Enormously moving speech on the way the Internet transforms lives - Boing Boing
june 2011 by fjordaan
one talk, by Jim Gilliam's "The Internet is My Religion," brought the house down. Jim worked in many early and influential Internet firms, went on to produce Robert Greenwald's extraordinary films, and do many other notable things. Among them was surviving two bouts of cancer and a double-lung transplant. The story of how he went from a Jerry Falwell born-again to an Internet advocate and film producer ended with a standing ovation and not a dry eye in the house. Watch this, please, I'd consider it a favor

The ethical case against eating animal produce once seemed clear. But a new book is an abattoir for dodgy arguments

Alex Payne — Staying Healthy and Sane At a Startup
september 2010 by fjordaan
Here’s what I’ve been doing–or at least trying to do–to stay healthy and sane while working on a startup. It’s not rocket science. It may work for you, and it may not. But these strategies have been helpful for me, so I thought I’d share, in hopes that others have an easier time of it.

july 2010 by fjordaan
Finding the right balance between individual privacy rights and community benefit will, however, require online services to thread regulatory needles and provide clear guidance to users about how their information will be used. World Affairs Journal - Drunken Nation: Russia’s Depopulation Bomb
april 2009 by fjordaan
A specter is haunting Russia today. It is not the specter of Communism-that ghost has been chained in the attic of the past-but rather of depopulation-a relentless, unremitting, and perhaps unstoppable depopulation. The mass deaths associated with the Communist era may be history, but another sort of mass death may have only just begun, as Russians practice what amounts to an ethnic self-cleansing.
