Anatomy of a mobile web experience: google.com | mobiForge
6 weeks ago by fjordaan
In a recent blog post that I did here on mobiForge (Server-side device detection used by 82% of Alexa top 100 sites) some people expressed surprise that a 47 byte difference in the HTML payload delivered by Google to different devices constituted a significant level of server-side adaptation. On checking my results, it turned out that this minor 47 byte file size difference actually masks an entirely different HTML document served to different devices—an approach that Google use extensively in its mobile presences.

Hyphenation on the web (Phil Gyford’s website)
june 2011 by fjordaan
I spent a while this week looking into how best to automatically hyphenate text on websites, to improve Today’s Guardian. I couldn’t find anything recent that summarised the options, so here’s a quick run-down of what I discovered. If you know any more, or any better, please do correct me.

july 2009 by fjordaan
WMD is a simple, lightweight HTML editor for blog comments, forum posts, and basic content management. You can add WMD to any textarea with one line of code. Add live preview with one line more. WMD works in nearly all modern browsers, and is now completely free to use. This is not a WYSIWYG editor. So WMD is something new: a Wysiwym Markdown editor.

Use Lowercase Markup For Better Compression - avoid uppercase markup to improve xhtml and html compression
november 2008 by fjordaan
Lowercase markup compresses more efficiently than uppercase markup. Along with the benefits of XHTML compatibility, lowercase markup allows HTTP compression to work more efficiently by increasing redundancy. In this article we show the benefits of using lowercase markup on five popular sites.

Juicy Studio: Jargon Busting with the Definition Element
april 2008 by fjordaan
The definition element (dfn) is used to denote the defining instance of a term, and is ideal for marking up idioms and jargon, as well as any other words or phrases that may not be immediately understood by the intended audience. The definition element has been available since HTML 3.2, and is supported by all modern user agents.
