Wireframing for responsive design // Boagworld
"There is no getting away from it, to show a complex website on a narrow screen device such as a mobile, there will have to be compromises."

Taste for Makers // Paul Graham
"Saying that taste is just personal preference is a good way to prevent disputes. The trouble is, it's not true. You feel this when you start to design things."

A Simpler Page // A List Apart
"The physical book is something designers get. It’s got a lot going for it, not the least of which is the fact that it’s physical. The boundaries are there, right before us. No guess work is necessary. And so there are a lot of great examples of well designed books. You needn’t look far to uncover a mountain of beautifully typeset and balanced pages. But what about digital books?"

My iPad Magazine Stand // Khoi Vinh
"My opinion about iPad-based magazines is that they run counter to how people use tablets today and, unless something changes, will remain at odds with the way people will use tablets as the medium matures. They’re bloated, user-unfriendly and map to a tired pattern of mass media brands trying vainly to establish beachheads on new platforms without really understanding the platforms at all. The fact of the matter is that the mode of reading that a magazine represents is a mode that people are decreasingly interested in, that is making less and less sense as we forge further into this century, and that makes almost no sense on a tablet."

Is This Really The Future of Magazines or Why Didn’t They Just Use HTML 5? // Interfacelab
"Is This The Future For Magazine Publishing? I hope not. I actually think it’s a huge step backwards and I think the wrong people are working on the problem – just like the wrong people were working on the web problem back in the day. Sure, we corrected course and we’re seeing the web done correctly more and more these days – but can the magazine publishing industry afford to get this wrong for any amount of time? Once could argue that the internet is quickly making their industry irrelevant. By the time an article is published in Time, I’ve read six or seven different takes on the same story on the web well before it hits the newsstands. I don’t think that’s a unique or new insight. But now you want me to download 500MB a month just so some print designer can have pixel perfect layouts with custom fonts?"

YouTube Redesign: vollends assimiliert // Digitaler Film
"Vorbei die Zeiten, in denen YouTube bunte, unaufgeräumte Video-Seiten hatte oder der User auf Hauptnavigation und Kategorien hingewiesen wurde. Das neue Design stellt ganz klar die Suche in den Vordergrund. Zudem wird die Playlist zum Standard, das heißt es spielt in Zukunft fast immer das nächste Video, wenn das momentane zu Ende geht."

YouTube - Feather Beta
"This is an opt-in beta for "Feather" support on YouTube. The "Feather" project is intended to serve YouTube video watch pages with the lowest latency possible. It achieves this by severely limiting the features available to the viewer and making use of advanced web techniques for reducing the total amount of bytes downloaded by the browser. It is a work in progress and may not work for all videos."

Multimedia reviews from fresh eyes // Innovative Interactivity
"UNC professors Laura Ruel and Don Wittekind notified me about a new assignment they gave their “Intro to Multimedia” students this year, which I have thoroughly enjoyed checking out. Each student is required to find a multimedia project to critique, and their write-ups are being posted on the class Website. The reviews are honest and insightful, and surely a big help to producers who are curious to learn how an average user views their projects. Don noted that these reviews are especially interesting because their students are just beginning their multimedia education, and therefore view presentations the way an average user would rather than a skilled and biased producer. One student reviewed British journalist and blogger Adam Westbrook’s recent project, “One Week in Iraq.” His response proves that these critiques are incredibly helpful for us: “I didn’t even think of navigation when I made that, it was more about the videos, which they didn’t watch by the looks of things!”

Whitespace // A List Apart
"Designers use whitespace to create a feeling of sophistication and elegance for upscale brands. Coupled with a sensitive use of typography and photography, generous whitespace is seen all over luxury markets. Cosmetics, for example, use extensive whitespace in their marketing material to tell the reader that they are sophisticated, high quality, and generally expensive."

Is Fast Flip Really the Best Google Can Do to Save the News? // ReadWriteWeb
"Overall, Fast Flip just seems like a disappointing product. The cooperation with content producers is interesting, though we wonder if a single AdSense unit on the site will really make newspapers any money. Google Reader or personalized applications like my6sense on the iPhone or feedly on the desktop just seem far more interesting and usable than browsing through a series of screenshots."

Weil "Optimiert für 800x600" einfach nicht ausreicht... // Dr. Web Magazin
"Die Erstellung einer Webseite oder eines Templates schließt den Test für verschiedene Browser und Monitorauflösungen ein. (...) Um wenigstens die Auswirkungen der geläufigsten Monitorauflösungen auf das Layout zu testen, existiert eine Reihe von Möglichkeiten. Im Folgenden eine Übersicht, unterteilt nach Größenänderung des Browserfensters und Umschalten der Monitorauflösung."
