What Apple needs to do now « Adam Greenfield’s Speedbird
june 2010 by fjordaan
I’m talking about the persistent skeuomorphic design cues that spoor applications like Calendar, Compass, iBooks and the truly awful Notes. The iPhone and iPad, as I argued on the launch of the original in 2007, are history’s first full-fledged everyware devices — post-PC interface devices of enormous power and grace — and here somebody in Apple’s UX shop has saddled them with the most awful and mawkish and flat-out tacky visual cues. You can credibly accuse Cupertino of any number of sins over the course of the last thirty years, but tackiness has not ordinarily numbered among them.

may 2010 by fjordaan
We’ll start with “window indicators”, or “windicators” for fun. Windicators are indicators displayed in the window title bar that behave just like the indicators in the panel: they have an icon which shows state, and clicking on the icon brings up a menu. Applications can create, update and remove window indicators using an API more or less like the AppIndicator framework first put to use in 10.04 LTS.

Back-of-device touch input can enable pointing input on very small screens. This enables building new types of devices, such as touch-capable electronic jewelry. Here are four of the back-of-device designs we envision (a) pendant, (b) clip-on (b) watch, and (b) ring. Screen diagonals range from 2.5" to less than half an inch.

Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Windows
may 2009 by fjordaan
An item that provides click-through is one that a user can activate on an inactive window with one click, instead of clicking first to make the window active and then clicking the item. Click-through provides greater efficiency in performing such tasks as closing or resizing inactive windows, and copying or moving files. In many cases, however, click-through could confuse a user who clicks an item unintentionally.

Users Fix Parking Ticket Machine Interface Themselves - uselog.com | the product usability weblog
march 2009 by fjordaan
And once again it's a parking ticket machine that drives users nuts (see another one here). And this time to the extent that they've taken their fate into their own hands and added some 'customized' labels to the device. I think we can add parking ticket machines to the category of 'things that always suck', that also includes office telephones and presentation equipment in meeting rooms. I do hope that the designers saw the 'modification' that users made, because it shows them that really anyone can make a better design than they did...
