Graphing Calculator Story
10 weeks ago by fjordaan
Pacific Tech's Graphing Calculator has a long history. I began the work in 1985 while in school. That became Milo, and later became part of FrameMaker. Over the last twenty years, many people have contributed to it. Graphing Calculator 1.0, which Apple bundled with the original PowerPC computers, originated under unique circumstances. [...] I was frustrated by all the wasted effort, so I decided to uncancel my small part of the project. I had been paid to do a job, and I wanted to finish it. My electronic badge still opened Apple's doors, so I just kept showing up.

Apple Never Designed the iPad - They Undesigned it (by @baekdal) #opinion
december 2011 by fjordaan
Samsung is saying that there is no other way to design a tablet, and they are right. They could have used different materials, but the overall shape is not Apple's design. As I demonstrated in this article, the shape of an iPad is the logic progression of simplicity itself.

An explanation of the CSS animation on Apple's iPhone 4S webpage -- John B. Hall
november 2011 by fjordaan
The "phone stage" (blue-bordered box) contains all 6 "slides" of the animation sequence and has a transition css property with a duration and timing function (a cubic bezier curve). For the phone stage to cycle from one slide to the next, its css transform property is updated with new translate and rotate values. At the end of the cycle, the phone stage's transition duration is temporarily set to 0ms while slide 6 resets to slide 1.

How Apple won the ebook pricing war by strong-arming Amazon - The Next Web
october 2011 by fjordaan
Jobs thought that Amazon had “screwed up” in that it was paying wholesale price for some books from publishers but selling them below cost. The publishers hated this and had started to hold some books back from the ebook model because of it.
Jobs solution was ruthless and brilliant. He told the publishers that Apple would “go to the agency model, where you set the price, and we get our 30%, and yes, the customer pays a little more, but that’s what you want anyway.”

Apple Campus 2 – The Size of a Town but Doesn’t Work as One « Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
august 2011 by fjordaan
Its dysfunctional as a town, which is what something of this scale should be judged as. Over four thousand parking spaces would be several hundred metres from the main building. Once you get to the main building its several hundred metres to walk to the other side if you work there. And you can’t even walk in the desired line, you have to walk around a big circle. If you work opposite the cafeteria you lose 20 minutes of your lunch hour walking there and back, and the rest queuing.

Your company? There's an app for that.
april 2011 by fjordaan
Few technology and device-making companies probably realize it, but they are in direct competition with Apple (or soon will be). How did this happen? Well, the iPhone1 does a lot of useful things pretty well, well enough that it is replacing several specialized devices that do one or two things really well. Space in backpacks, pockets, and purses is a finite resource, as is money (obviously). As a result, many are opting to carry only the iPhone with them when they might have toted several devices around. Here is a short list of devices with capabilities duplicated to some degree by the iPhone:

Liquifile is a file management alternative for Mac OS X. It is designed for visual thinkers who want to get a bigger picture of their files and feel them more directly. But not only for them ;-). Did you ever wonder why searching and browsing is so separated in today's interfaces? Ever wished you had a bigger screen when finding or organizing your files? Ever lost files in deep hierarchical structures? Ever wondered what the next big thing in file browsing might be...? Well, maybe you should have a look at this:

What Apple needs to do now « Adam Greenfield’s Speedbird
june 2010 by fjordaan
I’m talking about the persistent skeuomorphic design cues that spoor applications like Calendar, Compass, iBooks and the truly awful Notes. The iPhone and iPad, as I argued on the launch of the original in 2007, are history’s first full-fledged everyware devices — post-PC interface devices of enormous power and grace — and here somebody in Apple’s UX shop has saddled them with the most awful and mawkish and flat-out tacky visual cues. You can credibly accuse Cupertino of any number of sins over the course of the last thirty years, but tackiness has not ordinarily numbered among them.

Coding Horror: Double-Click Must Die
april 2010 by fjordaan
I don't blame the user here. Double-click has always been a bad idea. It was basically forced on the industry by Apple Computer when they elected to use a single button mouse on the original Mac in 1984. Technically, double-click is an optional shortcut for clicking an object and then clicking the File, Open menu; it's how you distinguish between selection (pick this one) and action (launch this one). I have some problems with double-click:

Whither Eucalyptus? - Jamie’s Web Log
may 2009 by fjordaan
If you’re wondering why Eucalyptus is not yet available, it’s currently in the state of being ‘rejected’ for distribution on the iPhone App Store. This is due to the fact that it’s possible, after explicitly searching for them, to find, download from the Internet, and then read texts that Apple deems ‘objectionable’. The example they have given me is a Victorian text-only translation of the Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana. For the full background, a log of my communications with Apple is below.

Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Windows
may 2009 by fjordaan
An item that provides click-through is one that a user can activate on an inactive window with one click, instead of clicking first to make the window active and then clicking the item. Click-through provides greater efficiency in performing such tasks as closing or resizing inactive windows, and copying or moving files. In many cases, however, click-through could confuse a user who clicks an item unintentionally.

Apple - Support - Discussions - Why has my Mac mini become so slow? ...
january 2009 by fjordaan
In a word, it comes down to lag. Every operation which used to be instant when the Mac was new, now has a delay of anything from half a second to over 10 seconds. It feels like walking in mud. And it's always the first time I do something I haven't done for a few minutes -- if I repeat the same operation immediately afterwards, it's instant. Long delays are often (but not always) accompanied by the beachball -- which I see a lot.
