january 2012 by fjordaan
Twitter is rotten with spambots. But just how many of a person's followers are frauds? We counted our own one-by-one to find out.

Antique Spam | Futility Closet
november 2011 by fjordaan
Martha Turner didn’t exist. Her appeal was contrived and arranged by Joseph Underwood, one of about 250 letter-writing impostors who plagued England’s wealthy in the 1830s. Underwood had invented and written Martha’s letter in a woman’s hand, and he forged corroborating messages from her supposed seducer and from a clergyman supporting her story.

Why You Should Never Search For Free WordPress Themes in Google or Anywhere Else | WordPress, Multisite and BuddyPress plugins, themes, news and help – WPMU.org
january 2011 by fjordaan
A few months ago I wrote about WordPress Security. Now, armed only with the words “free WordPress themes,” builtBackwards’ Theme Authenticity Checker Plugin and Donncha O Caoimh’s Exploit Scanner, I’m going to take a look through the first page of Google to see just how safe pages ranking for “Free WordPress Themes” are.

Marco.org - Google's decreasingly useful, spam-filled web search
january 2011 by fjordaan
I’ve been frustrated as well by Google’s apparent defeat by spam. It’s not a sudden issue — it’s been gradually worsening for a few years. When I ask Google for something, it’s usually from these types of queries:

Three's a Trend: The Decline of Google Search Quality - Anil Dash
january 2011 by fjordaan
Now, is all this anecdotal evidence reliable? Perhaps not. What is worth noting now is that, half a decade after so many people began unquestioningly modifying their sites to serve Google's needs better, there may start to be enough critical mass for the pendulum to swing back to earlier days, when Google modified its workings to suit the web's existing behaviors.

How to Diagnose and Remove the WordPress Pharma Hack
october 2010 by fjordaan
The WordPress pharma hack quietly exploits your highest-ranking and most valuable pages by overriding the title tag and by inserting spammy links into the page content. Interestingly, the modified title tag and spammy links are only visible to search engines.

The Google Sewage Factory, In Action: The Chocomize Story
august 2010 by fjordaan
Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt has quite famously been on record many times talking about how the web is full of garbage. It’s a cesspool out there, he’s said. Today, a short fast look at how his own company pollutes the web.

Dr. Laura, Associated Content and the Googledammerung — Scott Rosenberg's Wordyard
august 2010 by fjordaan
But the writer of Associated Content’s Dr. Laura post is bypassing such unprofitable concerns. He chooses his words to please neither himself nor his readers. They’re strictly for Google’s algorithm. The algorithm is supposed to be able to see through this sort of manipulation, to spit out the worthless gruel so it can serve its human users something more savory. But it looks like the algorithm has lost its sense of taste.

Dishwashers, and How Google Eats Its Own Tail
january 2010 by fjordaan
Over the weekend I tried to buy a new dishwasher. Being the fine net-friendly fellow that I am, I began Google-ing for information. And Google-ing. and Google-ing. As I tweeted frustratedly at the tend of the failed exercise, "To a first approximation, the entire web is spam when it comes to appliance reviews".

Markov chain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
january 2009 by fjordaan
Markov processes can also be used to generate superficially "real-looking" text given a sample document: they are used in a variety of recreational "parody generator" software. These processes are also used by spammers to inject real-looking hidden paragraphs into unsolicited email in an attempt to get these messages past spam filters.

Email Blacklist Check - See if your server is blacklisted
december 2007 by fjordaan
This test will check a mail server IP address against 147 DNS based email blacklists. (Commonly called Realtime blacklist, DNSBL or RBL). If your mail server has been blacklisted, some email you send may not be delivered. Email blacklists are a common way of reducing spam. If you don't know your mail server's address, start with a MX Lookup.
