Welcome to Tim's Online Desk
13 days ago by fridalee
Welcome to my Online Desk! I have created this website in order to share information about myself. I have a Masters and Ph. D. in Church History from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. My most recent teaching positions include Adjunct Instructor in the REACH program at Trinity International University, Deerfield, IL, and Visiting Adjunct at Jos ECWA Theological Seminary in Jos, Nigeria. In the fall of 2005 I began teaching as an adjunct for both Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I have been asked to also teach as an adjunct for The College at Southwestern beginning in the fall of 2006.
My current/recent projects include:
Leading a History of Christianity Seminar at Fielder Road Baptist Church in Arlington, Spring 2006
Teaching Systematic Theology I and II for SWBTS in Marshall, TX, 2005-2006 academic year
Teaching Church History I and II for NOBTS in Shreveport, LA, 2005-2006 academic year
Teaching classes for The College at Southwestern, beginning Fall 2006
Writing Articles for The Southern Baptist Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization
Book review for Baptist History & Heritage
Leading a college winter retreat for First Baptist Church, Boone, NC in January 2007
In addition to a continued desire to expand my knowledge, I enjoy participation in my local church. My wife and I are active members in an adult Sunday School class and assist with an after school program. I have also made contact with the regional SIM (Serving in Mission) director and have made myself available for various volunteer needs.
It is my long-term desire to find a teaching position in a local college or seminary. I believe this is my calling in life. I also see and feel a call to play a part in academic mission trips, whether they be short or long-term. For the next few years, however, I will remain in the DFW area as my wife will not complete her surgical residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX until the summer of 2009.
I do hope that you find the information contained in this website to be helpful and useful. If you have any questions and wish to contact me, please do so by email.
Sincerely,
Timothy M. McAlhaney, Ph. D.

The Crescat | Katrina Fernandez
4 weeks ago by fridalee
Fortified with vitamin BXVI. Not a substitute for regular mass attendance. Side effects may include mackerel snapping.
*****
I started writing The Crescat in the fall of 2006, shortly after my conversion, with the sole intent of using the format for apologetics to answer my family’s questions regarding my new found faith. It sort of worked with 3 family members reverting back to our ancestral faith but it turns out, my blog had nothing to do with that. I dragged them to mass and gave them rosaries and that seemed to do the trick.
Seeing that there was nothing I could write that would be more influential than actual actions, like prayer and mass attendance, I made The Crescat a Catholic humor blog offering myself up as penance for my obvious arrogance and spiritual pride- as if my blog and writings could take credit for the conversion of sinners.
Since then, my writings have ranged from politics, relationships, parenting, the arts, satire and good old fashioned self depricating humor. In a constant battle against myself and cynicism I am forced to find the humor and beauty in all situations. It was either this or start smoking again.
What is a “Crescat”? It is Latin for “thrive” or “flourish”. I first encountered the word in the stain glass images that dominate Belmont Abbey in North Carolina. It’s the slogan for the Benedictine’s of this monastery. You can find “Crescat” scrolled at the bottom of large oak trees in their glass windows. Since Benedictines take the unique vow of stability the oak tree symbolizes this in their hearty deep roots. Therefore, Crescat becomes a command for them… take root and thrive, flourish in faith!
And it is from that which I drew the name of this blog, and from that in which you are now exposed to my crescatological musings- a schizophrenic hodge-podge about parenting, lip stick, Nathan Fillion, domesticity, Downton Abbey, chickens, girly blather, Catholicism, political rantings, and art all usually composed during fits of insomnia around 2am.

Called to Communion - Catholic and Reformed Dialogue
5 weeks ago by fridalee
Who are the members of Called to Communion?
We are Christians who love Jesus the Messiah, love the faith, love the Scriptures and love the Catholic Church. We are Catholics, but none of us was born or raised in the Catholic Church. We arrived in the Catholic Church in diverse ways but through a similar path involving spiritual formation within the Reformed tradition of confessional Protestantism. We are grateful for all that we learned about the Christian faith in the Reformed tradition. We are also grateful for the piety that we found within the Reformed congregations to which we belonged, and for the love for truth that is a significant aspect of the Reformed tradition. We do not view ourselves as having left our Reformed faith behind, but rather as having found its fullness in the Catholic Church.
What is the Purpose of Called to Communion?
We believe that Christ is calling His Church to be one, as He and the Father are one. This is the prayer and the desire of our Savior’s heart and therefore it is also our desire. Our aim is to effect reconciliation and reunion between Catholics and Protestants, particularly those of the Reformed tradition. We hope to accomplish this by removing obstacles founded upon misunderstandings as well as by engaging in charitable discussion of genuine disagreements, in a context of continual prayer for each other and for the unity of all God’s people. We believe that genuine unity comes through truth and never by forsaking or compromising the truth.

Preaching Peace | Educating the Church in Jesus’ Vision of Peace
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Preaching Peace was conceived as a hermeneutic tool to help clergy as they preached the gospel from a peacemaking perspective utilizing the mimetic theory. Preaching Peace went online in November 2002 edited by Michael Hardin and Rev. Jeff Krantz (Episcopal). The website has since expanded to include a team of over 12 distinctive writers. We now serve over 10,000 visitors a month.

Ars Disputandi - The online journal for Philosophy of Religion
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Ars Disputandi is the first online journal for the philosophy of religion. It publishes refereed articles, literature surveys and discussion notes, as well as book reviews and bibliographies. Unlike traditional journals, it will not appear in issues; papers that are accepted will be immediately published online. AD does not aim to be a rival to established philosophy of religion paper journals, but to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and arguments. AD is concerned to promote research and discussion of issues in the philosophy of religion by providing for the fast publication of contributions to ongoing debates.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is an assembly of the hierarchy of the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands who jointly exercise certain pastoral functions on behalf of the Christian faithful of the United States. The purpose of the Conference is to promote the greater good which the Church offers humankind, especially through forms and programs of the apostolate fittingly adapted to the circumstances of time and place. This purpose is drawn from the universal law of the Church and applies to the episcopal conferences which are established all over the world for the same purpose.

Websites offer the most efficient way to find movie information and reviews. The list below includes both general websites where you can find information on literally thousands of movies, as well as websites that offer reviews from a Christian perspective. Of those with a Christian orientation, some are mainly interested in offering warnings about aspects of a movie that viewers might find offensive, others seek to draw moralistic analogies between the Bible and movies, and still others focus on bringing theological insight to bear on the interpretation of movies. My hope is that these sites will contribute to serious reflection on the intersection of film and faith. Although you can find hundreds of websites on movies, this list of suggestions includes many of the sites that I have found most helpful. Your suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?
9 weeks ago by fridalee
They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? is dedicated to the art of motion picture film-making and most specifically to that one particular individual calling the shots from behind the camera - the film director. The 950-plus directors listed within these web pages range from the great geniuses of cinema (Godard, Welles, Hitchcock, etc.) to the great studio auteurs of the 40's and 50's (Hawks, Siodmak, Fuller, etc.), to the European masters (Buñuel, Renoir, Bresson), to the modern-day breed (Tarantino, The Coen Brothers, Kiarostami).
They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? should be viewed primarily as a cinematic traffic cop. In other words, we'll guide you in the direction of each director's best work (both from our own perspective and also from a critical-acclaim perspective). We'll also point you in the direction of each director's full filmographies (courtesy of links to the Internet Movie Database and the All-Movie Guide) and other valuable resources (via links to relevant pages and relevant reading materials). We firmly believe that They Shoot Pictures is, if nothing else, an excellent starting tool for aspiring movie buffs to begin (and also plan) their 'serious' film-viewing experiences.
Please note that the directors listed (with individual pages) within this website (Directors A-L; Directors M-Z) are those directors whose work we are familiar with. In some cases, very familiar (Hitchcock, Ford, Godard), and in some cases, not so familiar (Zulawski, Yuzna, Widerberg).
