"An obscure world of celluloid intrigue" | MetaFilter
15 days ago by fjordaan
"At a time when most old films were still protected by copyright and studios were urging the FBI to prosecute individuals owning copyrighted films, movie collecting was a largely underground and somewhat dangerous activity." In 1977, for example, a 20 year old film collector was visited by the FBI. The agents, posing as fellow collectors, entered his home and seized his collection. His case wasn't unique. Even the stars — most famously, Roddy McDowall — were subject to the legal wrath of the very studios they worked for. Still, some collectors got away with it (including one J. D. Salinger).

CINEMETRICS
september 2011 by fjordaan
cinemetrics is about measuring and visualizing movie data, in order to reveal the characteristics of films and to create a visual “fingerprint” for them. Information such as the editing structure, color, speech or motion are extracted, analyzed and transformed into graphic representations so that movies can be seen as a whole and easily interpreted or compared side by side. read more ...

becoming the alien: apartheid, racism and district 9 « a subtle knife
april 2011 by fjordaan
Well, I’ve been to see it and I personally think it is the best movie I have yet seen about South Africa – and specifically, one of the most pentetrating, disconcerting and subversive meditations on the nature of racism and repression in the post-colonial world.

As my friend Liezel said, it’s not Woody Allen, is it? I know what she means. Not that Allen’s movies are particularly cool or cerebral these days anyway; and Emmerich knows there are plenty cruder, more clichéd films. But there are few movies on the commercial circuit that convey their clichés with such starry-eyed conviction, or where the stakes are quite as high.

Rango Film Review | The Film Pilgrim
march 2011 by fjordaan
From its first moments it’s clear Rango is going to be an intelligent ride. A Greek Chorus of a Mexican owl quartet sing about the lead character’s inevitable death; a long one-man play complete with script notes self-parodying the film’s premise, a slow-motion, and highly metaphorical, shattering of glass on concrete; a ridiculously sophisticated literary reference; an afterlife dream sequence; and an grotesquely injured armadillo offering spiritual advice about crossing the road – and we’re not even a reel in.

Open Subtitles
october 2009 by fjordaan
The open subtitle market today is focused on popular films and TV shows, but there is no reason why it won't eventually grow to support everything from last night's Jon Stewart show to a viral video on YouTube. As the tools get easier to create .srt files and the various video players start to support them, the possibilities are endless. And the world will get just a little bit smaller as a result.

Pixar doesn't care about Disney's investors
april 2009 by fjordaan
Disney investors are getting a little antsy with Pixar and their irritating need to make movies that are good without worrying about their commercial success or how many action figures of the main characters can be sold. Says Disney's CEO: We seek to make great films first. If a great film gives birth to a franchise, we are the first company to leverage such success. A check-the-boxes approach to creativity is more likely to result in blandness and failure.

Cartoon Brew: Leading the Animation Conversation » Little Nemo test film
april 2008 by fjordaan
The tortured history of the TMS feature film Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland (1992) could rival that of Richard Williams The Thief And The Cobbler. It was an American/Japanese joint project, with no less than Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata involved in the pre-production stage (1982-83).
