The Trouble With Popularity - Blog – Stack Exchange
18 hours ago
Ironically, the Reddit community itself now recognizes that moderation is fundamental and essential: [...] This is as clear a call for active moderation as I’ve ever seen. And the moderators, to their credit, took charge and instituted changes to help guide their community away from the fatty junk food content:

Do You Like Online Privacy? You May Be a Terrorist | Public Intelligence
yesterday
A flyer designed by the FBI and the Department of Justice to promote suspicious activity reporting in internet cafes lists basic tools used for online privacy as potential signs of terrorist activity. The document, part of a program called “Communities Against Terrorism”, lists the use of “anonymizers, portals, or other means to shield IP address” as a sign that a person could be engaged in or supporting terrorist activity.

Literary Review - Richard Holloway on Religion for Atheists
yesterday
Religion is understood as an invention of the human imagination, a work of art through which we have found a way of talking about ourselves and our place in the universe. It is valued as poetry not science, myth not mathematics; and myth is understood to have an enduringly useful role in interpreting ourselves to ourselves.

EXCLUSIVE: The IM Conversation In Which 19-Year-Old Zuckerberg Decided To Build Facebook, This Year's $100 Billion IPO
2 days ago
We know this because back in college and in the year or so following, Mark Zuckerberg held lots of instant message conversations with friends and confidants about his plans for life and work. Due to a lawsuit or two, these instant messages were preserved. We have viewed some of them.

The MPAA studios hate us. They hate us with region locks and unskippable screens and encryption and criminalization of fair use. Yet when we watch their movies, we support them.

Dear Congress, It's No Longer OK To Not Know How The Internet Works | Motherboard
12 days ago
This used to be funny, but now it’s really just terrifying. We’re dealing with legislation that will completely change the face of the internet and free speech for years to come. Yet here we are, still at the mercy of underachieving Congressional know-nothings that have more in common with the slacker students sitting in the back of math class than elected representatives. The fact that some of the people charged with representing us must be dragged kicking and screaming out of their complacency on such matters is no longer endearing — it’s just pathetic and sad.

Real-Life Examples Of How Google's "Search Plus" Pushes Google+ Over Relevancy

The new Google “Search Plus Your World” feature — which I’m now simply calling “Search Plus” — has just gone live for me. Huge debate erupted yesterday over whether it somehow favors Google+. I can see now that it clearly does, even more than I thought. Here’s a closer look at the changes, including how they turn Google+ into an essential social network for any search marketer.
