H.264/AVC is "the right thing" for Mozilla's Mission - Asa Dotzler: Firefox and more
If not supporting H.264 isn't reducing H.264 usage, but reduces the influence of Firefox by turning users away from Firefox, and increases the usage of Flash vs HTML5 video, then not supporting H.264 is a net lose for freedom and standards on the Web and supporting H.264 is the right thing to do for our mission.

ginger's thoughts » Jumping to time offsets in HTML5 video
For many years now I have been progressing a deeper view of video on the Web than just as a binary blob. We need direct access to time offsets and sections of videos.

Such direct access can be achieved either by providing a javascript interface through which a video’s playback position can be controlled, or by using URLs that directly communicate with the Web server about controlling the playback position. I will explain the approaches that can be applied on the HTML5 <video> tag for such deep video interaction.

Syncing Content With HTML5 Video - Smashing Magazine
Today we looked at how to embed video onto a Web document; and with the native video API that gives us event handlers for changes in a video, we saw how easy it is to make the video interact with the rest of the document. Instead of trying to control the video, we use native controls to make the page react to what is happening in the video itself. We used semantic HTML and data attributes to allow maintainers to use the syncing script without having to touch any JavaScript, and we looked at some services that make hosting and converting video easy.

Diary Of An x264 Developer » The first in-depth technical analysis of VP8
Overall, VP8 appears to be significantly weaker than H.264 compression-wise. The primary weaknesses mentioned above are the lack of proper adaptive quantization, lack of B-frames, lack of an 8×8 transform, and non-adaptive loop filter. With this in mind, I expect VP8 to be more comparable to VC-1 or H.264 Baseline Profile than with H.264. Of course, this is still significantly better than Theora, and in my tests it beats Dirac quite handily as well.

Op-Ed Contributor - Free viral videos - NYTimes.com
In these tight times, it’s no surprise that EMI is trying to wring revenue out of everything we make, including our videos. But it needs to recognize the basic mechanics of the Internet. Curbing the viral spread of videos isn’t benefiting the company’s bottom line, or the music it’s there to support. The sooner record companies realize this, the better — though I fear it may already be too late.

The project is an exciting journey for the imagination, tempting us with an approaching era where prosthetic components surpass the capabilities of natural human body parts. More importantly the project joins a series of recent examples that challenge us to contemplate a world where 24/7 surveillance of everything around us is not only possible, but common.
