A List Apart: Articles: A Dao of Web Design
9 minutes ago
What Zen was to the 70’s (most famously with motorcycle maintenance), the Tao Te Ching was to the 90’s. From Piglet and Pooh to Physics and back, many have sought sense in applying the Tao Te Ching to something (the Tao of Physics), or something to the Tao Te Ching (the Tao of Pooh). It can be a cheap trick, but lately it has struck me that there is more than a little to be understood about web design by looking through the prism of the Tao.

Closure Tools — Google Developers
The Closure Compiler is a tool for making JavaScript download and run faster. It is a true compiler for JavaScript. Instead of compiling from a source language to machine code, it compiles from JavaScript to better JavaScript. It parses your JavaScript, analyzes it, removes dead code and rewrites and minimizes what's left. It also checks syntax, variable references, and types, and warns about common JavaScript pitfalls.

Dear Python, Why Are You So Ugly Compared To Ruby? | GrokCode
29 days ago
Dear Python, something has been bothering me for a while. Its just that, well, ummm…you’re kind of ugly. Look, you are beautiful inside: Python is a beautiful language and the Python community is open and welcoming. But Python resources are ugly enough to affect usability and adoption. This is damaging to the community.

Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site
5 weeks ago
The problem caused by scripts is that they block parallel downloads. The HTTP/1.1 specification suggests that browsers download no more than two components in parallel per hostname. If you serve your images from multiple hostnames, you can get more than two downloads to occur in parallel. While a script is downloading, however, the browser won't start any other downloads, even on different hostnames.

Set a Dynamic Width / Height on Fancybox « Dark Crimson Blog
6 weeks ago
Fancybox is a powerful, lightweight jQuery based lightbox script that offers developers an impressive variety of content display options. I’ve used this script many times in the past (including my portfolio) and have never run into any limitations in terms of functionality until a recent project required many lightboxes with varying sizes. Since the site used Fancybox’s iframe functionality to display articles with custom-sized graphics and Fancybox’s API does not offer a dynamic size option I created a simple DOM based jQuery solution:

Don’t use IDs in CSS selectors? ❧ Oli.jp (@boblet)
Recently I came across the post by Matt Wilcox called CSS Lint is harmful, ranting about the useful free tool CSS Lint. The “Don’t use IDs in selectors” suggestion seems to have offended Matt the most, but I was surprised that many commenters also mentioned this as being a reason to avoid CSS Lint. This surprised me because smart people have been saying prefer classes to IDs for a while now. The article was light on reasons why this suggestion might be bad, but it boils down to:

I find myself in situations where I’m using CSS generated content to add a glyph to a tag using :after to add more meaning, say a check mark for a list of features, or an arrow to a next link. Most times, I’ll find a glyph using Jesse Gardner’s fantastic SymbolAssist or by simply pressing Command-Option-T ⌘⌥T on my Mac to pull up the characters palette.
