Sherlock Holmes was very nearly the only reason telegrams ever came to the house.

The first time Sherlock made off with her clothes, it was a skirt, a crinoline and a bustle, and Mary arrived home from visiting her mother just in time to nearly run into him coming out of her own house.

When she gets thirty seconds to check her phone, it's fucking Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner and Austin hears "Reid" and "hospitalized" and "critical" and her heart starts going in the wrong direction.

This has its most dramatic effect in terms of Mary Morstan and her backstory, or complete and utter lack thereof. The movie has very obviously thrown out book!canon: Watson meets her separately from Holmes, both her parents are alive (Watson talks about having tea with them), etc. As such, she's even more "just what's on the screen" than the other two. But the same will apply to Watson and to Holmes.
