Land Survey Information System - GeoCommunicator
november 2010 by fakeisthenewreal
"The Land Survey Information System is the official government Web site for the distribution of the Public Land Survey System of the United States. The Bureau of Land Management cadastral survey program is responsible for the official boundary surveys for all federal agencies in the U.S. that together manage over 700 million acres. The Public Land Survey System also called the Rectangular Survey System is the foundation for many survey-based land information systems."
You can "Download PLSS data in NAD 83 shape file format that can be used with GIS applications. & Export Survey points, Points/Lines, and Control Points in kml, gps, list, and GeoRSS formats. "

[Maphist] Thematic Maps?
june 2009 by fakeisthenewreal
Petchenik's "From Space to Place: The Psychological Achievement of Thematic Mapping" (American Cartographer 6, 12, 1979) reviews the English language literature and its attempts to define the "thematic map" and she finds all attempts problematic. She ends up arguing for a distinction "...there is the map whose meaning lies in the human experience of being-in-place" - the reference map. "...its meaning can be considered cognitively less complex." Compare to "the map whose meaning is experienced as knowing-about-space..." the thematic map. "It requires a more advanced stage of cognitive development in the spatial domain."

The Demon-Haunted World
february 2009 by fakeisthenewreal
woooo technology is going to make everything better and interconnected, and you will be able to walk by a bridge. Lots of good tidbits, but a depressingly shallow analysis of what goes into making cities tick. I'm not surprised that a Nokia employee thinks that outfitting cities with a(nother) new electronic infrastructure is a good idea. And getting novel information from unusual sources is undoubtably a Good Thing. But does it make cities more just/sustainable/beautiful?
