Digital Toolbox
We are working on digital tools for extracting semantic meaning from raw data, and for applying emotion to generative music. Some of the tools aim to find phrase boundaries, measure onset density and detect emotion by fuzzy logic. Another set of tools will generate melody based using probabilistic methods.

Critical Digital Studies
april 2011 by gdw
Conceived as a global network for digital studies, Critical Digital Studies: A Reader represents a new style of thought directly emergent from net culture itself. Inspired by the same digital spirit that gave rise to the Open Architecture Movement, Shareware, and Web 2.0, Critical Digital Studies may be visualized as a creative mashup -- a method of critical digital studies which creatively mixes the very traditional human demand to understand the world in which we live with new ways of analyzing, relating, communicating, and living that is digital reality today.

— a development environment for making digital art
Field is an open-source software project initiated by OpenEnded Group, for the creation of their digital artworks. It is an environment for writing code to rapidly and experimentally assemble and explore algorithmic systems. It is visual, it is hybrid, it is code-based. We think that it has something to offer a diverse range of programmers and artists.
Based on ideas started at the MIT Media Lab, Field was in development in-house for around 6 years. But for the last 16 months it has been quietly available online as an open source project. We are pleased to announce the initial "beta" binary open-source releases for Intel-based Macs OS X 10.5 or 10.6.

How do pervasive digital devices—smartphones, iPods, GPS navigation systems, and cameras, among others—influence the way we use spaces? What’s This All About? - academhack - Thoughts on Emerging Media and Higher Education
july 2010 by gdw
I am an Assistant Professor of Emerging Media and Communications at the University of Texas at Dallas. My work centers on understanding the complex cultural transformations brought about by the change from an analog archive to one whose substructure is a digital network. Particularly I am interested in how traditional institutions-libraries, higher education, even democracy itself-will be altered in a post print society. To see some of my work visit the research page

Introduction to Digital Filters: with Audio Applications (9780974560717): Julius O. Smith III: Books
february 2010 by gdw
This book is a gentle introduction to digital filters, including mathematical theory, illustrative examples, some audio applications, and useful software starting points. The theory treatment begins at the high-school level, and covers fundamental concepts in linear systems theory and digital filter analysis. Various "small" digital filters are analyzed as examples, particularly those commonly used in audio applications. Matlab programming examples are emphasized for illustrating the use and development of digital filters in practice.

But the instrumental sounds and full 100-voice choir that Smith then coaxes from the machines, using a Nintendo Wii controller as his conductor’s baton, sound surprisingly acoustic, live, and real. Designing a Digital Portfolio, Second Edition
october 2009 by gdw
Portfolios have always been artists' most valuable tools for communicating their talents to the outside world, whether to potential employers or galleries or clients. But the days of sketches and slides have given way to arrangements of digital assets that are both simpler and more complex than their traditional analog counterparts.
Instructor and design professional Cynthia Baron covers all the facets that artists need to know, from choosing the best work for a particular audience to using various file formats to organizing, designing, and presenting the portfolio. Beautiful full-color illustrations demonstrate her instructions, and case studies throughout portray examples of attractive and effective portfolio design. This book gives artists at any level a creative edge, ensuring that their portfolios get noticed and help them stand out from the crowd.
