Creating the Windows 8 user experience - Building Windows 8 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs
I thought it would be useful to take a step back and describe a little bit of the background of how the Windows 8 user interface was designed, and discuss some of the decisions we’ve made and the goals of this new experience in more detail. [Jensen Harris, Director of Program Management for our User Experience team, authored this post.]

What are some great examples of a "forgot password" UX pattern? - Quora
Before tackling the scenario myself, I thought I'd put the question out there. What's acceptable/common? Who's doing it well?

Infographic: buying DVDs vs pirating them - Boing Boing
This pithy and funny chart does a superb job of explaining how the insertion of a lot of "business model" (FBI warnings, unskippable trailers, THX vanity sequences) makes buying a DVD a lot worse than pirating the same disc online.

Structure First. Content Always. | Mark Boulton
Let’s be really clear about this. It is unrealistic to write your content – or ask your client to write the content – before you design it. Most of the time. Content needs to be structured and structuring alters your content, designing alters content. It’s not ‘content then design’, or ‘content or design’. It’s ‘content and design’.

Local maxima and the perils of data-driven design
At UX Week 2010, Facebook Product Designer Adam Mosseri gave a presentation called Data Informed, Not Data Driven. It’s an excellent talk and Adam gave some really good examples demonstrating how data-driven design can take you into “local maximum”, which is essentially a design cul-de-sac caused by a blinkered over-emphasis on Analytics and MVT.

Google Currents - Yet another contribution to the UI-fragmentation of Android - MIN MING
Google, here is the problem: If you cannot make the UI of your apps consistent, how do you expect developers to follow your design language? Which one should they follow? You have to set the bar high. You have to show what a good app is supposed to be like.

Don Norman's jnd.org / Simplicity Is Highly Overrated
“Why can’t products be simpler?” cries the reviewer in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the local newspaper. “We want simplicity” cry the people befuddled by all the features of their latest whatever. Do they really mean it? No.

More often than not, the mobile experience for a Web application or site is designed and built after the PC version is complete. Here's three reasons why Web applications should be designed for mobile first instead.

Don Norman's jnd.org / Why is 37signals so arrogant?
"I'm not designing for other people." I think that simple phrase speaks volumes. Thank goodness most companies recognize that this attitude is deadly.

Couldn't agree more with Don Norman. Often thought so myself. /via : Why is 37signals so arrogant?

The pollution of UX : Cennydd Bowles on user experience
The UX industry is becoming polluted by dilettantism. It’s no surprise then that people are attacking the field. We can expect more of it, and there’s a real chance that the fury and division we see in the conversation surrounding Ryan’s post will soon drown out the cause we espouse—designing technology that helps people be productive, empowered, and happy.

iPad User Experience Guidelines | UX Magazine
Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for the iPad outline how to create user interfaces optimized for the iPad device. According to Apple, the best iPad applications: downplay application UI so that the focus is on content; present content in beautiful, often realistic ways; and take full advantage of device capabilities to enable enhanced interaction.

The cathedral plus the bazaar: Open source and Apple (design) envy | The Open Road - CNET News
Walk the halls of any open-source conference and you'll see a large percentage of attendees with ironically un-open-source Apple laptops and iPhones. I've commented on the reasons for this before, but a new thought sprung to mind while reading Matthew Thomas' excellent (and old) "Why free software usability tends to suck."

Aza’s Thoughts » Blog Archive » Vote! How to Detect the Social Sites Your Visitors Use
If you could detect which social bookmarking sites your reader uses, on a per-reader basis, you could display only the badges they care about. But you can’t know that because the browser secures the user’s history, right? Wrong.
