A List Apart: Articles: Application Cache is a Douchebag
15 days ago by fjordaan
At first, this can seem like a magic bullet to the problem. Unfortunately I was lying when I said this would be an easy introduction. The ApplicationCache spec is like an onion: it has many many layers, and as you peel through them you’ll be reduced to tears.

A List Apart: Articles: Making Compact Forms More Accessible
july 2011 by fjordaan
To maintain accessibility, each form element should have an associated label that identifies that element’s purpose. Despite its compact design, there’s no reason our form can’t meet this guideline.

Bibliotype: a template
We need a starting point. We know HTML is the future so why not build a core design template for long form tablet reading? With this in mind, I set out to build just that. The end result is called Bibliotype. It’s a simple set of CSS, HTML, and JS files that provide a base for anyone looking to bring long form reading to tablets (be it in a CMS, blog, iOS app—anything using WebKit as a renderer).

A List Apart, in Arabic: Q&A with the Creators
february 2010 by fjordaan
This week saw the launch of Arabic A List Apart, an official version of the standard-setting A List Apart Magazine, which has been exploring “the design, development, and meaning of web content” for more than a decade. Delighted by the announcement of the launch of the Arabic version—and intrigued by what it could mean for the future of Arabic web design and development—I asked if the creators could give us a little background on how the project came about and what to expect going forward.

A List Apart: Articles: Printing a Book with CSS: Boom!
september 2009 by fjordaan
Can CSS be used for serious print jobs? To find out, we decided to take the ultimate challenge: to produce the next edition of our book directly from HTML and CSS files. In this article we sketch our solution and quote from the style sheet used. Towards the end we describe the book microformat (boom!) we developed in the process.

Findings from the A LIST APART Survey, 2008
april 2009 by fjordaan
As we did in 2007, A List Apart and you teamed up to shed light on precisely who creates websites. Where do we live? What kind of work do we do? What are our job titles? How well or how poorly are we paid? How satisfied are we, and where do we see ourselves going?

A List Apart: Articles: The Accessibility Hat Trick: Getting Abbreviations Right
april 2008 by fjordaan
abbreviations and acronyms stand out as one of the trickier areas of AAA to implement well. In order to meet our three-part goal of standards compliance, backwards compatibility, and full accessibility, we need to give this aspect of our content a bit of thought.
