English Russia » Russian “Ecranoplanes”
Cargo planes that fly only a few meters up. Useful if you want to fight a winter land war in Asia, or cross large inland seas. "An “ekranoplan” literally “screen plane” is a vehicle resembling an aircraft, but operating solely on the principle of ground effect. Ground effect vehicles (GEV) fly above any flat surface, with the height above ground dependent upon the size of the vehicle."

John Clare - Wikipedia
"A more notable instance of this behavior was demonstrated in his interruption of a performance of The Merchant of Venice, in which Clare verbally assaulted Shylock." In one of his poems, he mentions an 'aeroplane.' I'd love a citation. (He died in 186x)
