DLS (Down-Loadable-Sounds) synthesizer. The AU DLS synth supports its own set of internal sounds as a General MIDI bank, and also provides support for Level 2 SoundFont files.

Max is a visual programming environment which allows you to custom build instruments and effects. Ableton announced 'Max for Live' when they launched Live 8. This means that Max and Ableton are now integrated, so you can build your own instruments (or tweak other people's) within Live.

On maxforlive.com users contribute to an online library of free Max for Live Devices that you can browse and search for in a number of userful ways (unlike existing forums). If you've ever used the Reaktor User Library, you know what I'm going after. On this site you can share your .amxd files (the new Max for Live device file type) with other users and make them easily accessible based on a number of attributes you assign.

Effective immediately, Cycling ’74 will discontinue sales of prebuilt Max-based audio plug-in packages. This includes Pluggo, Mode, Hipno, and UpMix. We will still continue to support current users as best we can, but there will be no further development on either the plug-in packages or their supporting technology.
