Travel Gear for the Globe Trotting Geeks
65,000 km a month is my current travel routine with my international engineering firm, Spec Ops Technology. In my past there was formidable travel, but it always was within the continental US which removed some of the complexities in life. With the crossing of borders the type of equipment you need changes dramatically. Below are some of my favorite items to carry that have saved me numerous times. In a later post I will cover the software and mobile applications that I use on all this stuff.

About Nerdy Day Trip | Nerdy Day Trips| #nerdydaytrips
I am a very big fan of nerdy day trips, from Sea Forts to abandoned nuclear bunkers, dead victorian racecourses, roads that are falling into the ground, narrow gauge railways that take you to a power station, wherever. I like decaying infrastructure, terrifying modernity, and enthusiast-run museums with 6 pages of small-font text explaining every exhibit (looking at you, Bletchley Park).

What do users do on travel websites? | Econsultancy
We asked several users to test two of the UK’s largest travel companies’ websites: Thomas Cook and Thomson, to look for a suitable family holiday, and we reviewed the videos of their tests and analysed the results.

The findings list behaviours that travel websites should not seek to mitigate but rather that their designs, back end databases and content should actively seek to support.

The Tragedy of Nepal 2011 | Andrew Hyde
A deep depression hit me about an hour into my visit to Nepal and lasted for the first two weeks. Nepal, as a travel destination, is nothing short of raved about. “The Himalayan Mountains are majestic and the people are the nicest in the world!” was a common travel tidbit I heard. What I found was a developing nation with deep problems becoming worse by the month with tourism hastening the poisoning of the well. The pollution is the worst I have ever seen. Air, land, sound and water, nothing is spared the careless trash. The people are wonderful and also skillful about exploiting the tourist scene. Everyone you meet has a friend that is in the business of what you want to do, and they have a vested commission in getting you to open up.
