Manhattan Institute
For 30 years, the Manhattan Institute has been an important force in shaping American political culture and developing ideas that foster economic choice and individual responsibility. We have supported and publicized research on our era's most challenging public policy issues: taxes, health care, energy, the legal system, policing, crime, homeland security, urban life, education, race, culture, and many others. Our work has won new respect for market-oriented policies and helped make reform a reality.

The Independent Institute
A nonprofit, scholarly research and educational organization which sponsors comprehensive studies on political economy.
The mission of The Independent Institute is to transcend the all-too-common politicization and superficiality of public policy research and debate, redefine the debate over public issues, and foster new and effective directions for government reform.

Today, the influence of partisan interests is so pervasive that public policy debate has become too politicized and is largely confined to a narrow reconsideration of existing policies. In order to fully understand the nature of public issues and possible solutions, the Institute’s program adheres to the highest standards of independent scholarly inquiry. The Institute’s program is pursued to rigorous standards without regard to any political or social biases.

The Locke Institute was founded in 1989 as an independent, non-partisan educational and research organization. Named for the philosopher and political theorist John Locke (1632-1704), the Institute ascribes to his theory that society is based on the law of nature and that the individual is the ultimate source of political sovereignty.
The Institute endorses Locke's proposition that individuals are possessed of inalienable rights to life, liberty, and property. It is the principal function of the state to uphold these rights since free individuals otherwise would not enter into political society.

In The Constitution of Liberty (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1960)
"At all times sincere friends of freedom have been rare, and its triumphs have been due to minorities, that have prevailed by associating themselves with auxiliaries whose objects often differed from their own; and this association, which is always dangerous, has sometimes been disastrous, by giving to opponents just grounds of opposition." - Lord Acton

The Independent Review
The INDEPENDENT REVIEW is the acclaimed interdisciplinary journal devoted to the study of political economy and the critical analysis of government policy. Edited by the noted historian and economist, Robert Higgs, The Independent Review is thoroughly researched, peer-reviewed, and based on scholarship of the highest caliber. However, unlike so many other journals, it is also provocative, lucid, and written in an engaging style. Ranging across the fields of economics, political science, law, history, philosophy, and sociology, The Independent Review boldly challenges the politicization and bureaucratization of our world, featuring in-depth examinations of past, present, and future policy issues by some of the world’s leading scholars and experts.

Undaunted and uncompromising, this is the journal that is pioneering future debate!

FDAReview.org, a project of The Independent Institute
Medical drugs and devices cannot be marketed in the United States unless the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants specific approval. We argue that FDA control over drugs and devices has large and often overlooked costs that almost certainly exceed the benefits. We believe that FDA regulation of the medical industry has suppressed and delayed new drugs and devices, and has increased costs, with a net result of more morbidity and mortality. A large body of academic research has investigated the FDA and with unusual consensus has reached the same conclusion.

Drawing on this body of research, we evaluate the costs and benefits of FDA policy. We also present a detailed history of the FDA, a review of the major plans for FDA reform, a glossary of terms, a collection of quotes from economists who have studied the FDA, and a reference section with many webbed links. A more detailed table of contents follows. We are happy to receive comments and criticisms.

The Centre for Civil Society is an independent, non-profit, research and educational organisation devoted to improving the quality of life for all citizens of India by reviving and reinvigorating civil society.

But we don't run primary schools, or health clinics, or garbage collection programs. We do it differently: we try to change people's ideas, opinions, mode of thinking by research, seminars, and publications. We champion limited government, rule of law, free trade, and individual rights.

We are an ideas organisation, a think tank that develops ideas to better the world. We want to usher in an intellectual revolution that encourages people to look beyond the obvious, think beyond good intentions, and act beyond activism.

We believe in the individuality and dignity of all persons, and their right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. We trust their judgement when they cast their vote in a ballot box and when they spend their money in a marketplace...

The Freeman | Ideas On Liberty
The Freeman: Ideas on Liberty, is the flagship publication of the Foundation for Economic Education and one of the oldest and most respected journals of liberty in America. For almost 50 years it has uncompromisingly defended the ideals of the free society.
Through its articles, commentaries and book reviews, several generations of Americans have also learned the consequences and contradictions that inevitably result from collectivism, interventionism, and the welfare state.
No other magazine, newspaper, or scholarly journal introduces readers to so many implications of what the free society is all about: its moral legitimacy, its tremendous efficiency, and its liberating effects in every area of life.
That is why The Freeman has attracted such a wide range of readers — from high school students to college professors, from home-schooling parents to doctors, businessmen, and even the President of the United States.

The magazine is edited by McConnell and published by Ron Unz. TAC represents a traditionalist, anti-war and paleoconservative voice against the dominance of what it sees as a neoconservative media establishment. It also has ties with paleolibertarians and libertarian conservatives although in 2005, the TAC has been critical of libertarianism as it has been described by Robert Locke as 'the Marxism of the Right' where it supports mass immigration, degenerate practises and economic greed. In 2009 Reihan Salam wrote that it had "gained a devoted following as a sharp critic of the conservative mainstream."

An Introduction to American Law for Undergraduates and Others

This web site offers an annotated reading list designed to give beginning students of the American legal system a basic understanding of the fundamentals of that system, and an appreciation of the role the legal system has played in America's achievement of levels of freedom and material abundance beyond anything the world had previously seen.

A student encountering the legal system for the first time can find it a foreboding subject - complex, technical, deep. Our goal here is to demonstrate that, at one level of understanding, quite the opposite is true. The American legal system, properly understood, depends on a few basic concepts that can be quickly grasped by a serious student. The most important of these concepts are private property ownership, freedom of contract, and limited government.
