Fantastic Creative Mornings talk on how the Internet changed everything by Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield – insightful far past what you’d expect. Be sure to stick around for the excellent Q&A portion at the end, which gives the actual talk a run for its money. (via)

Yahoo! Acquisitions: Why did the web services group at Yahoo fail after acquiring Flickr, Delicious, Upcoming, MyBlogLog and others? - Quora

These acquisitions were supposed to re-vitalize Yahoo. Lots of smart people and a solid acquisition streak. Why did it end up having such little impact?

timoni.org - The most important page on Flickr
june 2011 by fjordaan
Virtually every time someone asks if I’ve seen a new photo on Flickr, I first cringe a bit, then reluctantly say no—it’s always no, because the page dedicated to showing new photos on Flickr, Contacts > Uploads, makes it impossible to easily browse those new photos.

Thomas Hawk Digital Connection » Blog Archive » An Open Letter to Carol Bartz, CEO Yahoo Inc.
january 2011 by fjordaan
I just finished reading your demoralizing letter regarding recent layoffs at Yahoo over at All Things Digital. Although I’m only a Yahoo user, not an employee, I am a heavy user of your Flickr product — a product that I’ve enjoyed and loved for many years now. As such, I watch how Yahoo is run with keen interest, mostly because I’m worried about how your corporate leadership will affect that site which I love so much.

Flickr: Discussing CHDK Now Available for S90 in Canon PowerShot S90
may 2010 by fjordaan
The CHDK firmware hack for Canon cameras has just been ported to the S90. It's still in beta with a few rough edges, but most features are working. Since it boots off the SD card and not a firmware flash, it's totally reversible. Here are some things it adds to the S90:

A Spate of Excellent Photo Apps for the iPhone - O'Reilly Broadcast
april 2009 by fjordaan
Photography on the iPhone can be more than just snapping 2-megapixel pictures. You can also process and transfer the images from the same device that you used to record. For this to work reasonable well, you need a basic set of tools that allow you to edit and output the pictures. Things like cropping and image enhancement are vital. But other conveniences, such as an easy Flickr interface or means to send the image to a printer on your network are useful too. Here's a list of iPhone photography apps that I've tested with mini reviews about each. They provide a good foundation for your photo work on "the camera you always have with you."

Two great new image related sites I’m enjoying that play with the Flickr API. First up is Multicolr Search Lab by Idée Inc who build an image montage from a colour palette you select from. Next up is Compfight who do something similar to Flickrleech though not as well in my opinion.

Code: Flickr Developer Blog » Location, keeping it real on the streets, yo!
november 2008 by fjordaan
Or something like that anyway. Over on the artsy Flickr Blog we Introduce a new way to geotag, which has a nice pop-up map, which you can drag around, or just enter in the latitude/longitude by hand, something amazingly you couldn’t just do before. However, ‘ere on the Dev blog there’s something else that interests us about this. A thing we call "Corrections" and it’s tucked down at the bottom when you go edit a photo’s location …

Flickr boundaries, now free to play with » Blog » tomtaylor.co.uk
november 2008 by fjordaan
I finished off the little tool that I used to generate yesterday’s map of Homerton and its neighbours’ boundaries, sourced from Flickr’s shapefiles. It’s called, rather boringly, Boundaries, and it’s available for you to poke. It’s pretty simple. You throw in a place name and it’ll attempt to find that place’s neighbours, using Yahoo GeoPlanet. For each of those neighbours, it uses the WOE ID to fetch and render the polygon from shapefile that Flickr returns.

Nasty as they wanna be? Policing Flickr.com
september 2008 by fjordaan
Director of Community Heather Champ doesn't just guard the pool and blow the occasional whistle; it's a far more delicate, and revealing, dance that keeps the user population here happy, healthy and growing. In addressing that question of how much to police and how much to let things be, Champ oversees an experiment that, outside some far-flung and sandy exceptions, one rarely sees in such detail.

WatchMouse web site monitoring service - Social networking sites slow and inaccessible
january 2008 by fjordaan
In recent research, WatchMouse found that many of the world's largest online social networks have poor site performance, leaving users waiting for sites to load or encountering errors. Of the 104 sites monitored, the immensely popular Facebook (facebook.com) site was the worst performer; recording a slow load time and more errors than any other monitored site.

[Mishoo] IE: Popularity theft
november 2007 by fjordaan
This new bug makes a fresh IE6 user (that is, one who didn't visit the bage before) generate much more server hits than one with any other browser would. Microsoft is not interested in the fact that users are wasting bandwidth, not in the fact that Web servers are wasting bandwidth; this is not their money. However Microsoft is interested in the fact that Web servers got 10 times more hits from Internet Explorer than they get from other browsers.
