Every year, the youngest Holmes, Merlin, invites his two older brothers to his holiday party. Every year, neither Sherlock nor Mycroft show up. This year, John finds Sherlock’s invite and needles Sherlock into going to see his (until then unknown) baby brother.

Druids start to slowly come out of hiding, living their lives peacefully in the kingdom and even sending a diplomat or two to Camelot. After a close call or two, Merlin has to have a chat with them about not revealing Merlin's identity. While no one ever does reveal Merlin is Emrys, a lot of people start to talk about Emrys in Camelot.

”Who is this?”

”This is Merlin Emrys. The one who dated your son for four years, and I just called you to inform that your son is an arse and I can’t believe I put up with him all that time. Is it only him or is it some Pendragon thing I wasn’t aware of?”

Merlin accidentally makes everybody in Camelot fall in love with him. Everybody except Arthur, that is.

When a visiting prince sets his sights on Merlin, Arthur is not amused. A story of love, loyalty, and secrets too-long kept.

It's dark inside the tent, and over the hiss of the water against canvas he can hear their horses stamp and snort outside. He imagines the spray of water from their snouts and smiles to himself, stretching out long and thin on his bedroll. He feels...tall and light and strangely comfortable in his own skin. Arthur imagines there are people less fit to serve, but he’s never met any. How in his tenth year of rule King Arthur chose a man to take the role of Court's Magician, and how Arthur made his decision.

Considering Arthur's future wife will be chosen less for compatibility than for her political value, Merlin may be the only marriage he'll have that won't end in bloodshed or a great deal of fortifying wine.

You're a wonderful businessman Arthur, but a full life needs love and companionship, not just a string of affairs. Settle down young Arthur, and your life will be the richer for it."

Arthur is the Royal Arbiter for Suitable Suitors' Disputes. He (and his trusty companion, the golden-dragon-tasselled hat) alone can determine who is fit to woo royal servants and other assorted courtiers in Uther's court.

(In light of the sentence above, the following may not appear to be a truthful statement, but: not as cracky as that makes it sound. Really.)

Camelot seemed so distant from Ealdor, sometimes. Such a different world. The castle was vast, and complex, and corrupt in a thousand ways; Ealdor could never be anything like it, because it was small, and simple, and everyone knew everything, almost.

When Merlin was little, his mum used to tell him the story of the kitten who would sit on the hearth, staring up at the chimney. One day, the little cat — it was a boy cat, and sometimes he was called Merlin — uncurled himself from his comfortable, safe warm spot on the hearth, and climbed up into the chimney to see what was up there.
