Art in the Age of Commerce: The Mona Lisa Curse | Brain Pickings
march 2011 by fjordaan
In The Mona Lisa Curse, an ambitious documentary available on YouTube in 12 installments, Hughes — curmudgeonly and keenly insightful as ever — traces the evolution of the art world’s devolution. From archival footage of Hughes, once a suave TIME critic, in his 1960′s prime to insider accounts of some of the greatest art events and deals of today, the series is as much an exemplar of investigative journalism as it is an absorbing and eye-opening piece of cultural storytelling.

Our Desperate, 250-Year-Long Search for a Gender-Neutral Pronoun | The Awl
january 2011 by fjordaan
All of which brings us to the backstory of the Fourteenth Amendment, and to the thorny history of gender-neutral language in English. Prescriptive grammarians have been calling for "he" as the gender-neutral pronoun of choice since at least 1745, when a British schoolmistress named Anne Fisher laid down the law in A New Grammar.

History Pin: Overlaying Google Street View with Historical Photos - information aesthetics
july 2010 by fjordaan
History Pin [historypin.com] hopes to become the largest user-generated archive of the world's historical images and stories. The website acts like a digital time machine, and uses Google Maps and Street View technology to allow the wide public to dig out, upload and pin their own old photos, as well as the stories behind them, onto an interactive map. Uniquely, Historypin lets people layer old images onto modern Street View scenes, providing a series of geo-located time tunnel views into the past.

Lee Byron » What » Listening History
july 2009 by fjordaan
The result is a printed poster, generated using Processing. The poster shows the changing trends in listening history by showing a stacked graph of all musicians that user has listened to over time, and their changing interest in the eyes of that user. The poster is a sort of virtual mirror, reflecting very personally significant events made visible by the changes in listening trends.

Dan Carlin - Common Sense
november 2008 by fjordaan
In "Hardcore History" the very unconventional Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", outside-the-box way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This is a difficult-to-classify show that has a rather sharp edge. It's not for everyone. But the innovative style and approach has made "Dan Carlin's Hardcore History" a New Media hit.

Milliways: Infocom's Unreleased Sequel to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Waxy.org
april 2008 by fjordaan
From an anonymous source close to the company, I've found myself in possession of the "Infocom Drive" - a complete backup of Infocom's shared network drive from 1989. This is one of the most amazing archives I've ever seen, a treasure chest documenting the rise and fall of the legendary interactive fiction game company. Among the assets included: design documents, email archives, employee phone numbers, sales figures, internal meeting notes, corporate newsletters, and the source code and game files for every released and unreleased game Infocom made.
