The worst Saturday of Jeff's life started when a lot of howling and screeching woke him up at some ungodly hour of the morning.

Boots pointed one finger straight up. His mom followed his gesture. “Sweetie, why is Bruno sitting in the tree with a pair of binoculars? I’m not going to be getting complaints from the neighbors, am I?”

The thing about Mike, Rudy thought in fractured moments, was that he really couldn't hide how he felt. If you weren't clueless, you could read every thought that crossed his mind, figure out the way he felt about you from the way he stood and the way he moved and the kind of smile he gave you.

There was something up with Miller and Webster.

When Cathy asks for a favour, the boys of Macdonald Hall know better than to refuse. However, Bruno seems to have an agenda of his own. It all would have gone according to plan, if it hadn't been for the flesh-eating plants.

Rudy Miller didn't play truth or dare.

Bruno Walton was twelve years old when he first met Boots O’Neal in Room 306, Dormitory 3 of Macdonald Hall. By the end of their first week as roommates, and to the despair of the school administration, they were inseparable, and at the end of their first month together Bruno offered Boots the privileged position of co-dictator in his scheme for world domination.

It took Bruno several years to realize that had essentially been his twelve-year-old self’s version of a marriage proposal.

Mike wants Rudy, but he doesn't think that Rudy's interested. So he decides to go ahead and date other people. Uh, Rudy's not on board with that plan.

Imagine all of the various characters from all GK's books converging in one place, with all the universe-imploding potential crossovers between the books (what happens when Bruno Walton and Rudy Miller meet?), crossovers from outside the GK world (Wouldn't a science fair held at Princeton inevitably end with Bruno and Boots contingent having to take Sidney to meet Dr. House? Isn't it about time Stargate Command came to recruit Elmer? Who could Bugs meet if he was dragging Adam out to see bands from a Science Fair held in Chicago?) and other antics that could ensue with WEIRD SCIENCE thrown into the mix.

The reporter asks each of them the usual questions about winning and living the dream and all that, and when she gets to Rudy she says, "Rudy Miller, Canada's star of the day. Tell me, coming into this race, you must've known you didn't have much chance of beating Michael Phelps. How did you do it?"

Rudy looks at her impassively. "I was faster than him," he says.

This one was sort of Bruno's fault, but afterwards even Boots was willing to admit that Bruno hadn't done anything wrong and the real blame lay with Bruno's older brother Calvin who should have just kept his mouth shut especially in front of Bruno's mother (who, everyone knew, couldn't keep a secret even if the fate of the free world was depending on it).

Bruno being who he was, it wasn't long before the Hauntings For Hallowe'en committee--made up of all the usual suspects--had its first meeting.

"I suppose I should be grateful you didn't form a committee," said Boots, then paused when he saw the look on Bruno's face. "Wait, you formed a committee?!?"

Someone at MacDonald Hall is having sex!

Bruno and Boots go to college. They adopt new causes. They make new friends. Some things don't change.

Chris notices first. He always notices first, his artist's eye caught by the way people move, pose, gesture. He never told anyone about Wilbur's crush on Diane, so obvious in the gentleness of his big hands when he boosted her up the drainpipe, the slump of his shoulders when her smile flashed in his direction before she turned back to nagging Cathy and Bruno.

Boots comes back from summer vacation with a problem. Bruno's going to fix it. Even if it kills him. And Cathy. And everyone else in the universe.

Boots really should have drowned Edward in the bathtub when he'd had the chance back when he was in the fifth grade and Edward was not very large or very fast.
