Misconceptions About the Middle Ages | ORB: The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies
10 days ago by fridalee
Edited by Stephen J. Harris and Bryon L. Grigsby
*****
This collection arose out of a discussion between Julia Bolton Holloway and R.A. Ross on Med-Rel, a list dedicated to the study of medieval religion. During the discussion, list members articulated a pressing need to address some prevalent misconceptions about the Middle Ages before a more general audience. This electronic book is the result.
In its diversity, the following collection reveals a very important facet of medieval study. Often, the Middle Ages, which arguably comprise about 1100 years, are (if I may use the plural again) considered by those just introduced to the field as one homogeneous, temporal and cultural lump. But as the variety of subjects addressed here implies, the Middle Ages were no simpler a time than our own. We hope that this collection can serve to introduce that variety and to orient interested readers towards more detailed studies.
Each contribution is brief, and some are linked to longer studies. All contributors recommend books for further reading. A number of essays have yet to be posted, so Misconceptions is always growing. If you would like to contribute an essay, please contact me at miscon@bede.net. Be sure to check back occasionally (command-D to bookmark). I am joined by my co-editor Bryon Grigsby in saying that it has been a privilege to compile this collection. We hope we have done the contributions justice, and apologize beforehand for any errors. We owe large debts of thanks. But there are so many people to thank that we can only ask leave to be grateful to all. All contributions are copyrighted to their respective authors. So, as the Venerable Bede said, "Lege Feliciter!"

n Annotated Bibliography of Printed and Online Primary Sources for the Middle Ages
Created by the Center for Medieval Studies, Fordham University
Edited by Maryanne Kowaleski, Fordham University
Assistant Editor Morgan Kay, Fordham University
*****
This database provides a searchable bibliography of texts - from private letters, wills, and household accounts to literary works, philosophical treatises, chronicles, court proceedings, church records, and a host of other documents - that were written in the Middle Ages and are now available in printed or online editions and translations. The aim is to provide annotated entries that include information on the genre, contents, archival reference and original language of the text, as well as whether the publication includes a translation, introduction, appendices, glossary, and index. Where appropriate, the bibliography also includes hyperlinks to sources that are online.
Begun in Summer 2003, this database was designed to record details about printed and online primary sources that can shed light on the history, literature, culture, and religion of the middle ages. In Phase I, we are focusing on primary sources that have been translated into English and are accessible in most college libraries or online. The database is currently weighted towards primary sources relating to England, France, and Ireland, but we are now adding more materials for other European countries. The primary sources included here date primarily from the period between roughly 300 and 1500, although there are sources that date from before and after these years.

The Crescat | Katrina Fernandez
4 weeks ago by fridalee
Fortified with vitamin BXVI. Not a substitute for regular mass attendance. Side effects may include mackerel snapping.
*****
I started writing The Crescat in the fall of 2006, shortly after my conversion, with the sole intent of using the format for apologetics to answer my family’s questions regarding my new found faith. It sort of worked with 3 family members reverting back to our ancestral faith but it turns out, my blog had nothing to do with that. I dragged them to mass and gave them rosaries and that seemed to do the trick.
Seeing that there was nothing I could write that would be more influential than actual actions, like prayer and mass attendance, I made The Crescat a Catholic humor blog offering myself up as penance for my obvious arrogance and spiritual pride- as if my blog and writings could take credit for the conversion of sinners.
Since then, my writings have ranged from politics, relationships, parenting, the arts, satire and good old fashioned self depricating humor. In a constant battle against myself and cynicism I am forced to find the humor and beauty in all situations. It was either this or start smoking again.
What is a “Crescat”? It is Latin for “thrive” or “flourish”. I first encountered the word in the stain glass images that dominate Belmont Abbey in North Carolina. It’s the slogan for the Benedictine’s of this monastery. You can find “Crescat” scrolled at the bottom of large oak trees in their glass windows. Since Benedictines take the unique vow of stability the oak tree symbolizes this in their hearty deep roots. Therefore, Crescat becomes a command for them… take root and thrive, flourish in faith!
And it is from that which I drew the name of this blog, and from that in which you are now exposed to my crescatological musings- a schizophrenic hodge-podge about parenting, lip stick, Nathan Fillion, domesticity, Downton Abbey, chickens, girly blather, Catholicism, political rantings, and art all usually composed during fits of insomnia around 2am.

A Journal for the Study of Tradition, Place, and 'Things Divine'
*****
ANAMNESIS is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, academic journal dedicated to the study of Tradition, Place, and ‘Things Divine.’ [The] journal will strive to avoid ideological commitments and, instead, be open to diverse scholarship relating to our major themes.
Tradition signals the importance of custom and our relation to the past. In this sense, it can be a guide to human conduct and a constituent of rationality.
Place is an existential category, like the human body, that connotes focus on the limits of human scale, the value of human attachment to historical community and locality, and the value of human connection to nature and the land. Issues of agrarian values, decentralization, localism, and other such concerns are themes that the journal hopes to explore.
’Things Divine’ is Cicero’s phrase, and it is part of his famous claim that “wisdom” entails “knowledge of things divine and human.” The expression is intended to encompass a broad swath of meanings. On the one hand, it connotes openness to theological and philosophical inquiry into what is thought to be ultimate and unconditioned; and so we welcome exploration of topics related to Logos, natural law theory, and other such themes. On the other hand, we are also open to the mythos view of culture—i.e., that many basic truths about reality, which people experience, are often expressed in myths.
With respect to possible thinkers whose work might fit well with the journal’s concerns, they are legion. Here are just a few: Hans-Georg Gadamer, Charles Taylor, Edmund Burke, Stanely Hauerwas, T.S. Eliot, Wendell Berry, Richard Weaver, Rene Girard, Lord Acton, Alasdair MacIntyre, Christopher Lasch, Leo Strauss, Allen Tate, John Randolph of Roanoke, David Hume, James Fenimore Cooper, Robert Nisbet, Alexis de Tocqueville, Eric Voegelin, John Taylor of Caroline, and Michael Oakeshott. This list is far from exhaustive, and many other fine thinkers from across the ideological spectrum could be included and will be welcomed.

St. Luke Productions | Renewing the Culture through Theater and the Media
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Saint Luke Productions is dedicated to evangelizing and renewing the culture through theater and the media.
Our mission is accomplished through the touring of live professional dramas, and the production and distribution of feature films and DVDs through our media division, Luke Films. Our productions are based on historical, scriptural, and modern day stories that inspire audiences to a deeper desire for the Truth of Jesus Christ. We also are committed to the education and encouragement of artists and young people who share our vision: through internships, workshops and employment in our office and production company. These opportunities include acting, theatrical lighting and sound, touring, cinematography, and film and sound editing. In accord with the teachings of John Paul II and the Second Vatican Council, we believe that a renewal of the culture depends upon a renewal of family life. Our organization has been established within the context of family, and with the purpose of encouraging a respect for the family, both in our productions and in our work environment.
By bringing the lives of the Saints to modern audiences, Saint Luke Productions fosters vocations and actively participates in the “New Evangelization” of our culture. We see the fruits when traveling throughout the country touring with our live dramas, and through the response to our films and DVDs. Although we are Catholic in our vision, we have witnessed how these stories have touched and changed the lives of people of all faiths. It is humbling to experience this for we know it is God, not Saint Luke Productions, who touches souls. Please pray for our mission, that we can continue to produce new dramas that spread the Faith.

LifeIssues.net: Clear thinking about crucial issues. | Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Several thousand articles on the Culture of Life; Jerry Novotny, O.M.I.
*****
Dear Friends,
There are crucial issues that face us today: abortion, aids, bioethics, birth control, when life begins, population concerns, post-abortion healing, etc. But far too often our public debates are long on emotion and short on clear thinking. Along the way, respect for the dignity of human life gets lost in the rhetoric. Our purpose is to promote a “Culture of Life” in which human freedom will find its authentic meaning by joining forces with truth, life and love. This culture “needs new lifestyles which will show respect for the dignity of every individual, especially the weakest, and which will recognize the value of human sexuality in the development of the person.” (Evangelium Vitae)
This website hopes to help change the present situation by providing clear thinking about these most crucial issues. The project was started on September 1st, 2000. We are blessed by the support of serious scholars and good people who are donating their writings. We hope that Oblates and interested visitors will feel inspired to contribute their own well–reasoned writings and research papers.

AD2000 - a journal of religious opinion
6 weeks ago by fridalee
The Thomas More Centre has been publishing AD2000 since April 1988. It was begun by B.A. Santamaria for reasons which he describes in the first editorial, An Act of Folly or an Act of Faith?
150 issues later, in August 2001, the raison d'etre of AD2000 was restated by Michael Gilchrist in his article After 14 years, why does AD2000 continue? Michael concludes:
" ...the strengthening of orthodoxy through John Paul II's leadership, the leadership of new bishops, the rise of new movements in the Church and the consolidation of a determined laity are what constitute the beginning of a revival.
AD2000 is committed to continuing its modest role in helping reconstruct and consolidate a new culture of life and orthodox Christian faith in Australia."

Crisis Magazine | A Voice for the Faithful Catholic Laity | Catholic Opinion
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Crisis has conceived its mission around the Holy Father’s insights. Each day, Crisis will remind countless Catholics of their heritage, give them the confidence to defend the common good, a just society, the teachings the Church, the family, the dignity of work and the sanctity of life. Our authors hope to help the new laity (and clerical readers) form both their intellect and their spirituality in a scholarly, but accessible, way.
Crisis will analyze, discuss, and propose—from a variety of prudential positions— sane solutions to social and economic problems. We hope not merely to arm our readers with the arguments necessary for navigating the ideological (and theological) minefields of the day, but to do so by proceeding into the temporal order with charity and humility. There is seldom a single Catholic solution to the challenges that beset us.
We hope that the staff of Crisis continue to display all the doggedness and the fidelity of the original editorial architects and contributors of this magazine. Our Catholic Faith and our society demand no less.

Journal for the Renewal of Religion and Theology
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Description
The Journal for the Renewal of Religion and Theology ( JRRT ) has ceased publication for the time being. JRRT has been published online as an 'Open Acess' journal and continues to be freely accessed by readers and contributors free of charge. Papers are not currently being accepted. Papers, articles and essays already submitted and published conform to the academic guidelines set out in 'submissions'. Papers have been subjected to peer-review before publication. Pertinent articles, essays and reviews have also been published.
Focus & Scope
Material has been published that explores the widest field of religion and theology - especially aspects that might not have normally received focus. JRRT deals with mainstream Western religions and spirituality, along with Eastern and Middle Eastern religious streams. There has also been the possibility for submissions dealing with indigenous religious culture along with new areas of religious development, and other religious and theological expressions that might not normally be addressed in mainstream studies.
JRRT encourages diversity along with rigorous thinking and research aimed at both established and emerging phenomena in the religious and theological fields. The diverse membership of the editorial board endeavours to be an expression of the focus and scope of JRRT.

Mark P. Shea: One Voice in the New Evangelization
6 weeks ago by fridalee
You've reached the website of Mark P. Shea, as fun as the fun stuff found on my blog site, Catholic and Enjoying It!. Both this site and my blog are dedicated to the glory of the Blessed Trinity, the honor of Our Lady, the spread of the Catholic Faith, the works of mercy among all persons of good will, the dignity of the human person, and to all things good, joyous, beautiful and tasty. Here you will be able to
* Read my Sheavings;
* Get handy summaries of my current talks (there are always more coming) and find details about how to book me as a speaker;
* See various samples of my work in such varied media as magazines, radio, TV, public speaking, lyric writing, books, tapes, and Internet;
* Ask me questions about the Catholic Faith;
* Check out my calendar; and
* Oh, and if you like my work, please consider supporting a decidedly lower middle class writer with a wife and four kids by clicking on the "Make a Donation" button on the left side of the screen. Not to worry, it's a secure server.
All my work is offered with the prayer that Jesus Christ will be honored, that you will gain some benefit, and that we will all have a bit of fun.

Human Life International
Pro-Life Missionaries to the World
Pro-Life: Following the teaching of the Catholic Church, we defend life from the moment of conception until natural death for every human being.
Missionaries to the World: Our Catholic teachers and trainers work with those of all faiths and cultures all around the globe. We bring the Gospel of Life to places where the culture of death is only beginning to encroach on what are always, naturally, pro-life societies; or where it has already taken root. In many countries, HLI and its affiliates are the pro-life movement.
*****
The mission of HLI is to create effective opposition to the culture of death around the world. With affiliates and associates in over 100 countries, Human Life International is the largest international pro-life organization in the world.

Fr. Robert Barron's Word On Fire - Father Robert Barron Catholic Evangelist
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Word On Fire Catholic Ministries is a nonprofit global media organization which supports Catholic evangelical preaching, particularly the work of Father Robert Barron, and reaches millions of people to draw them into or back to the Catholic faith.
By evangelical is meant the bold proclamation of Jesus Christ as the source of conversion and new life. By Catholic is meant that this ministry utilizes the tremendous resources of the Roman Catholic tradition—art, architecture, poetry, philosophy, theology, and the lives of the saints in order to explain and interpret the event of Jesus Christ.
It is the hope of Word On Fire Catholic Ministries that this outreach will draw people into the body of Christ, which is the Church, and thereby give them access to all the gifts that Jesus wants His people to enjoy.
Word On Fire Catholic Ministries places an emphasis and urgency on the use of contemporary forms of media and innovative communication technologies.
*****
Father Robert Barron is an acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian. He is the Francis Cardinal George Professor of Faith and Culture at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago and also is the founder of Word On Fire (www.WordOnFire.org).
Fr. Barron is the creator and host of CATHOLICISM, a groundbreaking ten-part documentary series and study program about the Catholic faith. He is a passionate student of art, architecture, music and history, which he calls upon throughout his global travels in the making of the documentary.
Word On Fire programs are broadcast regularly on WGN America, Relevant Radio, CatholicTV, EWTN, the popular Word on Fire YouTube Channel, and the Word on Fire website, which offers daily blogs, articles, commentaries, and over ten years of weekly sermon podcasts. In 2010, Father Barron was the first priest to have a national show on a secular television network since the 1950s.

「俄巴底」(Obadiah)是誰?甚麼又是「俄巴底行動」(Obadiah's Mission)?
