The lessons I learnt from my iPhone mugging | Benjamin Cohen on Technology
Yesterday, I had one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life when I was mugged at knife point in broad daylight just metres from my front door. But I learnt a lot about how I could have allowed the police to better respond to a crime like this, and the actions that I needed to take to ensure my data was safe.

Stealing Your Address Book by Dustin Curtis
I can't think of a rational reason for why Apple has not placed any protections on Address Book in iOS. It makes no sense. It is a breach of my privacy, and it has allowed every app I've installed to steal my address book.

Did Android Really Look Like BlackBerry Before the iPhone?
To answer the question posed in the headline: yes, a prototype Android device looked like a BlackBerry phone. However, at least one other prototype Android device from the same time frame did not (and it wouldn't surprise me if Google was testing Android on several more prototypes with different form factors). On top of that, the SDK from that exact same time frame also included support for large touch screens. In other words, the argument is invalid.

An explanation of the CSS animation on Apple's iPhone 4S webpage -- John B. Hall
The "phone stage" (blue-bordered box) contains all 6 "slides" of the animation sequence and has a transition css property with a duration and timing function (a cubic bezier curve). For the phone stage to cycle from one slide to the next, its css transform property is updated with new translate and rotate values. At the end of the cycle, the phone stage's transition duration is temporarily set to 0ms while slide 6 resets to slide 1.

Your company? There's an app for that.
Few technology and device-making companies probably realize it, but they are in direct competition with Apple (or soon will be). How did this happen? Well, the iPhone1 does a lot of useful things pretty well, well enough that it is replacing several specialized devices that do one or two things really well. Space in backpacks, pockets, and purses is a finite resource, as is money (obviously). As a result, many are opting to carry only the iPhone with them when they might have toted several devices around. Here is a short list of devices with capabilities duplicated to some degree by the iPhone:

HOWTO: Native iPhone/iPad apps in JavaScript
In this article, I'll explain how to:

* strip away the browser chrome (the url bar and button bar);
* prevent viewport scrolling and scaling;
* respond to multi-touch and gesture events;
* use webkit CSS to get the iPhone OS look and feel;
* cache the app so it runs without internet access;
* get a custom icon on the home screen; and
* have a splash screen load at the start.

How To Make Your iPhone App Launch Faster « Three Letter Acronym
In any case, I think this technique of saving an image on quit and displaying that while your true initialisation happens really helps in making your application feel faster to launch. If your initialisation doesn’t take very long, you can probably skip showing any kind of loading dialog on top of it, even on a slower device.

Idea to Market in 5 Months: Making the Glif - The Russians Used a Pencil
On July 11th, 2010, Tom Gerhardt and I had an idea for an iPhone accessory: a tripod mount that doubled as a stand. Five months later, customers began to receive our product, the Glif, in the mail. This turnaround, from idea to market in five months by two guys with no retail or manufacturing experience, signifies a shift in the way products are made and sold — a shift only made possible in the last couple years.

ignore the code » Virtual Keyboards on iPhone and Android
A virtual keyboard lives and dies by the details. It’s not that there’s a single feature which makes the iPhone’s virtual keyboard better than Android’s; it’s death by a thousand cuts. A number of small differences end up making a huge difference.8 Apple obviously spent a lot of time getting every little detail just right (well, except for the ducking dictionary), while Google decided to go ahead with what they had – which is usable, but no match for what the iPhone offers. I have no doubt that Android’s virtual keyboard will be improved in the future, and I’m looking forward to what they will come up with.

Whither Eucalyptus? - Jamie’s Web Log
If you’re wondering why Eucalyptus is not yet available, it’s currently in the state of being ‘rejected’ for distribution on the iPhone App Store. This is due to the fact that it’s possible, after explicitly searching for them, to find, download from the Internet, and then read texts that Apple deems ‘objectionable’. The example they have given me is a Victorian text-only translation of the Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana. For the full background, a log of my communications with Apple is below.

A Spate of Excellent Photo Apps for the iPhone - O'Reilly Broadcast
Photography on the iPhone can be more than just snapping 2-megapixel pictures. You can also process and transfer the images from the same device that you used to record. For this to work reasonable well, you need a basic set of tools that allow you to edit and output the pictures. Things like cropping and image enhancement are vital. But other conveniences, such as an easy Flickr interface or means to send the image to a printer on your network are useful too. Here's a list of iPhone photography apps that I've tested with mini reviews about each. They provide a good foundation for your photo work on "the camera you always have with you."
