This collection arose out of a discussion between Julia Bolton Holloway and R.A. Ross on Med-Rel, a list dedicated to the study of medieval religion. During the discussion, list members articulated a pressing need to address some prevalent misconceptions about the Middle Ages before a more general audience. This electronic book is the result.
In its diversity, the following collection reveals a very important facet of medieval study. Often, the Middle Ages, which arguably comprise about 1100 years, are (if I may use the plural again) considered by those just introduced to the field as one homogeneous, temporal and cultural lump. But as the variety of subjects addressed here implies, the Middle Ages were no simpler a time than our own. We hope that this collection can serve to introduce that variety and to orient interested readers towards more detailed studies.
Each contribution is brief, and some are linked to longer studies. All contributors recommend books for further reading. A number of essays have yet to be posted, so Misconceptions is always growing. If you would like to contribute an essay, please contact me at miscon@bede.net. Be sure to check back occasionally (command-D to bookmark). I am joined by my co-editor Bryon Grigsby in saying that it has been a privilege to compile this collection. We hope we have done the contributions justice, and apologize beforehand for any errors. There are two kinds of Traditionalists. One group has a great appreciation for the Tridentine Mass (the pre Vatican II Liturgy) as well as other traditional devotions. This group is loyal to the Church and presents no problem. The other group rejects all of the changes which came about after Vatican II. They reject the new liturgy and consider themselves to be champions of the Council of Trent. Some even claim that there hasn’t been a legitimate pope since Pius XII (1958). Mr. McElhinney has done a masterful job in addressing the accusations of this second group of Traditionalists. Drawing on the writings of the Early Church Fathers, papal encyclicals, Canon Law and Scripture he demonstrates conclusively that the "gates of hell" have not prevailed against Jesus' Church.

The Boston Catholic Journal is an online collection of "reflections on life lived authentically in Christ." Though no information is provided regarding the authorship of the articles offered here, or the sponsorship of the site, the content provided speaks volumes on the quality of both. The articles cover a wide variety of topics and are all well-written and thought-provoking. In addition to the articles on general topics, there are also a number of interesting special features, such as Letters from Nuns, Poetry, or Thoughts in Passing. All of these make this site worth an extended visit.

The Apostolate for Family Consecration is a U.S. Roman Catholic lay movement headquartered in Bloomingdale, Ohio. Founded in 1975 by Jerry and Gwen Coniker, it was given Pontifical Status in 2007.
The Apostolate describes its mission as being called "to consecrate families to the Holy Family and in the truths of our Faith in the spirit of Pope John Paul II, thus enabling them to live their baptismal vocation and be effective evangelizers and people of faith in the parishes and movements they belong to." Its motto is "All for the Sacred and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus; all through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary; all in union with St. Joseph." The group is much influenced by St. Louis de Montfort and Pope John Paul II.

The following are the opening words from Irenaeus's "Against Heresies". I take them as my own as the complete explanation for why the Aquinas Catholic Site exists. Everything on this site I submit for the future judgement of Holy Church, wishing to hold nothing which is not conformable in every way with the true Faith.

The Church Music Association of America (founded in 1874) is an association of Catholic musicians and others who have a special interest in music and liturgy, active in advancing Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, and other forms of sacred music, including new composition, for liturgical use. Other good sites and books defend Catholicism. A good and joyful inquisition would let the Church refocus itself on Jesus-Eucharist, "source and summit of the whole Christian life" [Lumen Gentium, #11].

Opus Dei (“Work of God,” in Latin) is a hierarchical institution of the Catholic Church, a personal prelature. Its purpose is to contribute to the evangelizing mission of the Church. Specifically, it educates people about the universal call to sanctity and the sanctifying value of ordinary work. Opus Dei was founded by Saint Josemaría Escrivá in 1928.

Saint Patrick's Basilica has a long history in the City of Ottawa, being its first English-speaking Roman Catholic Parish. Your Church was completed in 1875 and was declared a Basilica on Saint Patrick's Day, March 1995.
Beautiful as it is, Saint Patrick's Basilica is primarily a place of worship and repentance - Catholics citywide make use of the confessional at Saint Patrick's. It also serves the downtown core and offers Masses before work (7:00a.m., 8:00a.m.), during lunch (12:15p.m.), and after the workday (4:30p.m.), with confessions before each service, and six Masses for Sunday Obligation.
