macroblog: Labor force nonparticipants: So what are they doing?
Labor force participation is down with the recent recovery. What are these people doing? Looks like school (encouraging)

Evaluation of adherence to morning versus evening glaucoma medication dosing regimens
First off, n=41 (grain of salt)

Reminders were baked into an electronic dosage device.
AM routine missed fewer days, but that was through making up for it by taking meds at off-hours. I'm unsure of the gravity of this...seems better to take at the wrong hour than to miss a dose entirely.
Overall, adherence (if defined as taking the Rx at the right time) was the same between the two groups. If defines as taking the med on that day, morning was better.

Shocking #s about diarrhea: 30-50% of Indian mothers answer "Reduce" when asked how much water to give their child with diarrhea.

This is a great example about how intuition can be mistaken. Their mental model - don't put water in a leaky bucket - ignores crucial insights only gained by an understanding of biology

Breaching the body's defences: Getting past the guards | The Economist
Nanocapsules sound awesome - what a brilliant idea!

T-cell supression is awesome too, though a very curious mechanism.

Crossing the blood-brain barrier with an antibody? I thought the main thing was size?

A theory of fiscal policy: Self-sustaining stimulus | The Economist
Sounds crackpot to me.
The main problem is that one can't really ensure that stimulus will fix the hysteresis problem at all. Stimulus funds do not go 100% to hiring people that have been unemployed for 6+ months; in fact, many of the people hired are not unemployed at all (as Caplan demonstrated in his Mercatur report)

Costa Rica restructures health system to curb financial crisis : The Lancet
are for some 160 000 residents in Grecia and outlying communities. Yet the hospital was built for a population of only 60 000. “The hospital in Grecia has been around for many years without any type of upgrade”, said the city's mayor, Adrián Barquero. “We've witnessed a serious deterioration in the service our hospital provides. Now, in addition we're facing a budget shortage on a national scale.”
According to the doctors' union, placing more doctors on call and shifting doctors from daytime to night-time shifts without hiring more staff could delay some 850 patient visits per month

The Lantern Bearers
7 - Across the Plains - Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)

- Every man has a torch burning within
- We rarely see it. We see a simple exterior, and think that is all there is. How wrong we are!
- If we were just to penetrate to that which sets our fellow man afire, how much we might glory in man's beauty!
