This one time in Edo Japan, Bashō got together with a bunch of his rich friends from Nagoya to make up a set of interlocking poems (renku) — 36 of them, to be exact (a format called kasen). Then, 320 years later, the complete cycle was animated by a diverse international team of artists.

IPad Makes Space in Japan's Tiny Homes by Removing Bookshelves - Bloomberg

Ohki and rivals including Denshika.com and Scan Honpo are tapping that demand. Ohki founded Bookscan with childhood friend Shinya Iwamatsu in April, converting books into PDF files that can be read on the iPad, iPhone, Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble Inc.’s Nook. The company charges 100 yen per book for a service called “jisui,” or “cooking for oneself.”

Kumiko latticework is a traditional architectural fixture used in sliding shoji screens, standalone room dividers called shoin-shoji, and transom windows called ranma. The use of good kumiko is a sign of taste, refinement, and luxury. Thousands of precisely cut, tiny pieces of wood are assembled to create intricate screens. Kumiko originated about 350 years ago, in the Kanuma region of Tochigi prefecture. Shinji Yoshiwara is a kumiko craftsman of the old order, whose tales are filled with the breathtaking rollercoaster atmosphere of Japan’s postwar economic miracle.

Typographic town logos in hiragana/katakana ::: Pink Tentacle

Japanese town logos — official symbols designed to communicate the identity of each municipality — come in a vast array of shapes and colors. Many of these municipal symbols incorporate typographical elements (particularly kanji, hiragana, katakana, and Roman letters) into their designs. In most cases, the stylized characters are straightforward and easy to spot (even if you don’t read Japanese), but sometimes you have to bend your eyes to see them. The more complex logos encode the name of the town into a puzzle-like symbol that begs to be deciphered. Here are a few typographic town logos that make clever use of hiragana and katakana characters.

Mr. Kumada is known in Japan as a pioneer of botanical art, and he continues his busy career to this day. We spoke to him this week about his thoughts and experiences.
