FTM&Co - ftm
5 days ago by gdw
FTM is a shared library for Max/MSP providing a small and simple real-time object system and a set of optimized services to be used within Max/MSP externals.
FTM = data structures
+ visualization/editors
+ file import/export (SDIF, MIDI, ...)
+ operators (expressions and externals)
The basic idea of FTM is to extend the data types exchanged between the objects in a Max/MSP patch by complex data structures such as sequences, matrices, dictionaries, break point functions, tuples and whatever might seem helpful for the processing of music, sound and motion capture data.
The FTM library and its Java editors are based on the jMax project and distributed under the Lesser GNU Public License (LGPL). The sources of FTM are available via CVS at SourceForge.net

ixi audio is an experimental project concerned with the creation of digital musical instruments and environments for generative music. We are interested in the computer as a workshop for building non-conventional tools for musicians, i.e. not trying to imitate or copy the tools that we know from the world of acoustic instruments or studio technology. We currently work with open source software such as SuperCollider, ChucK and Pure Data, but our aim is to distribute our applications packaged in a way that allows everybody to use them. Simplicity and ease of use together with depth in interaction and expressive scope is the aim of our experimental music software.

The Launch of a New Interface - Technology Review
august 2011 by gdw
The San Francisco game company Sifteo opened pre-orders for its interactive cubes today. The blocks have the simplicity of a child's toy, but they're loaded with sensors that are far from simple. The devices can detect their orientation and position with respect to other blocks. They also detect when they're flipped over, tilted, or pressed on

en_analyzer~ provides an interface to access The Echo Nest's audio analysis
API in Max/MSP. The object uploads the audio data in an identically-named
buffer~ object to The Echo Nest's servers for analysis, then stores and
outputs the analysis data in Max.

An experimental interface based on natural language input
Ubiquity was a Mozilla Labs experiment that was in development from 2008 to 2009. Its purpose was to explore whether a radically different type of interface to the Web — a task-centric, natural-language-based command line — could help us get common Web tasks done faster.
Development is currently on indefinite hiatus.

Journal of New Music Research
april 2010 by gdw
The Journal of New Music Research (JNMR) was founded (previously under the title Interface) in 1972. JNMR seeks to establish an interdisciplinary foundation for the creation and study of music by means of the most advanced technologies, by publishing material which is both scientifically rigorous and musically relevant. JNMR draws on disciplines ranging from musicology (music theory, aesthetics, sociology), psychology (from psychoacoustics to cognitive psychology - with emphasis on modelling), acoustics (including sound engineering), computer science (from signal processing to artificial intelligence), philosophy (epistemology and methodology) to brain sciences.
Major issues covered in the Journal include (but are not limited to): AI and Music; Algorithmic Composition; Cognitive Musicology; Digital Sound Analysis, Processing and Synthesis; Electro-Acoustic Music; Formal Music Theory; Interactive Systems; Multimedia Systems; Music Analysis; Music Information Retrieval; Music Perception and Cognition

OSCulator
december 2009 by gdw
OSCulator is a software that links your controllers to your music and video software. For example, with OSCulator, your Nintendo Wiimote or iPhone can talk to major MIDI sequencers or your favorite console emulator or even the Kyma sound design workstation.
OSCulator supports the OSC protocol which makes it able to be used with a wide variety of software and devices like SuperCollider, Processing, Max/MSP or the Lemur multitouch controller.

Deep thoughts on my music career
Yuri Timofeev has taken advantage of one of the key strengths of open source software – he took one application and made it better. In his case, the original application was the enterprise backup package Bacula. His improvement was to write a web interface – and so was born Webacula.
