An attempt on Michael's life changes everything.... for both him and Kitt. The beginning of the Fire and Ice Series.

The soft suds rolled down the grimy surface like tears, creating muddy rivulets against the shiny, black finish. Michael squeezed the sponge in one hand and watched as the watery trails worked their way down Kitt’s side, and collected in puddles on the floor. His partner and best friend sat silently inside the car, holed up in his CPU, refusing to talk. Michael had tried everything he could think of to get his partner to tell him why he was so upset, but Kitt had resisted any attempts at conversation.

Really, when you get right down to it, isn't everybody a little more than meets the eye?

"Technically, the project is code-named the Weir Industries 2000, but unfortunately it shortens to WITT and that just sounds silly."

As part of the "Fire & Ice" alternate universe, Michael and Kitt are already linked by a soul-bond, but "Chasing Midnight" deepens that bond to every level. Once again attacked, Kitt is forced to jump across the link into Michael's mind to survive the damage to his CPU. Only a human brain was not designed to house an AI mind, so elfin introduces the ingenious solution of a temporary android body until Kitt's CPU is fixed.

Kitt sounded--well, kind of sloshed, actually. It would have been funny if he didn't know that the only time the TransAm's enunciation slipped was when he was if-he-was-human-he'd-be-in-the-hospital-ICU damaged.

It made no difference to the computer that his partner’s memory was now corrupted, perhaps irretrievably – A short scene from the second season episode 'Knightmares': Kitt’s dominant program did not make allowances for the fallibility of human nature, and he would stay at Michael’s side whether he wanted him there or not.

"KITT, tell me I'm not crazy for feeling like this."

"You might be surprised to hear this, but you have charms of your own that she can't even come close to."

"This is why you brought me here to talk about this," Michael said, glaring at Devon. "And why we couldn't meet you in the semi. You needed to get me far enough away from KITT that he can't hear us?" He gestured across the expanse of mowed lawn to the large stone mansion.

“Michael, if you don’t calm down you’re going to do something rash,” KITT said, his voice aggravatingly calm. Ignoring him, Michael continued to pace along the side of the road following the white line ten steps forward then ten steps back, fists clenched at his sides.

“I dare ya.”

“Michael, this is ridiculous.”

“You are just trying to get out of a challenge.”

“Michael, really.”

“Kitt, c’mon, I dare ya.”

He was snoring again.
Kitt flicked his scanner over his partner with a great deal of amusement. Sprawled on his hood, supposedly stargazing, in reality sleeping the sleep of the exhausted.

"M...Michael?" Kitt asked in a bewildered voice, "What are you doing here? I...I thought they fired you?"
"They did, Kitt." Michael replied as he tooled the engine and began to back up the car, preparing for their escape.

"Michael," Kitt said then, and this time Michael couldn't quite place the tone of his partner's voice. "Are you stealing me?"

His father had left him a legacy of villainy and the means and method by which to apply it. He had spent his life learning, modernising, building a network of contacts and associates, and he'd been close, so close to his goal at one point that the bitter tang of finality had been on his tongue, the blood of his enemy had almost been on his lips…. The network had failed him. The Knight and his steed had vanished, literally, dropped off the face of the Earth.

"You would have thought they'd learnt their lesson, wouldn't you? I mean, seriously, the first one malfunctioned, the second one didn't activate…."
"But it did, didn't it?" Michael steered the highly modified Trans Am around the Stealth and backed it up out of sight. "And they know that - Devon knows it. And this guy, Graiman, you can bet he knows it too." In the passenger seat, Kitt was tapping his titanium-boned, synthetic-skinned foot against the floor of the footwell.
