McSweeney's Internet Tendency: Review: The Mead Spiral 100 College-Ruled Notebook.
may 2011 by fjordaan
Releasing the same month as the iPad 2, Mead has taken a big risk with its new 100 Notebook series. Built around a minimal feature set and a low price point, the company is banking that the robust word-processing capabilities and ultraportable design will offer an appealing alternative to the latest tablets and netbooks. Buzz about the Mead 100 has been circulating in the tech blogosphere for months, but with such high expectations, can the notebook deliver?

Rango Film Review | The Film Pilgrim
march 2011 by fjordaan
From its first moments it’s clear Rango is going to be an intelligent ride. A Greek Chorus of a Mexican owl quartet sing about the lead character’s inevitable death; a long one-man play complete with script notes self-parodying the film’s premise, a slow-motion, and highly metaphorical, shattering of glass on concrete; a ridiculously sophisticated literary reference; an afterlife dream sequence; and an grotesquely injured armadillo offering spiritual advice about crossing the road – and we’re not even a reel in.

Thinking About Security : Microsoft’s Many Eyeballs and the Security Development Lifecycle

Hope is not a security strategy. By contrast, the Security Development Lifecycle is a proven strategy. The many eyeballs argument is neat, tidy, compelling, and wrong.

The Ghibli Blog: 15 More Observations About Ponyo
february 2010 by fjordaan
Today, I made the trek up to the Edina Lagoon Theatre for my third viewing of Ponyo. When I finally hiked my way back, I thought I'd write my latest impressions down. I also decided to finally sit down and watch the Japanese DVD with subtitles. Not a bad way to wind up the weekend when you're tired out.

becoming the alien: apartheid, racism and district 9 « a subtle knife
september 2009 by fjordaan
Well, I’ve been to see it and I personally think it is the best movie I have yet seen about South Africa – and specifically, one of the most pentetrating, disconcerting and subversive meditations on the nature of racism and repression in the post-colonial world.

Andy Ihnatko's Celestial Waste of Bandwidth (BETA) » Kindle: It’s About More Than Just Waffles.
october 2008 by fjordaan
It feels historic. The Kindle is almost certainly the first bona-fide Internet appliance. Buy someone a $399 Kindle and you buy them the Web, wherever they go, for life (well, so long as Amazon never cancels or changes the service).

James Galvin » Blog Archive » Forkd - A Site for Sharing Recipes
march 2008 by fjordaan
I visited Forkd today after seeing some a review on TechCrunch UK (& Ireland). It is basically a social network for sharing recipes. Coincidentally, I had just been looking for a good recipe site with user-generated content. I’m sure there are plenty of websites doing this same thing, but Forkd has a really cool vibe.
