Protestant Apologetics and Theology

The dove Noah released from the ark soared across the wide seas that engulfed the world, found no roost, and sought again the refuge of the great vessel. So man has departed from the truths of the bible, using wings of independence to seek distant horizons. But like the weary dove, through the years many have returned to the changeless certainty of God's Word following years of aimless flight. As one generation begins to drift from the Gospel, the following generation finds it anew, clinging tenaciously to its teachings as though they were the first to discover them.

Misconceptions About the Middle Ages | ORB: The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies
10 days ago by fridalee
Edited by Stephen J. Harris and Bryon L. Grigsby
*****
This collection arose out of a discussion between Julia Bolton Holloway and R.A. Ross on Med-Rel, a list dedicated to the study of medieval religion. During the discussion, list members articulated a pressing need to address some prevalent misconceptions about the Middle Ages before a more general audience. This electronic book is the result.
In its diversity, the following collection reveals a very important facet of medieval study. Often, the Middle Ages, which arguably comprise about 1100 years, are (if I may use the plural again) considered by those just introduced to the field as one homogeneous, temporal and cultural lump. But as the variety of subjects addressed here implies, the Middle Ages were no simpler a time than our own. We hope that this collection can serve to introduce that variety and to orient interested readers towards more detailed studies.
Each contribution is brief, and some are linked to longer studies. All contributors recommend books for further reading. A number of essays have yet to be posted, so Misconceptions is always growing. If you would like to contribute an essay, please contact me at miscon@bede.net. Be sure to check back occasionally (command-D to bookmark). I am joined by my co-editor Bryon Grigsby in saying that it has been a privilege to compile this collection. We hope we have done the contributions justice, and apologize beforehand for any errors. We owe large debts of thanks. But there are so many people to thank that we can only ask leave to be grateful to all. All contributions are copyrighted to their respective authors. So, as the Venerable Bede said, "Lege Feliciter!"

The Geoffrey Chaucer Website Homepage
12 days ago by fridalee
This site provides materials for Harvard University's Chaucer classes in the Core Program, the English Department, and the Division of Continuing Education. (Others of course are welcome to use it.) It provides a wide range of glossed Middle English texts and translations of analogues relevant to Chaucer's works, as well as selections from relevant works by earlier and later writers, critical articles from a variety of perspectives, graphics, and general information on life in the Middle Ages. At the moment the site concentrates on the Canterbury Tales, but the longer-term goal is to create a more general Chaucer page.

Welcome to Tim's Online Desk
13 days ago by fridalee
Welcome to my Online Desk! I have created this website in order to share information about myself. I have a Masters and Ph. D. in Church History from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. My most recent teaching positions include Adjunct Instructor in the REACH program at Trinity International University, Deerfield, IL, and Visiting Adjunct at Jos ECWA Theological Seminary in Jos, Nigeria. In the fall of 2005 I began teaching as an adjunct for both Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I have been asked to also teach as an adjunct for The College at Southwestern beginning in the fall of 2006.
My current/recent projects include:
Leading a History of Christianity Seminar at Fielder Road Baptist Church in Arlington, Spring 2006
Teaching Systematic Theology I and II for SWBTS in Marshall, TX, 2005-2006 academic year
Teaching Church History I and II for NOBTS in Shreveport, LA, 2005-2006 academic year
Teaching classes for The College at Southwestern, beginning Fall 2006
Writing Articles for The Southern Baptist Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization
Book review for Baptist History & Heritage
Leading a college winter retreat for First Baptist Church, Boone, NC in January 2007
In addition to a continued desire to expand my knowledge, I enjoy participation in my local church. My wife and I are active members in an adult Sunday School class and assist with an after school program. I have also made contact with the regional SIM (Serving in Mission) director and have made myself available for various volunteer needs.
It is my long-term desire to find a teaching position in a local college or seminary. I believe this is my calling in life. I also see and feel a call to play a part in academic mission trips, whether they be short or long-term. For the next few years, however, I will remain in the DFW area as my wife will not complete her surgical residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX until the summer of 2009.
I do hope that you find the information contained in this website to be helpful and useful. If you have any questions and wish to contact me, please do so by email.
Sincerely,
Timothy M. McAlhaney, Ph. D.

The Inadequacy of the Critique by Anders Nygren | by Fr. Georges Florovsky | OODE
18 days ago by fridalee
Despite Protestantism's endeavours to understand the Christian Faith from inside the Holy Bible, its 1500-year old alienation from the Tradition of the Church has not allowed it to perceive many things in the correct manner. Luther's prejudice towards monasticism, along with the juridical perception of things as inherited from Papism, led Protestantism to a misinterpretation of the relations between God and Man, with regard to salvation. As a result, more recent researchers like Anders Nygren have, in their attempts to preserve Luther's prejudices regarding salvation and monasticism, misconstrued many areas, including that of Love in the Christian Faith. The present analysis by George Florovsky is an insight into this Protestant error.

AllFaith.com: Got truth? Religion and Politics Are Welcome Here!
18 days ago by fridalee
I began AllFaith.com in 1997 as a place to share the insights of my life long spiritual quest. Since then my views have significantly changed and developed. AllFaith.com shares a glimpse into my studies and experiences and is, in some ways, an archive of these. I do not believe everything written here to be correct (so I'd never expect you to!).
The rabbis, including Rebbe Y'shua ("Master Jesus") promise: "Seek and you will find." Since 1969 I have sought Truth through the world's religious, philosophical and spiritual systems and independent of them. While I do not have all the answers, after 40 plus years of research and practice I do understand the questions much better. For more on this see Here
My current understandings are more fully presented at my JewToo Website. If you would like to study these authentically, non-Trinitarian Messianic Jewish teachings I invite you to take our free online lessons at Yeshiva Beth HaShem.

The Only 3 Bible Study Resources You Will Ever Need... Free! | by Dave Moser | Armchair Theology
19 days ago by fridalee
This guide is for lay (non-clergy, non-academic) Christians. These three tools, properly utilized, can unlock untold wonders in God’s word. If you are a seminarian, pastor, or professor your requirements will obviously exceed the limit of these tools but you won’t ever find yourself in a position where they aren’t helpful for a Bible study.
Here I will introduce the three tools and then recommend two awesome and free pieces of software to put them at your fingertips!

Bible Studies: All my life people have responded positively whenever I led a Bible study and I use this blog to publish Bible study questions and resources related to leading Bible studies.
Biblical Theology: I believe that the Bible is a single story with a climax at the cross. God created the world in order to demonstrate His outrageous love for us – dying on behalf of His enemies. Here you’ll find articles discussing the gospel’s presence throughout Scripture, biblical-theological methodology and related topics.

LOGIA is a quarterly journal of Lutheran theology published by The Luther Academy featuring articles from diverse contributors worldwide on exegetical, historical, systematic, and liturgical theology that promote the orthodoxy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. We cling to God's divinely instituted marks of the church: the gospel, preached purely in all its articles, and the sacraments, administered according to Christ's institution.

UM SITE DE NOTÍCIAS E ARTIGOS SOBRE A IGREJA E A FÉ CATÓLICA
*****
A Autoridade é a Igreja.
Neste sentido, é um auxílio me corrigir.

1 Pedro 3,15

SAINT ANDREW’S ABBEY, Valyermo, is a Roman Catholic Benedictine monastery: that is, a Christian community of men who have committed themselves to the search for God in corporate prayer, work, and obedience. The basis for monastic life at Valyermo is the Rule of St. Benedict, a formula for life in community which has been followed by monks and nuns for over fifteen-hundred years.

A Journal for the Study of Tradition, Place, and 'Things Divine'
*****
ANAMNESIS is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, academic journal dedicated to the study of Tradition, Place, and ‘Things Divine.’ [The] journal will strive to avoid ideological commitments and, instead, be open to diverse scholarship relating to our major themes.
Tradition signals the importance of custom and our relation to the past. In this sense, it can be a guide to human conduct and a constituent of rationality.
Place is an existential category, like the human body, that connotes focus on the limits of human scale, the value of human attachment to historical community and locality, and the value of human connection to nature and the land. Issues of agrarian values, decentralization, localism, and other such concerns are themes that the journal hopes to explore.
’Things Divine’ is Cicero’s phrase, and it is part of his famous claim that “wisdom” entails “knowledge of things divine and human.” The expression is intended to encompass a broad swath of meanings. On the one hand, it connotes openness to theological and philosophical inquiry into what is thought to be ultimate and unconditioned; and so we welcome exploration of topics related to Logos, natural law theory, and other such themes. On the other hand, we are also open to the mythos view of culture—i.e., that many basic truths about reality, which people experience, are often expressed in myths.
With respect to possible thinkers whose work might fit well with the journal’s concerns, they are legion. Here are just a few: Hans-Georg Gadamer, Charles Taylor, Edmund Burke, Stanely Hauerwas, T.S. Eliot, Wendell Berry, Richard Weaver, Rene Girard, Lord Acton, Alasdair MacIntyre, Christopher Lasch, Leo Strauss, Allen Tate, John Randolph of Roanoke, David Hume, James Fenimore Cooper, Robert Nisbet, Alexis de Tocqueville, Eric Voegelin, John Taylor of Caroline, and Michael Oakeshott. This list is far from exhaustive, and many other fine thinkers from across the ideological spectrum could be included and will be welcomed.

The Aquinas Catholic Site - A traditional Catholic site for the serious-minded.
5 weeks ago by fridalee
The following are the opening words from Irenaeus's "Against Heresies". I take them as my own as the complete explanation for why the Aquinas Catholic Site exists. Everything on this site I submit for the future judgement of Holy Church, wishing to hold nothing which is not conformable in every way with the true Faith.
"Inasmuch as certain men have set the truth aside, and bring in lying words and vain genealogies, which, as the Apostle says, 'minister questions rather than godly edifying which is in faith,' and by means of their craftily-constructed plausibilities draw away the minds of the inexperienced and take them captive, I have felt constrained, my dear friend[s], to compose [or present] the following treatise[s] in order to expose and counteract their machinations."
The following is an appropriate prayer for our times.
Apolytikion of St. John the Theologian
"Beloved Apostle of Christ our God, hasten to deliver a people without defense. He who permitted you to recline upon His bosom, accepts you on bended knee before Him. Beseech Him, O Theologian, to dispel the persistent cloud of nations, asking for us peace and great mercy."

Philosophy of Being | by Dr. Taylor Marshall of the College of Saint Thomas More
5 weeks ago by fridalee
Aristotle called the philosophy of being "first philosophy" because it does not examine the parts of reality (politics, math, music, history), but reality itself: existence, change, properties, space, time, causality, and possibility. This first philosophy is also called "metaphysics," deriving from the Greek words meta ("beyond") and physica ("physical").
I designed this site for students studying philosophy at the College of Saint Thomas More. Whether or not you are taking courses, I hope that you find the articles, outlines, and essays helpful.

TAYLOR'S MARSHALL'S NEXT BOOK & PODCAST
*****
This site is an outgrowth of my book The Catholic Perspective on Paul. It is based on the conviction that the Pauline epistles contain the primitive and pristine doctrines of the Catholic Faith. In the Pauline corpus we discover a Paul who is Catholic, a theologian who is sacramental, a churchman who is hierarchical, a mystic who is orthodox. Please enjoy the articles and listen to the talks ("PaulCasts") either directly in the site or via iTunes.

Called to Communion - Catholic and Reformed Dialogue
5 weeks ago by fridalee
Who are the members of Called to Communion?
We are Christians who love Jesus the Messiah, love the faith, love the Scriptures and love the Catholic Church. We are Catholics, but none of us was born or raised in the Catholic Church. We arrived in the Catholic Church in diverse ways but through a similar path involving spiritual formation within the Reformed tradition of confessional Protestantism. We are grateful for all that we learned about the Christian faith in the Reformed tradition. We are also grateful for the piety that we found within the Reformed congregations to which we belonged, and for the love for truth that is a significant aspect of the Reformed tradition. We do not view ourselves as having left our Reformed faith behind, but rather as having found its fullness in the Catholic Church.
What is the Purpose of Called to Communion?
We believe that Christ is calling His Church to be one, as He and the Father are one. This is the prayer and the desire of our Savior’s heart and therefore it is also our desire. Our aim is to effect reconciliation and reunion between Catholics and Protestants, particularly those of the Reformed tradition. We hope to accomplish this by removing obstacles founded upon misunderstandings as well as by engaging in charitable discussion of genuine disagreements, in a context of continual prayer for each other and for the unity of all God’s people. We believe that genuine unity comes through truth and never by forsaking or compromising the truth.

Welcome to Catholic Tradition
5 weeks ago by fridalee
We offer a treasury of holy images in partial reparation for the sacrilege and blasphemy of every kind depicted in art and for the impurity and debauchery bombarding the culture through the mass media and as a gift to countless Catholics whose churches have been gutted by the Modernists, and who have been robbed of their Sacred Heritage:
For our children and grandchildren, and those that follow after, that they should never forget . . .
This web site is dedicated to Mary Most Holy, the Great Mother of God, to invoke her aid in Defense of the Faith and our Catholic Tradition, in anticipation of the Reign of her Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, Sovereign King. We support the Catholic Restoration through the promulgation of the Traditional Latin [Roman] Mass along with all of the Sacraments in this most holy rite.
BECAUSE OF ALL THE BLASPHEMY AND IMPIOUS LIVING IN OUR PRESENT CULTURE AT THE END OF THE MILLENNIUM, AND BECAUSE WE SENSE THAT TIME IS SHORT, CATHOLIC TRADITION WILL BE CONCENTRATING ON DEVOTION TO THE TWO HEARTS OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS IMMACULATE MOTHER, AS OUR LADY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS AND AS OUR LADY OF FATIMA, HEAVEN'S PROPHET FOR THESE TIMES. THE CATHOLIC CLASSICS BOTH IN SPIRITUAL READING AND PRAYERS ARE ALSO AN IMPERATIVE FOR US.
CATHOLIC TRADITION IS HEREBY DEDICATING ITSELF TO PERPETUAL REPARATION AND THE EDUCATION OF CATHOLICS WHO HAVE BEEN POORLY CATECHIZED FOR ALMOST THREE GENERATIONS.

Fundamental Differences Between Catholic and non-Catholic Christian Worldviews
6 weeks ago by fridalee
One's basic religious assumptions act as a lens onto the world; like the proverbial rose-colored glasses, they color everything one sees, and the Protestant and Catholic lenses are no different. From what I've seen, the differences between these worldviews boil down to differences in the following:
* our various perceptions of the Incarnation
* sheer scope, i.e., the Catholic sense of time, space, and supernatural, preternatural, and natural orders
* our respective views of our co-operation with God and our interconnectedness
* the common Protestant “either/or” phenomenon -vs- the Catholic "both/and" way of dealing with various concepts

Preaching Peace | Educating the Church in Jesus’ Vision of Peace
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Preaching Peace was conceived as a hermeneutic tool to help clergy as they preached the gospel from a peacemaking perspective utilizing the mimetic theory. Preaching Peace went online in November 2002 edited by Michael Hardin and Rev. Jeff Krantz (Episcopal). The website has since expanded to include a team of over 12 distinctive writers. We now serve over 10,000 visitors a month.

Our Lady of the Rosary Library Traditional Catholic Homepage
6 weeks ago by fridalee
Our Lady of the Rosary Library is dedicated to working for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, as there is no more profitable endeavor. We provide literature to our readers that we feel will best aid them in perfecting themselves and saving their souls.
To our non-Catholic readers, we must stress that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church, the only Church founded by Our Lord, and we strongly exhort them to study carefully this assertion of the Church, having the good will to peruse some of our articles on this matter.
We would like to remind our Catholic readers that their salvation is by no means assured and they should struggle daily to battle the world, the flesh, and the devil. This should be a motivation to read and to learn about the Church, to seek out the Truth on various controversies, and to increase one's fervor. Above all, Catholics should heed the call of Our Lord to Win Souls For Him by ordering in volume the literature we offer, which includes several books and booklets, at such affordable prices and being zealous about distributing it to others.
We invite all to read the material we present, print it out, and distribute it if they desire, without changing the text. If you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to e-mail us.

The Teaching of the Church Fathers
*****
Purpose
This Web page is dedicated to the defense of Catholic doctrines within Patristic thought. The Catholic rule of faith consists of three coordinate and complementary authorities: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the teaching Church. The Church Fathers used both Scripture and Tradition to explain and defend the Catholic faith. Corunum's mission is to present the outline of Catholic doctrines as they appear in the writings of the Church Fathers.
What you will Find Inside
Corunum Apologetic Web site does not contain a library of the writings of the Church Fathers. There are a host of sites on the internet which offer the Ante-Nicene Fathers(ANF) edited by Cleveland Coxe and the Nicene Post-Nicene Fathers(NPNF) edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace.(cf. ANF/NPNF ). Inside you will find testimony from the Church Fathers on various Catholic doctrines listed in chronological order. Corunum's goal is to provide one new doctrinal topic with the accompanying traditional pedigree every month.
