H.264/AVC is "the right thing" for Mozilla's Mission - Asa Dotzler: Firefox and more
9 weeks ago by fjordaan
If not supporting H.264 isn't reducing H.264 usage, but reduces the influence of Firefox by turning users away from Firefox, and increases the usage of Flash vs HTML5 video, then not supporting H.264 is a net lose for freedom and standards on the Web and supporting H.264 is the right thing to do for our mission.

Adrian Roselli: The Return of “Best Viewed in…”
11 weeks ago by fjordaan
We have plenty of evidence to suggest that a browser monoculture is coming back, a repeat of the monoculture that we as developers created when we built for IE6 only, and now we rail against as if it's the user's fault.

Alex's blog: DOM Inspector as accessibility tool
february 2012 by fjordaan
When you need to understand why your web page or your ARIA widget has accessibility issues then it's quite handy to inspect both DOM and accessible trees and what's most important to see *relation* between elements of these trees. That's what DOMi gives you.

Critical Fixes for Shockwave, Firefox — Krebs on Security
november 2010 by fjordaan
I believe I whined about this earlier but still I’m so irritated I’m going to do it again. Where the hell do those [expletive deleted] at Adobe get off trying to get paid while patching their garbage software? How could they think it’s appropriate to hoist pay-per-install toolbars and trash onto the backs of these critical updates.

Enable click-through on OS X • mozillaZine Forums
august 2010 by fjordaan
Safari enables click-through on its entire toolbar (buttons, tabs, address and search fields), reinforced by subtle mouseover cues. So does Chrome. (The content area does not click-through.) I'd like Firefox to do the same.

july 2010 by fjordaan
Lack of click-through means a lot more mouse clicks while you're working. Subliminally, it can make the user experience feel slow and unresponsive. I've been using OS X for three years, and it's still one of my least favourite things about Macs.

The cathedral plus the bazaar: Open source and Apple (design) envy | The Open Road - CNET News
june 2009 by fjordaan
Walk the halls of any open-source conference and you'll see a large percentage of attendees with ironically un-open-source Apple laptops and iPhones. I've commented on the reasons for this before, but a new thought sprung to mind while reading Matthew Thomas' excellent (and old) "Why free software usability tends to suck."

XUL Apps > Tree Style Tab - outsider reflex
april 2009 by fjordaan
This provides tree-style tab bar, like a folder tree of Windows Explorer. New tabs opened from links (or etc.) are automatically attached to the parent tab. If you often use many many tabs, it will help your web browsing because you can understand relations of tabs.
