Software Carpentry » Ninety Second Pitch
This screencast is a quick introduction to the Software Carpentry project. Our mission is to help scientists be more productive by teaching them basic computing skills. The problem we’re trying to solve is that scientists often spend 40% or more of their time wrestling with software, but 95% or more of them are primarily self-taught. As a result, they spend hours doing things that should take minutes, reinvent a lot of wheels, and still don’t know if their results are reliable or not.

Our solution combines short, intensive workshops with self-paced online instruction. The benefit to the scientist is more confidence in their results and higher productivity: A day a week is common, and a ten-fold improvement isn’t rare.

The workshops cover the core skills needed to be productive in a small research team: basic programming, version control, testing, using the shell, relational databases, and matrix programming. The self-paced learning goes into more depth on these core topics, and looks at program design, spreadsheets, data management, and software lifecycles. All our content is available online under a Creative Commons license, so you can re-use and re-mix it freely.

Science - Creative Commons
The more we understand about science and its complexities, the more important it is for scientific data to be shared openly. It’s not useful to have ten different labs doing the same research and not sharing their results; likewise, we’re much more likely to be able to pinpoint diseases if we have genomic data from a large pool of individuals. Since 2004, we’ve been focusing our efforts to expand the use of Creative Commons licenses to scientific and technical research

Bill Gates' very full life after Microsoft - Fortune Tech
Here's how Gates describes his activities: "Everything I do has sort of a common theme, which is 'How do you organize innovation to have impact?  How do you facilitate the innovation, get the right group of people together, get the right resources, and have it have this impact on a large scale?'  And innovation, in my case, has some type of science or software programming or online information component. I want to help cut years off of how long it takes to solve these problems."

He has a term to describe the philosophy of his approach: creative capitalism
