Kyoko Kitamura -
january 2012 by gdw
Kyoko Kitamura is a vocal improviser and composer residing in Brooklyn. She does weird things with her voice and is often a side-person for various amazing musicians. Her own songs have mildly disturbing content which may stem from her experience as a one-time war reporter. She was also a Garfield comics translator in Japan.
Most recently, she can be heard on Anthony Braxton’s first ever studio-recorded opera “Trillium E.”

Computers Double the Number of Americans Involved in the Arts
february 2011 by gdw
A new National Endowment of the Arts study has looked back into the data from the 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts. Expanding the definition from "benchmark" activities (like going to the opera) to the creation and viewing of art or art-related content digitally has yielded a radically different picture of American's relationship to the arts.

january 2011 by gdw
Muriel Louveau focused on song and music producing what she calls contemporary medieval music – contemporary melodies inspired by ancient music as well as extra european sound, « my songs drive us into a cosmopolitan space and time somewhere at the crossroad of the other languages explains Louveau. Muriel has performed regularly over the Atlantic, especially in New York City, at Irving Plaza , and Brooklyn Academy of Music with the show ” The World Mysteries”. She has also performed live in the cutting edge Hotel “Le Cube” in Paris.

Silent Sounds… « silent listening
may 2010 by gdw
Andreas Bick, composer and sound artist based in Berlin, Germany, writes about sound related things (forgive wrong spellings and twisted grammar). Silent listening is about the fringes of music, the periphery where music turns into sheer sound - concrete, wild, sometimes stunningly beautiful.

Rufus Porter Museum
march 2010 by gdw
Artist, musician, teacher, inventor and founder of Scientific American magazine, Rufus Porter, thought well ahead of his time. Porter (1792-1884) began his artistic life as a painter of portraits. Later he painted the murals that have made him famous. He painted what he knew — landscapes depicting the farms around Bridgton, Maine, his childhood home, and seaport scenes of Portland, Maine, where he lived and studied as a young man.
Porter patented inventions that were useful in the home (a churn and cheese press) and out (a life preserver). The patent for his revolving rifle cylinder, sold to Samuel Colt, revolutionized the munitions industry. He designed and promoted airships that would fly people across the continent, although they were never built. He founded the Scientific American magazine in 1845, to encourage innovation in American arts and sciences.

Mark A. Lackey: Via pulchritudinis
december 2009 by gdw
On November 22, 2009, in the Sistine Chapel, Benedict XVI delivered an address to an audience of 250 singers, musicians, writers, painters, architects, sculptors, actors and film producers. The address, "You Are the Custodians of Beauty," suggested the possibility of "a via pulchritudinis, a path of beauty which is at the same time an artistic and aesthetic journey, a journey of faith, of theological enquiry."

In recent years, much of the discussion in the field of generative art has focused on complex systems and agent-based algorithms. While these can produce intriguing results, our aim lies in developing simple, deterministic and traceable generative processes. These simple processes have the advantage of more control: as they are highly determinable, their output is predictable and can therefore be easily refined through subsequent adjustments. We aim to show that a single deterministic process can generate a heterogeneous set of forms with an astounding degree of complexity.
