Algorithmic Music Composition With Linux - athenaCL | Linux Journal
Aug 16, 2010 By Dave Phillips
My experience with athenaCL has been a little different from my explorations of CM/Grace and CsoundAC. The system is organized in a unique manner that I found confusing at first. However, my initial confusion quickly gave way to amazement, and I must confess that I've become a devoted user.

The use of Python in CsoundAC, Steven Yi's blue, and Oeyvind Brandtsegg's ImproSculpt indicates that Python has a special affinity to the task of music composition by algorithm. Indeed, the language is extensible, relatively easy to learn, and performs decently on modern hardware. However, rendering audio in realtime is not one of Python's strengths, so in athenaCL the task gets handed off to a designated audio rendering subsystem such as Csound.

Packet capture is one of the most fundamental and powerful ways to do network analysis. You can learn virtually anything about what is going on within a network by intercepting and examining the raw data that crosses it. Modern network analysis tools are able to capture, interpret and describe this network traffic in a human-friendly manner.

Synthesis Tool Kit (STK) Intro
This intro provides a ``getting started'' guide for the Synthesis Tool Kit (STK) [1,2] under Linux [5] and Mac OS X. This guide is aimed at developers of STK software, as opposed to mere users. As a result, a couple of modifications will be introduced to facilitate software development (i.e., debugging C++ code). It is also assumed that some variant of UNIX is the resident operating system. It is assumed that the reader already has some familiarity with programming in C and ideally also C++

Fortunately, there is a long list of excellent music applications available for Linux. If you choose one of the Linux distributions recommended last week, many of them come preinstalled,
